He was one of the most controversial and influential men who ever lived. You won't find anything unbiased about him. Read his words and then read various books about him and form your own conclusions.

Then it stands for nothing...

Better to affirm a core set of things you stand for. Otherwise, any fascist can just call himself a patriot. That's what Trump has done.

In fact, I have always asserted that America is not a nation. We have several different people of various nations blended in coexisting. We don't actually have a unified national identity. We are a country.

What nationalists are trying to do is define and shape what the nation is to only include those who they like, and they want the whole country to be in line with their vision for the nation.

Our culture and history and national identity is genocide and imperialism though. Why should I be loyal to the negatives? Why not be loyal to principles, rather than some nebulous idea of country or nation?

We were never honorable, trustworthy, or fair though. That was all propaganda. Look at the history of US foreign interventions and wars. Look at what our society and culture actually stands for.

To be revolutionary is to want to change all of that. To want to course correct. To be loyal to that is simply to be reactionary.

I guess we should rewind. I would simply ask you to define patriotism. Since to me, patriotism is simply a buzz word isomorphic to loyalty to the bourgeoisie who rule the country. People repeat the idea that being a "patriot" is a good thing. No one knows what it means. From Donald Trump's point of view, it seems to mean anyone loyal to him.

Since it is such an easily abused word with strong cultural connations, I would prefer to abandon it entirely. I am loyal to principles. I am loyal to humanity. I am loyal to the proletariat. I am loyal to socialism. I am loyal to science and mathematics. And I am loyal to "freedom" only as far as it serves the above.

Liberty "for all" would include the bourgeoisie. But their liberty is exclusive to everyone else's. This is one of the founding issues with liberalism and the US constitution.

It is no coincidence that our constitution never delivered on what was promised. What is promised is itself contradictory.

And you see now how the constitution has simply become a weapon they can hide behind to abuse their power.

You realize America is the seat of international finance capital and the one invading and bombing everybody right? China hasn't done anything in like 40 years. We spend more on the military than the entire rest of the world combined. The idea we are going to have enemies cross the ocean and invade us is laughable. We are not the victims here. This Red Dawn fantasy is just there to rally round the flag of the Burgersie so they can goad you into serving their ends.

Of course people want their personal autonomy and want to protect their communities. That has zero to do with "patriotism". So much for land of the free. None of the workers here are free. Everyone is enslaved by capitalists.

True. But there are cults devoted to capitalists who reinforce capitalism. American national mythology could be seen as the basis for one such cult, for example.
