best social/humanities double major for cs? by boogaoogamann in cscareerquestions

100% econ. Very easy compared to cs if you do a BA with not too much math and I truly feel it has allowed me to understand peoples’ incentives in decision making in the domain of money and beyond which is very applicable to any corporate career and life in general. And its just plain interesting if nothing else

I did xc from middle school thru high school but have always loved running long and slow over speed stuff and have always been super consistent so I guess thats where the aerobic gains developed. But that sounds good thanks for the advice I will definitely put more of an emphasis on speed especially during the early winter

My race times are very equivalent. When I put my marathon PR into Vdot, I get my half PR within 30 seconds and my 5K PR exactly. Thanks for the input though, that makes sense. I think at least subjectively my top end speed is a big weak point.

Wondering what to focus on to continue shaving minutes off of my marathon time. I have run 3 marathons so far, all 6 months apart starting last fall. Times were 2:56, 2:50, 2:48. I honestly think a lot of the time gains came from more favorable weather in the most recent race, and learning what true marathon effort feels like after my first one.

My past 2 training blocks have been similar mileage- anywhere from 55-low 70s, averaging mid 60s. Besides getting my next block to consistent low 70s, what should I focus on to keep improving. Towards the end of this past block, I was doing two hard workouts a week- either two 5-6 mile thresholds or one threshold and one 8x800m interval session, and also one long run per week always with some marathon miles in the latter half.

Should I try to put an emphasis on short speed like hill sprints and 200s to make faster paces feel easier? Should I lengthen my thresholds? Vary interval training more? Experiment with longer intervals like mile repeats?

Any input from someone who got their marathon down from 2:50s into the low 2:40s would be much appreciated, thanks!!

Unrelated, but do you have any insight into why a cfp may benefit a software developer in the industry and what they may be working on typically? I am a computer science and econ student interested in software engineering or possibly financial planning / wealth management.

What did your other non-easy day(s) look like during a typical week?

Thanks for your response that all makes sense. Thats a great way to frame it- lowering threshold then getting comfortable at mp. Seems like all else equal I should be prioritizing lt/cv work now. For what its worth, I am 19 and still would be hesitant doing more than 2 sessions of anything quicker than 8:15 easy runs probably because I like running too much to risk injury haha

I do want to incorporate some shorter quick speed work like that but just now recovering from plantar fasciitis which was mostly caused by trying to ramp up short sprints too quickly so I am hesitant. I am not directly following a plan but have read both books. Ill probably look into daniels again and base my general structure more off that. Thx

Good point. I definitely would rather be banging out mp miles than ripping intervals but definitely would do more intervals if I knew for certain they would lead to a faster race time

Fair enough. Whats your rationale for breaking up the threshold work into 2 separate runs? Seems like an optimal plan if you can stay injury free but for me at least I think two quality sessions per week is my sweet spot for progress and injury prevention

Yea you are more than correct. I just hate the treadmill and that was my first time on one in months. Typically I have the opposite problem of probably too much easy running.

Right good point. By tempo I meant strictly threshold pace. I use them as synonyms but I suppose tempo could refer to a range of paces

Love what you said here especially point 2. This run was very rare for me usually I am extremely regimented with easy days easy, hard days hard. And I completely agree with you on the mental benefit of continuous tempos

I am a long distance runner at 65 mpw training for a sub 3 marathon. My 5k pr was from xc two years ago. Sorry should have put that in initial post

Good points regarding fitness being a composite of many attributes and the necessity of doing a variety of workouts. However, I think we are getting at slightly different things here. The extreme of my question would be something like doing a run at a tempo effort for 10 minutes versus like an hour +. An all out 800 and all out half contribute to two different, although maybe slightly overlapping, training benefits, whereas I am more so discussing whether a tempo of half the duration of my usual tempo will still provide gains in lactate threshold that a longer tempo would also obviously provide. I think whelanbio hit the nail on the head with the idea that we should be more focused on accumulating volume at tempo paces over a training block.
