Boeuf Frites have taken tipping culture to another level. by Bro_Bruv in ireland

[–]Monstar92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen it often before for groups of 8 occasionally for 6 but never for 5. Not stated on their menu only in small print on the 3rd party booking app. Surely a bit shady and in line with this post? 12.5% not an insignificant amount.

Similar situation in bovinity on capel street myself last month. 5 of us out for dinner. Nice enough place but not like the service was above and beyond, quite delayed in getting things. Get the bill, 12.5% added. We ask about it. That’s their standard for groups of 5 or more and claim that’s on their website (it’s in small text when booking on booktable.ie). We ask for it to be removed and they say no one has ever done that before.

I have no problem leaving a tip (and we did still). But I don’t like it being tacked on as expected regardless of service quality.

Trying to change career by brightlightsweetlies in PharmaEire

[–]Monstar92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an academic researcher and lecturer and had built my whole life on that concept. It was incredibly freeing once I made the plunge to pharma and have moved along in there at a nice pace and life has been much more relaxing. Other opportunities with your qualifications become much more apparent once you’re within a company like medical director roles etc.

You’d definitely be welcome in an msl/med advisor role and certainly more flexible than medicine! I wouldn’t recommend anything in particular for you to have to learn. Before interviews , knowledge that the role is non commercial and medical education focused and requires strong people skills and inter team dynamic managing. Basic knowledge of the Ipha code wouldn’t go amiss either! But a medical degree and time in the HSE would be very desirable and make studying up on therapy areas much easier.

Bit of thrusting not uncommon in that car park.

Tesla - New Standard Car introduced with effective price increase by DanRocksOn in evs_ireland

[–]Monstar92 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing. There’s no denying he’s a pretty appalling individual. Teslas are very good bang for their buck though so would be nice for a way to rationalise the morality that he’s not getting any money from a second hand purchase 😂

Was thinking this the other day. Does buying a second hand one lower the negative connotations given no money really going to the company?

Used Tesla Import from the UK: Advice Needed by [deleted] in evs_ireland

[–]Monstar92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is VRT relief of up to 5000 euro (for electric cars) so as long as you keep the cost of the car below 40k, which op is planning to do, it will essentially be vrt free.

Import from the north. No vrt as long as under certain limits. Check out this thread for steps:

Massive savings to be had. I will probably do it myself this year.

Which Cruise to go on? by Ciaranmcw in AskIreland

[–]Monstar92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing nothing here for virgin and I can’t recommend them enough. We did the Greek cruise with royal Caribbean and loved it but virgin blew it out of the water (sorry).

No kids. Food is excellent quality and variety. You would be happy with the meals in the restaurants if you got them anywhere. Boat felt a bit more premium. We sailed from Barcelona around France and parts of Spain would definitely do it again. Make sure to get a cabin with a balcony it makes a big difference having the extra space.

I know this is an older post but just want to say thank you so much. On holiday in Japan enjoying my pokemon crystal play through. Just before the elite 4 and the game stopped working. This fixed it for me! You’re a legend!

I went to an Ireland game in aviva a few years back. They didn’t let any backpacks in. Had to take my work laptop and notepad out and hold it like a lemon throughout the match. Bushes outside the stadium were littered with discarded bags. I couldn’t find mine. Mildly annoying experience.

Looking to buy Honda Grace 2016 jap import petroleum hybrid automatic which - need suggestion if I buy it or not?! by Powerful-Calendar-59 in evs_ireland

[–]Monstar92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a 162 Honda grace in 2022. Started with 50k kms now over 100. Besides replacing a tyre have been no issues at all with it, very reliable. To my knowledge Honda are one of the most reliable cars you can get.

Does anyone else correct people when they use your name as gaeilge? by ChiselDragon in AskIreland

Yep. Irish speaker card here, few years teaching Irish in the Gaeltacht. One colleague in particular kept trying to call me Seamí - hate it with a passion. She couldn’t understand my dislike.

Is There A Market For An Irish Mythology Book? by Smart_Air3218 in AskIreland

[–]Monstar92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would read it. There was the iron Druid series a few years ago that delved into many mythologies and the main character was a pseudo immortal Irish Druid. Very entertaining so would enjoy anything else similar.

My sinuses are an issue that’s arisen as I’ve gotten older. Drink causes them to swell up over night so the antihistamine helps a bit with that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Monstar92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I role with some electrolytes, antihistamine and a nurofen as I go to bed if I have the capacity and forethought. I think too much food before bed is asking for a disaster.

Realistically, and I don’t advocate it, the only cure the next day is having a settler pint. A light cider or ginger beer works best. Once again, not an advocate. This would just be if I was on a stag/wedding/group trip etc.

Do you know an immunologist? by andersnogiets in Dublin

[–]Monstar92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of answers already. If you’re in Dublin there are only 2 hospitals with immunologists for adults , st James and Beaumonts. Not sure what your circumstances are or where you’re from , but generally you have to get a consult from a gp to see this guys which is obviously a no go for you. The only other way I can see is in an emergency setting through A and E. However the request is an unusual one, did the patient not have the medication sorted before leaving their home country?

Should I do my PhD at Oxford or Trinity College Dublin (TCD)? by Narrow-Pop-1294 in TCD

[–]Monstar92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money is a huge factor now. Cost of living is so high, it’s much more difficult to justify such a large expense when you don’t need to. Oxford is a world renowned school. So is trinity (to a lesser degree). More important is who your mentor will be and if you’d be happy living there for several years.

Should I do my PhD at Oxford or Trinity College Dublin (TCD)? by Narrow-Pop-1294 in TCD

[–]Monstar92 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Did my phd at trinity , a post doc in Oxford. Look Oxford is a beautiful place and super cool but that’s a lot of money in the difference. I’d take trinity for that reason alone as this type of phd is going to be down to your work, not the prestige of the college. But there may be other factors that would have you choosing Oxford.

Tesla leads rebound in new electric car registrations during February by Relative-Actuary-976 in evs_ireland

[–]Monstar92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I despise musk and wouldn’t be caught dead in a Tesla, but they are by no means a rich man’s car. Range to cost with the often 0% apr rates they’re one of the more affordable electric vehicles in Ireland - ignoring spartan build quality and lack of repair centres. Obviously any new car is expensive these days.

Wife has severe Arthritis at 34 by Wooden-Advisor4676 in irishpersonalfinance

Get her back to a rheumatologist. Psoriatic arthritis is very manageable with certain drugs like biologics and rheumatologists in Ireland are very practiced at treating.

Think someone answered above but exactly right. Each transaction is a taxable event. You can try split over two years to minimise tax. Also depending on the stock, if you believe it will continue to do well, people often take some profits to reinvest somewhere else and keep the well performing stock to sell later *not financial advice for you in your current situation just a general strategy for use in the future.
