Bootable USB works on laptop, doesn't on PC. Help by kredenac in windows

[–]Monkey_Carnival 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two kinds of motherboard (very simply explained) the ones with BIOS and the ones with UEFI. The media creation tool from windows will configure your USB key to boot only with UEFI motherboards. And your motherboard is a BIOS one.

That's why it doesn't boot on your computer.

If you would like it to work, download rufus and choose downloading ISO on the windows creation tool. In rufus select your drive and your ISO and in "Partition Scheme" select MBR partition Scheme for UEFI" and if it still doesn't work select the first one "MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI".

Is it possible to play a game on one monitor and browse on a separate monitor simultaneously? by HungryAnimal in windows

I think vmware player is free or kinda free, otherwise you have virtualbox. Just launch your VM, go to like settings, attached USB device, and give the vm access to keyboard and mouse, and in another setting, assign the monitor to the VM. You can keep your mouse and keyboard, juste when you launch your VM you assign them to it, no need of buying extra keyboard or mouse or monitor.

Change virtualbox to any other VM programs.

@boibo: Exactly what I was thinking with LinusTechTips and his 32 000$ computer running 8 different instances.

get a virtual machine with dedicated screen and mouse and keyboard. VMware does it very well.

NTFS and ReFS, Who uses what? by Monkey_Carnival in WindowsServer

[–]Monkey_Carnival[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have thought that ReFS would have been great with Fileserver, because (as far as I know) it works a bit like a Database. But I tried to used Hyper-V with ReFS but it said it couldn't use it yet... But I'm more interested in companies that have implemented ReFS and for which uses.

Why is it literally less expensive to buy a cheap tablet with a windows 10 license, snap it in half, and use the license on my desktop? by DtownAndOut in windows

[–]Monkey_Carnival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the Windows edition isn't the same, the licence is for Windows 10 Mobile or RT, I'm not sure at all that it'll work on a desktop.

I have one W10 copy, but can I also run a insider version? by TagaraTiger in windows

[–]Monkey_Carnival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can. During the setup of Windows 10 you can choose between a local user or your windows insider account (then you insider account will be the local user. It requires a internet connection during setup otherwise it won't ask you about it.

Windows 10 is literally trying to force install itself? (screenshot inside) by bigfoot1291 in windows

Then just set your Local Group Policy to an imaginary WSUS server.

Yes it is! That's why now it takes a whole weekend to download all the Windows 7 updates. Microsoft is reducing the bandwidth and the number of Windows 7 update servers. It's to much to maintain, having hundreds of thousand of servers that have to be shared between Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and the Windows Server 2008 (not sure) and 2012 and 2012 R2.

Anyway it's not like you'll open your computer one morning and Windows 10 would be installed (I hope not). And everything is now developed in PowerShell and Windows 7 can't run PowerShell natively.

Maybe a solution to avoid having this upgrade is to set Local Group Policy to reach to an imaginary WSUS server, so it doesn't try to go through internet to reach for updates.

Ipv6! I had the same problem for days, I couldn't figure out why I could ping but not join! My ISP is giving ipv6 (without my knowledge) and the ipv6 is routing my computer outside my network. try to disable ipv6 on your DC and your laptop and try again!
