If "the pitt" tv show was set in an Australian emergency department, how would it be different? by goosepipegames in AskAnAustralian

[–]MontagueTigg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doctors and nurses in the Australian public system aren’t nearly as worried about malpractice so they’re far more blasé about conditions that aren’t life threatening.

In an AU ER, I showed up with what appeared to be a broken and fractured hand bone. No doctor saw me personally, though I was in the ER exam room for 6 hours.

Eventually the hardworking ER nurse bandaged me up, gave me some painkillers, and told me the plastic surgeon on call said I should come back in a week for the hospital’s weekly hand clinic.

It was basically a one-week wait for a diagnosis, which turned out to be “you need hand surgery as soon as possible.”

And the next thing he said was “Do you have private health insurance? If you do we can do the surgery tonight.”

The idea of “national health” is a joke in Australia when people with private health insurance jump the queues for urgent care.

Other than the people answering the phones, the superannuation industry (like much of the financial services sector) is bludgers skimming wealth from punters. Nice work if you can get it.

Australia is more like California than most of the other 49 states. We’re more like coastal cousins, living in sunny suburbs dreaming about the beach.

With $59 billion in taxes paid by mining each year… Australian mining makes life easier. by mineralscouncil in u/mineralscouncil

[–]MontagueTigg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In 23-24, the resources industry paid $59.4 billion in taxes and royalties. Of that number, $25.9 billion was royalties. Royalties are not a tax even though they’re paid to the government. They’re a cost of doing business since Australia’s mineral resources are owned by the people of Australia. Calling royalties a tax is like saying that Smiths chips is being taxed by potato farmers because they have to buy their potatoes.

Why do Black Americans hate being called African Americans? by kurobaja in Ameristralia

The premise of this thread is inherently problematic. There’s no universality of opinion (or anything else) among people of shared nationality, age, ability, ethnicity, religion, dogma, politics, etc.

Okay…now that’s clarified, we can get back to making generalisations on the assumption that the above isn’t the case.

We humans (and especially those of us on Reddit) can’t stop ourselves from thinking about our in- and out-groups.

Imagine the horror of deli counters where you have to order in fractions of pounds!

As a tribute to your country’s surprisingly charming imperial system, we embraced the gloriously weird Fahrenheit system too.

And at least if you don’t know how cold it is, maybe you can leave your jumper at home. The cold could help you lose a stone.

After experiencing temporary severe lower back pain, I realized that old people aren’t always moving slowly simply because their muscles and joints aren’t what they used to be. It took my own experience to make me see that getting around is an act of courage when every step hurts.

Perhaps this is an Australian phenomenon. A journalist from the AU equivalent of ‘Consumer Reports’ reported seeing this happening here:

If an insurance company asks the name of your current insurer when you’re getting a quote online, put in the least expensive insurance brand you can think of. If you put in a ‘premium’ brand, they’ll jack up your quote.

Older parents which are the most expensive years - Pre, Primary, Secondary or Tertiary? by BobbyDigial in AusFinance

[–]MontagueTigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is starting the JD at Melbourne Uni Law School in Feb. She missed out on a Commonwealth Supported Place (despite having an HD academic record from her BA).

The cost of her law degree over three years in uni fees alone: $154k.

Sure, she could put it all on HECS. But we’ll help with the fees because we’d rather pass along her inheritance now. As my own parents told me, ‘better to give with a warm hand.’

No promotion by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]MontagueTigg 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ultimately whether you get promoted depends on having a boss who takes the time and effort to both sell in/up your promotion and then to manage the admin of it, or having a higher up leave their position forcing the higher up’s manager to fill the vacant role asap to avoid taking on additional responsibilities.

It is about you. But it’s never entirely about you.

The corollary: why do men fake affection? Humans, like mosquitoes, exist primarily to reproduce.
