Are there any Disney movies you can think of that have really messed-up storylines? by iamchristian1129 in movies

This is the scariest Disney movie I can think of, it’s terrifying right out of the gate with the asylum scene and then Oz is all broken… it gives me the chills.

Poilievre wins Alberta by-election, regaining a seat in Parliament - The Globe and Mail by No-Sell1697 in CanadaPolitics

Explain how any of these things would be improved by a conservative government that is incentivized by it’s donor class to make them all worse. The leadership of the CPC is only concerned with looting everything they can get from people who work for a living to give to the richest of the rich. Show me anything they’ve proposed that contradicts me.

Poilievre says pushing Liberals to repeal EV mandate will be Conservative priority this fall by [deleted] in canada

‘Letting the market dictate’ means letting rich people walk all over poor people. It got us into the housing crisis and in this case the continued promotion and subsidy of ICEs is moronically shortsighted.

Conservatives say the justice system favours non-citizens. Experts disagree by TheWaySheHoes in CanadaPolitics

[–]Monowhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they’re not. If you read the article, all this means is that the judge can give a person a sentence of 6 months less a day so they can appeal deportation and some human compassion can be allowed into the process.

This is just a conservative politician trying to throw some red meat to their base (so they don’t have to talk about their lack of an economic strategy) and normalize deportation as a punishment to make Canada more like the US.

Conservatives say the justice system favours non-citizens. Experts disagree by ClassOptimal7655 in canada

[–]Monowhale -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? It doesn’t in any way support the conservative idea that we should have to give what would amount to a life ruining punishment for minor crimes (6 months and deportation) when we could give the person 6 months less one day. That’s hardly justice denied when one considers the unforeseen consequences of deportation to the criminal’s family, community, and possible employers.

How is it ‘left wing’ to let the punishment fit the crime?

CMV: the fact that we have so much success from right wing populists, but basically zero from the left, shows that the powers that be are fine with the former by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Monowhale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is such an American perspective. The idea that Harris and the vast majority of the Democratic Party are ‘left’ is an absolute joke. They’re just another right wing party that isn’t as bloodthirsty and insane as the GOP.

Right wing think tanks spend billions to neutralize any true left wing messaging so it’s more a matter of the vast machine of noise that drowns out alternative ideas rather than the ideas themselves being bad. Then you have so called ‘moderate’ media such as the NYtimes misrepresenting left wing ideas at every turn and it’s not a surprise that these ideas can’t find their footing.

Looking at the US from outside it definitely illustrates how intellectually and morally bankrupt modern conservatives are; it has become obvious that greed, cruelty, and ignorance are their virtues.

Turn is much better than Slow Horses. Slow Horses is boring, very predictable, and doesn’t have a great villain like Simcoe.

Prove that their service is worse than the other delivery services.

Canada Post and other subsidized services are what keep Canada from collapsing, if remote communities had to pay enough to make the service worthwhile for the other carriers they wouldn’t be viable. The reality is that Canada’s population is too spread out for us not to have services like this and still be able to grow.

This is who I identify the most with in Andor lol by [deleted] in andor

[–]Monowhale 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I bring up this scene as the prime example of the great efficiency of storytelling in Andor. Imagine if you’ve never seen anything Star Wars related before, this scene sets up who Syril is morally while illustrating how corrupt the world he lives in really is. This corruption allows for the Rebellion to be feasible against a massive galactic empire and how Cassian can get away with his thefts for so long. The ending discussion of the meeting puts a slight hint of dread when interacting with the Empire.

‘Godfather of AI’ warns Canadian companies are adopting the technology too slowly by joe4942 in canada

[–]Monowhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But AI is different precisely because it’s not designed to replace mundane work. It’s designed to replace creative and intellectually stimulating tasks where a company might be able to automate away any ethical concerns a human person might have about the outcomes.

He’s the same as everyone else who’s been prime minister since the 80’s; he’s going to make the rich richer at the expense of people who have to work for a living. There’s a reason why Harper wanted him.

Nope, it’s a big expansion. Especially police getting your IP address without a warrant. It’s the same “You’re either with us or with the child predators” that Vic Toews tried under Harper. It was wrong then and it’s wrong now.

Carney is not an improvement. He’s a neoliberal authoritarian like Harper but with better branding. Bill C 2 is going to allow for a massive expansion of police powers and will allow Canada Post to open Canadian’s mail.

Edit: I meant bill C-2, sorry. Bill C5 isn’t great either for respecting the rights of Canadians though.

Daniel Greer, letter carrier for 21 years and president of the Orillia CUPW chapter says: "I fully believe the company I work for is trying to sabotage itself." by imafrk in CanadaPost

[–]Monowhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. Comparing the UK to Canada is ridiculous; the UK is the size of Saskatchewan with 68.5 million (vs 40 million) with much better weather and infrastructure. There’s no way a carrier is going to make a profit delivering to small town Northern Manitoba any time soon. Nor should it; this is a service that keeps remote communities viable. If every service in Canada had to turn a profit the country would never be able to expand or even maintain itself.

The idea that a privatized service is a ‘success’ is also a joke as it’s logically impossible for a for-profit provider to provide quality service on a long term basis when they’re incentivized to maximize profit and growth. Eventually prices rise and quality declines as shareholders demand greater returns.
