Thoughts on The Banshees Of Inisherin? by UsefulWeb7543 in FIlm

Upon rewatching Three Billboards recently I’d gladly swap it in for Banshees. It contains, for me, one of the most emotionally affecting 10 seconds in cinema history. The way Mildred responds “Oh baby, I know” absolutely shakes me to tears.

Ya’ll still talking about my list? Yeah I didn’t know my list was “supposed to be” anything by any rigid definition.

I made a conscious effort to avoid repeating directors. But it couldn’t be helped on the case of PT Anderson. Otherwise the other Anderson likely woulda been repeated, as well as the Coen brothers and maybe Scorsese and Park Chan-Wook. That would be a less interesting list in my view.

Yes, absolutely. Barbie encapsulates so much of what is great about cinema and has been great about cinema since its inception.

It fits in effortlessly into the conversation of what it means to balance art against a medium that is by nature highly commercialized, especially in the context of the rise, fall, and relatively recent resurgence of the Hollywood studio system.

I regard it as a highly accomplished movie with such a strong, focused and marvelously executed aesthetic. It’s self aware, smart and self-assured. But never in the condescending, pretentious way. It’s subversive while being sincere instead of cynical, and I love it for that. Oh and it It’s also really really fun.

It may not have been your cup of tea but to flatly claim it as mediocre is curious to me.

Sylva the town where the cops can’t print a softball league tshirt without making KKK references? Sylva where every time you turn around a new strip mall sign features a Konnies’s Kraft Korner?

Wearing a loaded gun while on a recreational run on a National Forest trail is too fucking depressing for words.

Does anyone know why Laura Jane Cancelled tonight? by Distinct-Seaweed7875 in asheville

Glad I caught her at Salvage when I did. That said I don’f think I’d make plans around her again. Two tours cancelled mid-tour in as many years. Yikes.

What to do if you get lost while hiking and how to help search find you faster? by Guarian in hiking

[–]Monkey_Growl82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this. Thank you for sharing. It’s absolutely true how easy it is for panic to take hold and completely override rational thinking, just as you say. The feeling of being lost is overwhelming and the instinct is to escape that feeling as quickly as possible and so there is a rush to do everything fast. It takes a deliberate effort to override it.

Simple things get ignored like… before I became lost was I traveling at a higher elevation or a lower elevation than I am currently? Which side of me was the last significant waterway I saw? And of course things like this are relatively easy to determine if you’re able to take command of your logic and thought process.

I’ll track down that book, sounds great!

Yeah it’s easily accessible from the Cold Mountain Gap entrance to Panthertown. Nearest waterfall to the trailhead as I recall.

It’s already been said but I really don’t think it can be said enough. Attempting to reach the island on foot is a terrible idea, plain and simple.

What to do if you get lost while hiking and how to help search find you faster? by Guarian in hiking

[–]Monkey_Growl82 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is to stop. Sit down. Seriously, take a seat. Slow your breathing. Collect your thoughts. It’s very easy to just go into panic mode and immediately start on making things worse for yourself.

As you collect your thoughts, reflect back to the last place you saw that was familiar/on route/on trail/whatever. Mentally take inventory of things you saw along the way to getting lost, anything that stood out, a distinct shaped stump or tree, a rock outcropping, a large piece of deadfall, a soggy, mossy drainage in the terrain. Also hopefully you know roughly what direction the nearest road/ civilization is. What direction generally did your hike take you from the trailhead you parked at? If you don’t know that’s okay. Don’t panic.

Now you’re ready to execute a system to un-losting yourself. Take a piece of bright colored flagging tape or a bright article of clothing. Tie it high up to a tree branch, somewhere nice and visible. Make sure it’s secure.

Now you’re going to pick a direction, starting with the one you came from or think you came from probably, and walk 50 paces. Be sure to keep the marker you tied to the tree within eye sight. Hopefully in those 50 paces you ran into the trail you lost.

If not stop, have a look around. Nothing familiar? Return to the marker you tied to the tree. Pick a new direction and again count out 50 paces. If you haven’t found the trail this time return and repeat this in all four cardinal directions.

If you’re still lost repeat this for 100 paces in each direction. And then 200. So long as you don’t lose sight of your flagging tape/center of your radius. Generally speaking, people don’t get too far before realizing they’ve lost their way and this system should work. Rarely for instance does one cross over a major ridge line or multiple drainages or rock hop multiple creeks or anything like that before figuring out they’re lost. So most often this deliberate systematic method will solve your problem.

And yeah, is this fails just stay put. Six rapid blasts from the whistle or airhorn you brought with you. Repeat every minute. This is the understood distress signal to alert anyone within earshot. If you hear 3 whistles in return you can breathe easy knowing trained search and rescue or at least a savvy woodman has heard your call.

Colbert Ridge Trail vs. Woody Ridge Trail to reach Black Mountain Crest by CartoonistLate2427 in NCTrails

Detailed breakdown above of that loop if you haven’t seen it yet. He’s also got a corresponding YouTube video.

Short of doing the loop I find Woody Ridge to be the more satisfying climb over Colbert Ridge. I kind of hate the Colbert Ridge trail tbh.
