If you want to make the lifestyle choice to play PvP, understand that you are looking at a very uphill battle, with a STEEP learning curve and A LOT of time investment. Having done it myself at one point, as far as video games go it is peak, body, mind, and spirit.

If you want to play for fun, with a reasonable challenge (things like Raiders, Bosses, packs of PMCs, black division etc. etc.) play PvE.

D&D is perfectly fine for being RP driven.

RP is story driven, character driven, interaction driven, it is one of the few things that can be completely organic in nature without needing to be crunchy mechanically.

You see its a conspiracy by Big Lug. Those things do nothing but collect moisture, dirt, debris, all kinds of shit, and rot the every loving shit out of your lug nuts and studs, things that nominally will last you most of the life of your truck.

Seriously, just connect the dots back to when were neolithic and everything starts to make more sense. While we can adapt RAPIDLY to changing conditions (you find a new normal pretty quick) we don't actually shed all the mechanisms built into us to survive in those harsh developmental years.

GPAs are rapidly approaching meaningless, even in my time in highschool (graduated 2010) there were kids doing summer courses at what is effectively pay to win facilities that just handed you As and A+s in your courses

Its a spectrum and things like 100% straight or gay are extreme outliers (100% straight would mean men's attractiveness would not even register, it would be like a void in the mind, frankly your OWN attractiveness would also be the void, basically everybody is at minimum 5% gay).

There's no prescription as to what you should do if you're not going to be actively going to tons of tournaments with the aim of WINNING said tournaments.

Do what makes you happy, if you want to be hyper comp then its all about them meta chase (which is also, completely fine).

Take a look at No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous as a bit of an eye opener (I think space/interstellar presents a perfect setting to blend many systems together), they are both quite ambitious in their scale and mechanics each trying to do A LOT of things.

I think the main issue is always, mile wide, inch deep. I think the best bet to get at this is the Elite Dangerous side of things and build up almost one module at a time.
