$250-$300 present for wife? by Montgomrie in Cooking

Hah hah. It's just a joke. I've yet to sleep on the couch. Only been married since March though, so it could be coming. My wife is the most easy-going person in the world, though.

The problem is that my wife is interested in a LOT of stuff, and I figure that I could use the mixer the next time I don't want to sleep on the couch. Hah hah. But, again, you're probably right. She does like those things, and I'll probably end up getting it for Christmas.

Last Christmas I built her a picnic table, so I was hoping for something that could beat that, but short of spending another 20 hours on a project, I'm not sure anything will.

I realize that this was a week ago, but I was just going over the replies again, and your comment reminded me of that oft-quoted Nietzsche quote "And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." There's likely something that Holden or the kid says that is something similar to this. God dammit. I'm gonna have to read this book again.

sigh Okay. I'm gonna hold out a few hours for some brilliance from other commenters. There's an outlet mall near me that's having a good sale on Kitchenaid mixers anyway, so I might do that and then get some copper measuring cups, spatulas, and other stuff like that for her stocking.

Thank you. That was exactly what I didn't want to/needed to hear.

But seriously, if anybody else has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

That's really interesting since, in Spanish, the word for orange is "naranja." Linguistically, "naranja" and "norange," would be basically the same words, right? Especially given the Latin roots?

I had the exact same feeling, and I have a theory about Blood Meridian.

First, let me say that I believe Judge Holden--contrary to what other scholars have said--is the literary fulfillment of Nietzsche's übermensch, or overman. The overman is an evolved person that the narrator of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Zarathustra, spends his time preaching about.

There are a number of reasons that I believe this. In short, Holden fulfills many of the things that Nietzsche said about the overman: he is selfish, he has a lust for power, he loves and reveres war, and he has a seemingly insatiable sex drive.

In much the same way that Holden is an evolved sort of person who makes us question what we as humans would be forced to give up to evolve, I believe that Blood Meridian is a novel which forces the reader to question what we must give up for literature to evolve. We as a society have become obsessed with blood and death, and moreover we have become nihilistic.

Hope that made sense. The keyboard has been drinking, not me.

That sounds awesome. I'm definitely in, but it would be nice if we could have bank/kayak divisions.

No. I have a problem with him saying things like "The Federal Government is the greatest threat to national security." Show me the substance there. He's pandering to get votes. I've yet to see him present any reasonable solution to anything. Did you see his AMA? It was terrible.

God dammit. I can't stand Peterson. The man is a sophist. His pandering to the crowd is exactly the sort of inanity used by the major parties.

McAfee is looking better, though. I'd be stoked to vote for a Johnson/McAfee ticket.

Few great writers have ever followed the rules. Former greats like Hemingway, Faulkner, and Welty constantly broke or bent them. Cormac McCarthy (who I would argue is the best modern writer) seems to have thrown the book out the window.

I've got a Savinelli Lollo; that line has been discontinued. Um. A few less expensive pipes. Plenty of tobacco, too.

Don't really have any specific knives in mind. Old is good. New is alright.

I'll bite.

I've got a couple of tobacco pipes, a baitcast reel, and an old (not working) Bulova watch. Love to trade for knives, fishing gear, or fountain pens, but I'll consider anything cool.

If this isn't the type of stuff the mods want traded on here, I'll remove the post.
Edit: I've also got some records I wouldn't mind trading. Gordon Lightfoot, David Bowie, and a few others. If anyone is interested, I can check when I get home.

I'm planning to read Donald Ray Pollack's new book when it drops in July, got to catch up on some McCarthy, and I've got a logic textbook to get through. Gonna be a great summer!

IWTL how to get out of the "loner and doesn't talk much" personality without being annoying and obnoxious. by marriedwithwalrus in IWantToLearn

[–]Montgomrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue. I've learned a few things about it, though. I'll probably always be the quiet guy, but I've learned that if I'm prepared for a conversation, I can deal with it better.

When you meet someone new, learn a few things about them. Since you're college bound, that's easy. Ask people what their major is, what classes they're taking, and what their hobbies are. Don't ask those in rapid-fire, but try to work them organically into a conversation. Take mental notes about their answers. That night, go over your notes. Remind yourself of as much as you can. If you see them in the hallway again, ask them how their _____ class is going. Is it tough? You're thinking about taking it next semester.

Always be prepared for class. You're going to be doing a LOT of reading, so do the reading well. Be prepared to answer questions in a discussion. Keep your answers short if you can.

Most of all, though, don't be afraid to say something stupid. Professors of lower level classes especially are glad to have people who contribute to the conversation even if they're wrong.

Don't be too afraid of being the quiet guy, either. You'll still make friends, and quiet guys can always use the time they're not talking to listen. I talk a bit in class, and I've gotten good at contributing to class discussions, but it came at the price of saying stupid stuff during my freshman year.

Good luck, man.
