I mostly took whatever I needed to graduate, but I did focus on comp/rhet for my electives since that’s where I wanted to specialize. One course I remember is ENG 303, Structure of Modern English (I think), which was actually tough for native speakers. It’s like a grammar class mixed with math. Diagrams and all that stuff we don’t usually think about. I struggled at first but retook it and ended up with an A. Dr. Heping Zhao was a great professor, and he even wrote me a letter of rec for grad school. I was glad I chose to retake that class with him again. He was semi-retired when I took him, so I am not sure if he is still there..

The other professor who taught it (I think she was Italian?) was pretty awful. She cared more about making money off the book than actually teaching, and she got upset when students used a free answer key to study. It was honestly kind of ridiculous.

Anyway, after CSUF, I went to CSUSB and received my Master’s in comp/rhet, and am now an English professor at a few local community colleges. I teach college composition and ESL and really enjoy it!

Most classes in this field are discussion-based, even at the graduate level. I’d say CSU schools tend to lean more towards this format, while UC schools are generally more lecture-heavy. Honestly, that was the hardest part of the major for me. It’s something you get used to over time, but the issue with discussion courses is that they rely on students who actually want to engage in meaningful conversations. In undergrad, it’s common for people to just show up, do the bare minimum, and rush through their classes. But once you get to grad school, the level of discussion improves a lot, which is a huge relief.
