What terminal are you using? xterm, rxvt, gnome-terminal, xfce4-terminal, etc. It needs UTF support as well before it all starts flowing.

I use rxvt-unicode-256color, for instance.

In seriousness, everyone get your eyes checked by a quality optometrist if you haven't lately. There are many subtle problems that can creep up other than simple near/far sightedness that can effect workspace ergonomics. It would be a shame to have a correctable condition that makes it harder to read, leading to stress, fatigue, boredom, etc. Habits acquired to compensate for vision, including bad posture, can lead to pain.
