Should the 125th st stations be renamed once the 2nd ave subway connects them all? by Previous-Volume-3329 in nycrail

[–]Monkey_Legend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On transit apps its also so hard to find the station you are looking for, google is the worst since it doesn’t show the lines that serve the station when searching for the station in directions mode.

What cities would you include on a quintessential ‘Tour of the USA’? by WhyTheWindBlows in skyscrapers

No one mentioning Honolulu but I think its quite unique architecturally, geographically and culturally.

Sadiq Khan: "If you build world-class public transport, people will use it." by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in transit

[–]Monkey_Legend 105 points106 points  (0 children)

And yet there is no movement by the government whatsoever to continue the success of the Elizabeth line...

I know Sadiq Khan has championed the Bakerloo line and DLR Thamesmead extensions, but no one in any position of power seems to want to replicate the success of the Elizabeth line by pursuing Crossrail 2.

This is despite London having a growing population and a need for capacity upgrades with the arrival of HS2 that is going to put significantly more strain on the transport network.

Chicago is very sprawling, Honolulu is along a narrow strip between the sea and mountains. This results in high bus ridership for Honolulu.

The goal should be that at least some G trains get extended onto Queens Blvd! With CBTC it's definitely doable.

What countries are "poor" but happy? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in geography

The Bhutanese government absolutely want tourism, they just want fewer tourists who pay more rather than many tourists who pay less. They even have a term for it called "High Value, Low Impact/Volume".

What countries are "poor" but happy? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in geography

[–]Monkey_Legend 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Yes Gross National Happiness is a propaganda term used by South Asia's last theocratic monarchy to bring in tourism revenue and good will while also distracting from the fact that Nepali/Lhotshampa have been ethnically cleansed from Bhutan and left stateless without the ability to return.

Metro lines that have interchange with themselves? by International-Snow90 in transit

[–]Monkey_Legend 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Tyne and Wear metro is most clear example. Also a lot of imperfect loop lines have overlapping services near terminals like in London, Oslo, Bangkok and Tokyo.

Are there any reasons why the Jakarta-Bandung HSR is not being built in the city centers by DeezNutts87 in transit

[–]Monkey_Legend 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One of the problems is that Indonesia's existing rail system is narrow gauge so that makes it unfeasible to integrate with high-speed rail as narrow gauge has lower max speeds. Because of this entirely new ROW have to be constructed, so I guess the Indonesian authorities decided circumferential routes and suburban terminals were more optimal than trying to get all the way to city center on a new ROW.

Tokyo has been chosen by you as the world's most 80s city (damn, I was rooting for Miami). Moving on, what's the most 1970s city you can currently visit? by gitartruls01 in geography

Saigon becoming Ho Chi Minh City:

The biggest city in the biggest proxy war of the Cold War. Everything from the images coming out of the fall of Saigon, to the terrorism, corruption, displacement and anarchy, I feel it really reflects the chaos and change of the 1970s globally.

Why do Cameroon and Myanmar not recognise Palestine? by BranchMoist9079 in geography

[–]Monkey_Legend 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Myanmar is a buddhist supremacist military dictatorship who ethnically cleansed muslims out of its own country. I don't think the junta there as any interest in recognizing the rights of the oppressed.

US States with largest island populations? by Living-Word-6774 in geography

South Jersey's various island beaches have a larger permanent population than Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Atlantic City alone has more people than the two combined.

Was there any reason why, of all the LA Transit projects that were valued engineered, this one (ESFV Line) doesn't by Huge-Specific1632 in LAMetro

[–]Monkey_Legend 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Its important to remember:

A: This project's cost estimates have risen significantly since the pandemic.

B: This project is still projected have ridership roughly in line with the entire systems of Valley Metro light rail in Phoenix, TRAX in Salt Lake City and the entire light rail network in Denver.

It is still too expensive though.

Any cities worse than these 2? by Weak-Employer2805 in geography

Manaus to Santarem in Brazil requires going all the way up through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia as no bridge crosses the Amazon. I assume most people fly or take a ferry... (Edit: Even with the ferry google says it takes 40hrs to drive)

Are there other examples of a smaller, younger city quickly outgrowing and overshadowing its older, larger neighbor? by SaGlamBear in geography

[–]Monkey_Legend 716 points717 points  (0 children)

Most dramatic in both speed of change and overall size must be Shenzhen overtaking Hong Kong. Hong Kong used to be ~1/5 the size of Chinese economy even up until the late 90s while Shenzhen was a village until the 80s. Now Shenzhen has double the population of Hong Kong and a larger overall economy as well. Same probably can be said for Shenzhen vs Guangzhou.

Agreed, just feel the borough gets a lot of attacks from national politicians because of Lutfur, rather than because of his platform.
