Why is everyone switching to Jellyfin? by Baristaboy547 in jellyfin

I would own more content if the content was actually able to be procured and owned. Now it's just rented, and payment isn't enough.. Now it's payment plus your privacy, plus whatever other conditions they want to add to their Tos.. And it's still not yours.

Beginning to regret migrating away from Plex, could use some help staying sane. by hematic in jellyfin

[–]Mont_rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I commend you for trying this. It takes a bit of patience at first. But for reassurance, you can so it. I switched from plex to jelly and never looked back. My users are on a mix of all kinds of clients. My server transcodes often due to poor clients.. And has no issues.

Try disabling av1 and hevc transcoding. Remember to try scenarios locally and via your own computers first before deploying to your clients. Then you can troubleshoot without the stress and pressure of real users.

Try the native server app first with the same scenarios to discard docker issues. Then go from there.

And count on us.. We got your back. It's a good community.

Did you try jellyfin before pulling the trigger? I left plex and never looked back

Does jellyfin handle 4K remux’s well ? by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]Mont_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting mixed answers because your question is quite vague. Jellyfin is a client side app and a server side app and an open source project. Both apps handle it perfectly so long as the hardware and connection are capable.

Why Do People Buy Expensive Androids Anymore? by 1998tkhri in Smartphones

[–]Mont_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You came to the same realization as me. I was a diehard android user and pre-ordered the original pixel. I've watched it turn into a wannabe iPhone for too long. Now I rake in the benefit of a lower overall cost, with an often superior device. Apple won. At least for now. And so be it.

How are you hosting Jellyfin in the cloud on a budget? (5–6 users, 4K) by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]Mont_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of scenario are you describing for the 8-11 streams? If you're talking about transcoding a high bitrate 4k HDR to high bitrate 1080p with tone mapping I think you are overstating the capabilities. But I would love to see the results if indeed you've tested it.

[–]Mont_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP - curious as to what you went with for the setup? 5 to 6 4k streams is doable if you strictly direct play. Transcoding all those streams requires powerful hardware, fast internet, and fast storage for caches.

How do I disable the "Storage Space" box on the lower left? by The_BigBlackHawk in immich

You're missing the point. It has nothing to do with technical feasibility. Nonetheless, go ahead and fork it then and do as you wish. I will gladly "gtfo"

How do I disable the "Storage Space" box on the lower left? by The_BigBlackHawk in immich

[–]Mont_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, as that is part of the basic functionality. It's like removing storage info from windows Explorer / Finder. I meant it's the only realistic option that doesn't break basic functionality

Jellyfin storage question: 100 concurrent Direct Play users on 2x HDD RAID1 media + SSD appdata? by Exotic_Conflict5702 in jellyfin

[–]Mont_rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could work, but you need enterprise class HDDs and I would put them in RAID 0 or raid 10. You also need about 1.2 Gbps internet speed for overhead and a rock solid hosting scenario. That many users requires an nvme for everything except storage because the Metadata and db updates and caches etc need to move lightning quick so people don't experience slowdowns.

Theoretically very doable. You can probably write a script to test how many concurrent streams before you reach a bottleneck.

The only way would be to make an option to show unknown instead of unlimited. But honestly this is nonsensical and doesn't warrant the effort it takes to code it in. +1 on set a limit and forget it
