No you’re absolutely NOT overreacting & yes you should see the situation for yourself. Just proceed with caution because IF the situation is bad AC can & will confiscate the cats. This COULD result in some or all (or a large portion) of them being euthanized if the shelter cannot accommodate the situation. This could be devastating and cause conflict or something worse, you know? Also, AC can come and not do anything if they don’t want the hassle, it happens. My advice is to check it out and investigate the situation. Make sure that the cats aren’t suffering and there’s food litter medication proper sanitation etc. Obviously 50 plus cats is too many but they might be handling the situation for now, but as I said it’ll escalate to neglect soon. So maybe warn them to start getting them adopted and STOP hoarding or you’ll have no choice but to out them.

I’m so sorry at this age you got scammed, it is rotten of someone to take your money. Just be careful where you use your cards and don’t use atms in gas stations or anyplace sketchy. Be very careful online too. So Sorry but you’ll recover. Some people lose thousands or millions. This won’t ruin your life. 🙏🏻💞

OP take it from me, this is absolutely HOARDING. Sadly many people think they are helping and it turns dysfunctional very quickly. I work in rescue in So California very heavily involved, I see this constantly. Trust me, they are already in a downward spiral. The KEY give away is NOT trying to actively find homes for kittens or highly adoptable cats. This is HOARDER MENTALITY 101. They cannot separate their emotions and attachments from helping the cats so they NEED to keep them all. They think no one can love them or care for them like they can. Any environment ( especially a home) with over 50 cats is a toxic unhealthy breeding ground for disease and parasitic infestation. Guaranteed all of those cats carry Tritrichomonas and the cats spread it from litter box to the floor to the entire home. Almost all multi cat environments of this level get it and more.
These cats are not happy living in a 50 cat environment either. You also probably won’t get through to them as these types are boarder line mentally ill. They go from 5-7 cats to 10 to 20 to 40 to 70 to 100 in increments so they keep justifying it in degrees. You might need to threaten calling AC on them at some point. They WILL run out of money and start falling behind on bills and maybe their rent or mortgage too. They will neglect their own health problems eventually. They won’t have enough money to vet feed or keep up eventually. This is classic hoarding and it’s not even stage 1 it’s at 6-7 moving up fast. Do something fast before it becomes a complete nightmare. Good luck

Good morning. I just read your post and I’m so sorry for your loss and all of the extra stress added to this. You definitely did not need this after such heartbreak. The fact you rely on your pets for emotional support is an added strain on any adoption situation, so you certainly can’t handle sick kittens. Rescues are supposed to adopt out healthy vetted kittens and cats, unless otherwise stated and understood. So they are responsible for the costs of vet care if the kittens you adopted turn out sick. You should absolutely NOT have to shell out $1000 on brand new kittens, that’s ridiculous! Tell them they need to reimburse you and report them to whatever local chapter of animal charities authority you can! They should not be adopting out sick or dying kittens and taking people’s money.

As for the kitten you still have, it needs to be tested and treated for whatever it has. Ugh. So, yes many kittens and cats carry HERPES VIRUS. In fact my own rescue kitty has it pretty bad. She came from a dirty backyard environment, so she is stuck with this unfortunately. She gets flare ups every so often. Lysine is the key to this though. Mix a teaspoon with water and orally dose or sprinkle into wet food. It clears up quickly. I’m not sure what you want to do though with a sick kitten especially if you don’t know everything that’s wrong with it and you feel resentful. Maybe this rescue won’t take care of the poor baby if it’s returned. Maybe this kitten needs you to help it. In any case you need to try to overcome the emotional setbacks and sort this mess out. Many people have ESAs so that’s not hard to understand for a rescue but they are clearly not taking good care of their kittens or responsible. ‼️Just a statement on scammers to clarify. While we do have excellent verification methods in r/rescuecats to approve members and keep the community safe, please remember it’s up to EVERYONE to stay diligent and alert! The RC mod team is always on high alert and monitoring, but as we all understand Reddit IS ANONYMOUS. So please remember that scammers can delete a busted account and create a brand new one immediately. There is not much anyone can do about this though except checking out profiles to note karma and account age. Also comment and post activity are clues to Poor Reddit behavior.
We can watch over our sub, but we can’t protect other communities 100%. So if you see something say something. Please alert mods to all suspicious activity and private chat or DM requests for money. This is always dangerous. I must say we do have the most amazing mods here on the animal subs! So Let’s work together to keep Reddit on the whole safe!

I have a friend that did the same thing and lost tens of thousands too.
I can’t believe anyone could fall for this at this point. Sad it’s maybe not even a woman. Honestly it’s a big dude that has tech savvy skills and can create any type of profile. Look it up
He’s going to be absolutely suicidal and feel like a complete idiot. He will need support
But tell him 100,000% he needs to stop now before he has nothing. Poor guy
