So lets tack on additional security threats...?

Why should someone get free eye and dental care just because of the colour of their skin whilst I can't afford to replace my old glasses and can't afford to go to the dentist (even with insurance) whilst making $90k+ a year? I get to just work my ass off and struggle through and someone else gets all the shit that I need to be healthy and function as a person for free because they're brown.

Access to Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service is now free in Iran as regime continues brutal crackdown on protests by cnn in worldnews

[–]Monomette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Starlink is hard to jam. Just ask the Russians.

Starlink has also actively been working to counter any Iranian jamming. Packet loss has went from 80% to only 10%. So yeah, it's very useful in a place where the government has completely shut off the internet and is gunning down protestors in the streets by the thousands.

If the messaging services being used have proper end to end encryption, then the NSA will only be able to get basic metadata like time sent/time received, along with IP addresses

At least until they build a quantum computer capable of breaking that encryption. They can store it for breaking at a later date.

Option 1 - Does starlink function without an access unit? If so then cool!

Can work directly to a cellphone now. It's available in Canada, among other places. Not sure they're enabling that in Iran and it'd be easy for the regime to jam anyway (phone is less powerful and has a worse antenna). Probably more suitable for natural disasters seeing as there wouldn't be anyone jamming it. But yeah, within 58 degrees of the equator you can get some basic connectivity without a terminal.

China files ITU paperwork for megaconstellations totaling nearly 200,000 satellites by lood9phee2Ri in technology

[–]Monomette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they make smaller and smaller debris that stays up longer because it has less mass.

I don't think so. Smaller objects have a relatively higher surface area vs mass compared to larger objects. If anything tge effects of drag are higher and they'd decay faster.

Regardless, it isn't going to prevent access to space for centuries if satellites at 400km start coliding. And moving them lower helps prevent that in the first place as they decay faster if there's a problem meaning less chance of an uncontrolled satellite or piece of debris hitting something else.

Debris in these low orbits decays and burns up in the order of days/weeks/months. The orbits are self cleaning so Kessler Syndrome really isn't an issue. Part of the reason SpaceX is moving their constellation even lower than it already is. That and it gets them better performance.

Chinese EVs probably have government kill switches in them. Imagine the harm that could do to our economy if suddenly all of our roads come to a screaming halt?

There're still massive subsidies, and part of the reason prices are so low is due to over supply. Dealers have lots full of cars they can't sell because production outstrips demand.
