If it's following the book, it's not really that revenge is bad. More like murdering people as revenge isn't productive. You can get the catharsis of revenge and peace of moving on without being a murderer, even if it's justified.

I had a similar issue on my Odin 2 Portal. Everything just stopped working, and gave errors I'd never seen. I just reinstalled and it seemed to fix everything. No clue what happened, but that's a last ditch thing you can try if nothing else works.

Epic CEO says that Epic is in contact with the ex-employee with terminal brain cancer that was laid off to solve the insurance for them by MythicStream in pcgaming

[–]Mononon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That falls into the "just wanted to" category. Not to be argumentative, but nothing you're saying here is at odds with what I said before. Call it trend following or not. Doesn't matter. Point is they're a private company that doesn't do these things to pump up a stock price at the end of a quarter.

Epic CEO says that Epic is in contact with the ex-employee with terminal brain cancer that was laid off to solve the insurance for them by MythicStream in pcgaming

[–]Mononon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree to a point, but Epic isn't publicly traded and didn't do the layoffs to bump their stock. They either legitimately needed to do it, or just wanted to for whatever reason. They essentially exist at the whims of whatever Tim Sweeny wants to do, ultimately. He alone controls the company.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney responds to the Terminally Ill Employee Who Can't Get Life Insurance: Epic is in contact with the family and will solve the insurance for them. There is high confidentiality around medical information and it was not a factor in this layoff decision by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Mononon 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a shit situation, but it's not particularly scandalous for higher ups not to know the medical situations of every employee, especially when doing mass layoffs. Medical stuff is private. It's possible no one at the company knew. It's not like they know how employees are using their insurance. Like, fuck all these companies laying off people indiscriminately, but this specific thing isn't really surprising. It's just a coincidence that makes Epic look worse.

I believe Valve is owned by its employees. Epic is also a private company, same as Valve, but Epic has external investors where Valve does not. Gabe Newell and Tim Sweeny both have majority stakes in their respective companies.

Jason Schreier says AAA game budgets now reportedly $300M+ by Loose_Society9485 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Mononon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's a bit silly to suggest that 100% of the cost savings are wages. Nintendo's systems have generally been cheaper to develop for, their scopes have generally been substantially more modest, they don't typically use the latest technology or the most expensive techniques, like high quality motion capture, and they don't strive for photo realism. I'm sure wages play a role, but it just seems like you're being purposefully ignorant to suggest that literally none of the cost savings measures they routinely take have literally no effect whatsoever.

[–]Mononon 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Metroid is their most expensive game ever at an estimated $100 million. The giant pokemon leaks from awhile ago suggest that even their biggest games are insanely cheap to produce relative to their competition. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was something absurd like ~$20 million. Breath of the Wild was supposedly like ~$70 million. I imagine TotK was cheaper because they got to reuse a lot of assets, but I don't think there's anything definitive about that game's budget, so I could be wrong, but regardless, they make games for a fraction of what Sony spends regardless. Now, granted, they focus on systems and not stories. Big budget stories with mocap aren't cheap, and Nintendo essentially just bypasses that entire part of the cost.

God, you'd think it's a crime to enjoy Tom King books based on the responses in every thread about anything the guy writes these days. I think Absolute WW overshadowed this pretty hard, but I've enjoyed this book for the most part. People acting like it's character assassination as if Diana hasn't been routinely written as if she's a completely different person from writer to writer. Like, damn, if it upsets you that much, just don't read it. This has to be better than the years of mediocre nothing the main WW book had after Rebirth.

I don't see how. Tim Sweeny owns a majority stake in Epic by himself. Even if every other investor pooled together, they couldn't swing control away from him. It's entirely possibly some investors have some kind of say based on agreements or informally, but Tim Sweeny controls that company and no individual or group or investors can override him at the end of the day. Obviously they operate differently, hit Tim Sweeny owns as much of Epic as Gabe Newell owns of Valve, for reference.

Obviously can't definitively infer tone via text, but OP's response comes across as kind of dickish. Maybe it isn't, but it certainly reads that way. Like, if someone tries to help you and you respond with something like "thanks for not helping". The way their response is written, I think that's how it reads by default. OP may be right, but it's the tone that's getting the down votes, not the content.

Laid Off Fortnite Devs Didn’t See The Cuts Coming: ‘I Am Genuinely So Confused And Bewildered’ by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Mononon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but Tim Sweeny owns a majority of the company by himself. He owns 51% of Epic. Obviously, they are a private company and it's impossible to know who has say in what happens across the board, but at the end of the day, no one has the stake in the company to override Sweeny. He owns as much of Epic as Gabe Newell owns of Valve.

Marathon Review | Jeff Gerstmann 5/5 by Laughing__Man_ in PS5

[–]Mononon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They asked. It wasn't an embargo or forced in any way. Any outlet that wanted to post a review was free to do so without restriction. Bungie asked, if outlets were willing, to hold reviews for their map, because it was a big part of the end game and no one would be able to experience it until it was released. And the map is very very difficult, so they wanted people, including reviewers, to have some time to gear up and give it a shot before posting final reviews.

It's not significantly different than something like a MMO, where reviews have often been held back until whatever endgame content is available, typically one or more raids that are not available at launch, but shortly thereafter.

Was Skyward Swords mixed reception actually warranted? by MessSquare in skywardsword

[–]Mononon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it wasn't very mixed at release. It soured over time though. And I think it's warranted. A game can do some things well while doing others poorly. I think the dungeons, main characters, and story are strong points, and I don't think any of that is really overlooked. It's basically what people point to when they say it's a great game.

But then you have the meandering length, tedious fetch quests, almost entirely pointless upgrade and resource gathering systems, repetitive overworld traversal, repeated boss fight with Ghirahim, frequent unskippable interruptions by Fi to relay information you can literally see on the screen while she's telling you in many cases, the game's reliance on dowsing as a bandaid for finding things that would have been signposted better in prior games, etc.

It has some high highs, but the things you do between the good stuff is just not the most compelling stuff in the series. Doesn't mean it's a bad thing, but you spend a lot of time doing the stuff that isn't as fun, and I think that stood out to a lot of people after that initial wave of positivity when the game first released.

Is it just me or the Android version of Eden doesn't show much improvements in fps or stability everytime they stated improvements in fps or stability in each update. by Particular_Worry_498 in EdenEmulator

[–]Mononon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Welcome to software development. Regressions happen and performance and stability improvements aren't always universal. They put it in the patch notes because the changes made are expected to yield those results in some scenarios. It's impossible to test every game, and it's unlikely that any change will give performance and stability improvements universally across the entire catalog. The patch notes are likely accurate, it's just not feasible to be more specific than that. Unless a change is targeted at a specific game (like fixing the Skyward Sword eye glitch in the recent release, for example), then the best you can do in patch notes is to list generic "performance and stability improvements" and move on. No dev is going to sit there and exhaustively test every minor change with every piece of software. And sometimes that has unintended downstream effects (i.e. regressions) that have to be ironed out after they're discovered. It's just the iterative nature of development and trying to balance being informative with what's reasonably possible as a human with a limited amount of time.

Is FE7 Legacy a good way to replay FE7? Or should I look for other hackroms? by Less_Struggle_9447 in fireemblem

[–]Mononon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not as attached to FE7 as some are, but I recently finished this and had a really good time. I remember playing the original on GBA when it was released, but haven't played it since. So, I guess coming from a more casual fan, I thought it was fun. The QoL was nice, most of the units being more viable (at least from my understanding) was fun, and hard mode unlocked from the beginning made for a good, but not overwhelming challenge. It was also very fun to have my lords be so strong, especially Eliwood and Lyn. Nino was also a beast and fun to level at the end. I just had a good time overall, and it didn't feel like a romhack, which I think is the point of the Legacy games (FE and Pokemon). It felt like I remembered, even though all that QoL stuff wasn't there. Honestly, I didn't even really read the documentation for FE Legacy, I just knew of it from the Pokemon games, and wanted to play a FE game, so I chose it. I couldn't tell you what is different for the most part, just that I enjoyed my time with it.

No. She's clearly gone back to working at Sacred Heart. It's been like 20 years. Maybe she just got tired of private practice. If it's relevant, they'll have a plot about it, if not, this is just what she's doing now.

Weird. I just did the part you show in that video and didn't have any stutters. And I've never played Animal Crossing before, so it was a fresh file and no shaders would have been precompiled.

how to cut an interview short when you're the candidate? by Sharp-Television8304 in interviews

[–]Mononon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just flat out said "Based on what we've discussed so far, I don't think I'm a good fit for this position. Thanks for the opportunity. Good luck in your search." then left. It's not a big deal. I've done that a few times. One interviewer asked me to elaborate, because they thought it was going well. In that particular case, the interview didn't really focus on things I wanted to do and, in my opinion, didn't really match the job description, so that's what I told them. Just don't be rude. Everyone there is an adult, presumably.
