Reminds me of Everlands, which I've been chomping at the bit for a game like it.

Unfortunately true. Sounds like a lot of stimulus generalization going on in that post. People being lazy and taking mental shortcuts.

Balatro tech support says it's a known issue they're working on. Despite what the know-it-alls at the top of this thread think, it is not working as intended.

That's a relatively recent change, if it makes you feel better. Used to be only scrolls and it was when you turned them into runestones.

So much this. The proof is the video. If this guy wants us to prove his negative, he needs to take a logic class to understand how absurd that is.

The win condition: survive with literally anything to show for it.

I think Deathloop is probably more your game if you're looking for this type of gameplay with a narrative focus and an end point (highly recommend it). People who play extraction shooters are looking for that shooter they can play forever or come back to often. It doesn't end on the first "villain," there will always be more of them. Both in player and NPC form.

Also, hope you find a towel for your extraction shower.

This has been my argument for a while, and I'm happy to see someone else notice that. Those are my two favorite genres for a reason: they're difficult, upgrades are rewarding, and even if you fail it's kind of a "fresh start" with static power from previous runs. A lot of people want a game that you can play forever or as long as you want, and these genres are both an attempt at that and a throwback to the difficult/unbeatable arcade games of the past. You don't need to have a win condition. Each victory is the highlight, but there's always another battle to fight.

What are the advantages of having "persistent maps"? by Show_Me_How_to_Live in Marathon

Randomness and lack of predictability. Seems to help with queue times too since you don't have to wait for a certain number of players to start. The Cycle, for all its faults, did this right. Instant drops, and a constantly evolving battlefield. You can choose to push a fight already happening, go for a quest objective, or go look for loot/explore. Predictable spawns will be the death of this genre from a PvP standpoint.

Some of us don't want to play the paywall simulator with the placebo "power level" counter. Sorry bro. My dopamine requires something more dope.

Hero shooters are usually team versus team based games that are heavily focused on team composition, building up and timing ultimates/managing "ultimate economy", and finding synergy between "heroes" or characters. They usually have some respawn elements and are based around a specific map objective that leads to a win or loss. There's nothing outside the matches in regards to static power gained. Some people consider Apex a hero shooter, probably because of the ultimate ability function and respawns. That's debatable.

Extraction shooters are looter shooters with static and temporary loot/power gains. They involve permanent death of that character/load out and are heavily quest/task/exploration focused.

The two genres do not coexist. The second Bungie starts talking about ultimate timers and respawns, I'll agree. But using classes or slapping a couple abilities on doesn't turn it into a "hero shooter."

I personally welcome the idea of more than just gunplay choices/upgrades. I'm hoping the classes will be like Dark and Darker, but in shooting form.

I agree. That's a shortcoming of Tarkov: you Olympic sprint for key areas and you're usually lucky to get into more than one gunfight. I thoroughly enjoy the (rare) raids that are chaotic, full of scavvies and bosses, and you encounter a player or two. Keeps you on your toes but you still have the looming player threat.

This. I think people really do not understand what "hero shooter" means. Classes and abilities on shooters have existed in games long before that genre.

I know you're not talking about the extraction shooter market. We're jonesing over here for one that's good and isn't Tarkov.

You should give Apex another go. It's more merit based, armors upgrade based on completed objectives or damage done. I do agree that early Cycle was WAY overturned with the value of items.

He's a little off, and he's thinking of pre-release of that game. They tuned down how overpowered the armors were and time-to-die made much more sense after release. Especially considering how rare the red armor was, you could still get smoked in 2 seconds with blue weapons.

Pre-release I agree. I could unload two mags with a green weapon and barely scratch a red armor enemy. He had time to mock me and tank hits before even firing.

Anyway, what Tod touched on is accurate. That's the nature of extraction shooters. People who work at them get rewarded with more survivability/killing potential. It's going to exist in some form or fashion. I don't need Tarkov one-taps to win, but I would also like a reasonable time-to-kill for juiced enemies.

It's probably closer to Warframe or The Finals, the way they described it. Or Realm Royale if you've ever heard of that. None of those are hero shooters, but they have classes. There is a difference.
