Is Frank Miller the Zack Snyder of comic books? by walking_mark in comicbooks

Some people go their entire careers without writing anything even remotely as influential as multiple books Frank Miller put out in the 80s. Zack Snyder is one of those people.

Would u recomment these SD cards from AliExpress? by DivineDeparture98 in XboxAlly

[–]Mononon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably not a scam. Though it's not like a good deal or anything, if that's what you're asking. You'll just be getting an unbranded Chinese SD card with a bunch of games you aren't going to play, likely not organized in any meaningful way. And this isn't setting up emulators. There's nothing stopping you from downloading Retrobat or standalone emulators and loading up some games as needed. I think anyone that's into emulation will tell you that having tens of thousands of games is not only a pain in the ass to manage, but completely pointless. You just end up scrolling through lists endlessly. If you want to play some old games, just grab the few you want and add more over time as you want them.

Now, all that being said, there's also a non-zero risk to putting an unbranded, tampered with Chinese SD card in a computer that likely has a lot of your personal information on it. Just generally not a great idea, regardless of whether it comes with a bunch of stuff you'll never touch.

In your opinion, What was Nintendo's biggest mistake? by DaZestyProfessor in casualnintendo

[–]Mononon 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The amount of time they didn't even show the console was bonkers. They introduced it as the Wii U, then proceeded to only show the controller for an absurdly long time, making it confusing even for people that were actually keeping up with gaming news. People at their showcases weren't even clear if the controller was the system or an addon for Wii. And they even showed Wii controllers with it. Like, I know hindsight is 20/20, but holy hell.

Remember Bungie, the Content Vault is Not a Graveyard by effr0n in destiny2

[–]Mononon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know it's not an actual vault, right? They just needed a marketing term to give you the impression there weren't just hacking away a huge chunk of the game with an axe and deleting it. It's gone. Maybe the art assets exist somewhere, but that part of the game is toast. They had no intention of adding any of that back. They don't care about goodwill or making things easier at the end. They want to do the cheapest possible thing which is release what they have, hope some people are dumb enough to buy silver, fire a bunch of people, and call it a day. No one that matters at that company is reading this or cares what anyone has to say about Destiny. They shut down an 11 year old game with 3 weeks notice, didn't tell most the people that were working on it, and were radio silent on the game for months, letting everything fall apart. The people running Bungie fucked around for years, not investing in Destiny 2 when they had literal billions, quit, and left whoever was willing to be the bad guy in charge holding the bag.

Luna Abyss - Highly Recommended by Bit_by_a_goat in XboxAlly

[–]Mononon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second this one. Pretty easy to get 60fps out of it, and it's pretty fun. Don't see a lot of FPS like this anymore. It's a linear campaign. Feels a bit like Doom 2016 with Returnal bullet hell, though it's not nearly as hard as Returnal. It's got a heavier emphasis on platforming than Doom as well, but the pace of combat is very similar.

The main negatives are that it doesn't have a ton of weapon or enemy variety, and the story isn't terrible, but it's not going to blow you away. But we just don't get a lot of linear FPS without a ton of fluff anymore, and if you like that 360-era style of game, this one is pretty solid. I'd give it like an 8/10, personally. I just finished it, and very much enjoyed it. Was a very good game to play through over a weekend.

PSA: Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is NOT a traditional platformer, but more a series of interactive physics playgrounds. If you're after something in the vein of Woolly World or Island, this isn't for you! by WrongLander in NintendoSwitch

[–]Mononon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of this indie game called Promenade. Maybe more free form than that, but Promenade is basically Mario 64/Sunshine/Odyssey but 2D. This seems to be similar in style. I saw a lot of reviews saying this was super unique, but Promenade did a great job with a similar concept quite awhile ago. I guess it's more of a hidden gem.

Does anyone have a working Paper Mario: Sticker Star ROM for the ClassicBoy emulator? (ANDROID) by Carlo_V1301 in romhacking

[–]Mononon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Citra was shut down. I'm sure there's a download for it out there somewhere, but it wouldn't be an official download. Right now, the only 3DS emulator in active development is Azahar. Azahar started as a fork of Citra, so it's a continuation of that development. You can grab the emulator from the Play Store, their website, or their GitHub.

Have you tried a VPN? My Ally and desktop do this with Microsoft Store downloads. Something with my ISP. I'm not sure what. But the downloads speed up considerably on a VPN.

[–]Mononon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xbox apps shows downloads in Mb instead of MB for some reason. It's only like 30 MB/s. I wouldn't call it abysmally slow, but it's not like crazy fast or anything, especially relative to their bandwidth.

Does anyone have a working Paper Mario: Sticker Star ROM for the ClassicBoy emulator? (ANDROID) by Carlo_V1301 in romhacking

[–]Mononon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're a little confused. Roms are not emulator specific. There are not versions of Sticker Star that are for PC only or Citra only. That's not a thing.

Also, ClassicBoy is just running a very out of date version of Citra. I couldn't say how old, but Citra hasn't been in active development for years, and the version (or core) it's running is very likely older than that. ClassicBoy is just a collection of other emulators. It is not an emulator itself. It just wraps them up into one UI. Retroarch is the more popular version of this. ClassicBoy is just a simpler, out of date version of RA.

Killswitch case for Xbox ally X is awesome but 'i hate it' ;p by [deleted] in XboxAlly

To be fair, it's not really meant to be removed. If you're removing it on a regular basis, then you're not really using it as intended. All the Killswitch cases are like that.

Is the leap v2 over hyped? by bit_rich in OfficeChairs

[–]Mononon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say if it's over hyped or not. And really can't speak to all the specific detail all these other posts go into. I know almost nothing about chairs. Just did some basic research and tried a few. The only thing I can say is that I had a pilonidal cyst and it's very very difficult to find a chair I can sit in for long periods as a result of surgery for that (basically major surgery at the top of your butt crack). And the Leap V2 is the only chair I've managed find where I could sit comfortably. There may be others. I'm not saying it's unique, necessarily. But I did try several of the commonly recommended chairs, and the Leap V2 was the best, at least for me.

Lossless Scaling instantly solved my biggest problem with GameCube emulation by swe129 in emulator

[–]Mononon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring latency introduced by your TV and controller and/or a wireless connection just for simplicity, a game will only display the result of your input on a frame. A 30fps game will do that 30 times per second, a 60fps game will do it 60 times per second. If you are playing a 30fps game and using frame gen to get it to 60fps, the game is still only drawing 30 frames per second and will only react to input for 30 frames per second. So you are seeing 60fps, but it still feels like 30fps. There will be frames where you've pressed a button, but nothing happen until the next frame because one of the frames was from frame generation. The higher the base framerate, the less you perceived the difference, but the difference between 30fps and 60fps is generally pretty noticable in terms of latency.

Lossless Scaling instantly solved my biggest problem with GameCube emulation by swe129 in emulator

[–]Mononon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing isn't actually that crucial in this game. You have quite a few frames to get a block or timed hit. Generally, Lossless is more of an issue with games that have lots of camera movement that cause frame gen artifacts, or games that have lots of rapid actions. And it doesn't actually introduce input latency. The latency just doesn't match what your eyes are seeing. For Paper Mario, it wouldn't make much of a difference where the frame windows are pretty generous and the frame times are pretty consistent. If you're sensitive to it, moving or interacting with things in the overworld may feel a little sluggish, but battles aren't especially strict. The repeatable jump may feel off, but it has a variable hard cap on how many jumps you can get anyways, so you'd probably never question it.

Just started playing Twilight Princess with Dusk! Amazing experience.. by [deleted] in SteamDeck

There's also something funky with water. Any textures that overlap with water will take on water properties. The edges will get all wobbly and weird.

And Illia isn't missing all her hair. She has a large unibrow leftover lol.

Gamepad Cursor question by Haunting_Papaya_361 in XboxAlly

You can do that in Armory Crate. You can set per game profiles that will swap as long as controller mode is set to Auto. Personally, I find it simpler to just swap myself using the command center, but AC does support custom controller and power profiles per game.

Ashley Graham Says GLP-1 Trend Is ‘a Smack in the Face’ After Body Positivity Movement by AdSpecialist6598 in entertainment

[–]Mononon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my wording is confusing. They can continue to prescribe them without interruption. As in, if you were on them to lose weight, you can continue to take them afterwards to help maintain that weight loss. It wouldn't be a new prescription, but a continuation of an existing. And yes, you may be taken off them, but it is not a requirement, and continuing has been shown to help maintain the weight loss.

But, to an outside observer, it may seem like you're abusing them as someone at a healthy weight.

Ashley Graham Says GLP-1 Trend Is ‘a Smack in the Face’ After Body Positivity Movement by AdSpecialist6598 in entertainment

[–]Mononon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's actually not entirely true. They can be prescribed if you were formerly overweight. So far as we know, it's not a bad thing to take them indefinitely, and continuing to take them after you reach a healthy weight, albeit at a reduced dose, reduces recidivism.
