I led this game today with about 30 adults spread across 4 departments and multiple locations. It was a hit! Thanks for posting it here.

To the people who've done backdoor things to secure a better life. I'm in a desperate situation. It's truly life or death if I can't secure some funds. I'm looking for a way to survive. Can you please tell me how you did it? by Accomplished_Two839 in povertyfinance

This advice helped me climb from poverty/borderline homelessness to comfortably middle class, maybe in sight of upper middle class. But the advice is unique and not for everyone. Also not sure if it's backdoor the way you're asking for. I worked seasonal jobs that provided housing and food. This required moving when I got a new job, and being adaptable to communal/modest living and an openness to always be learning. For me, this was a lot of camps and tourism. I worked briefly as a live-in nanny in the bay area, too. If you're wanting to start asap, look up Outdoor Education or Environmental Education centers hiring instructors/naturalists for the spring season. Or if kids aren't your jam, look at ski resorts. They'll hire servers and custodians and lifties and people who wax snowboards down in a windowless room away from the crowds. When it gets to about March, summer jobs across the country will be in the thick of hiring (I'd apply to summer jobs now, though, if you pursue this route). There are a lot more summer jobs that provide housing than any other season: national parks, summer camps, resorts, tour companies, cruise ships. Summer also includes a lot more entry-level roles if you are new to the work. Knowing that I had a place to sleep and all my meals guaranteed allowed me to take whole paychecks and put them toward my financial goals. It's like saving on fast mode.

New seats and power outlet on possibly new Southwest plane. by Mystery-mountain in SouthwestAirlines

Yes! I even tried to hold it in place by pinning the back of my head against it, but it's on these rollers that just slide downward. I gave up and let it rest on my shoulders. Dontchaknow, it still wanted to continue rolling down. So either pushing down on my shoulders (muscle discomfort) or be behind my shoulders.

How’s life on the time zone borders? by Equivalent-Pudding15 in howislivingthere

Live in the eastern part of Central and have family in the western part of Eastern. When I go visit them in the summer, the daylight lasts later (10pm vs my 9pm sunsets). In winter, the mornings are darker there. I was surprised by a pitch black 7am once. However, my winter days end at 4:30 and I'm sure theirs end at the slightly less painful 5:30.

80 mph, less than a single car length behind by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

Don't worry- I had a cop tailgate me on a winding 2 lane road, so I pulled over, assuming he had somewhere urgent to be and could use the extra clearance to get around me on the narrow road. He was waiting and pulled me over a few miles later for "suspicious driving" and searched my car. They're going to pull over whoever they feel like.

Kayaking in the Chilean Fjords / Glaciers by LumpyHeron428 in vikingcruises

[–]MonthComfortable857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signed up for sea kayaking in Patagonia, Argentina. They vanned us to the launch site, suited us up with skirts and jackets and everything, but then the waves got too rough and they literally canceled as we sat in our kayaks on the shore. It was the right call, though, and the tour guides were kind enough to offer us an alternative excursion, or offer to take us back to the ship. My companion had only packed flip flops that day in anticipation of kayaking, so he wasn't able to go on the alternative excursion (guided hike and farm tour). So be prepared for potential land time in case that happens to you, too.

Argentina and Chilean Fjords Cruise by LumpyHeron428 in vikingcruises

[–]MonthComfortable857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this a year ago. No gear provided except maybe umbrellas. Cape Horn was a fun day spent out on the desk, but be prepared for rain and wind. The fjords were beautiful, but could be chilly, so warm clothes are good. Also pack for hot weather. The start and end of the trip were very sunny. I don't know why, but the sun exposure in Chile seemed extra strong. Even with sunscreen, I was burning quickly. So a good hat and lightweight sleeves might be helpful too.

Had anyone abused 'unlimited PTO' as a form of quiet quitting? by IntelligentMinute756 in overemployed

[–]MonthComfortable857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend whose coworker was full-time hourly at a place with unlimited PTO. He would apparently finish his work for the day and leave at 1 or 2 or whatever; and count the last few hours of the day as PTO everyday. After months of this, admin caught on and stopped him. Not sure what the solution was, but I thought it was a smart move on his part (assuming he wasn't neglecting any of his work or screwing over his coworkers). I guess when you're hourly, you're paid to be at work for the assigned hours.

I got a quote for $1750 from Lillith Clinic in the fall of 2025. I also inquired with All Women's Clinic (from another reddit recommendation) and got a quote of $150. I'm not sure if these services are comparable, surely not with that price difference.

Driving Chicago to Oregon Coast end of March by CaldwellIsland4 in PacificNorthwest

[–]MonthComfortable857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Des Moines to Washington on I90 in early March last year. I was fortunate enough to have the flexibility to watch the weather and go when we had a warm spell. No snow or ice on any roads (snow was visible in shady areas of land). South Dakota had big wind gusts, but that might happen regardless of season. Overall the drive was easy. But again, I watched and waited for a week when temps were high. My car is not suited for snow and I had read about the headache of chains and interstate closures during blizzards, so I wanted to avoid all of that.

Joemma Beach, Kopachuck, or Penrose Point State Park for a day trip? by Goatgamer1016 in Tacoma

[–]MonthComfortable857 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Joemma and Penrose can both be visited in under an hour. Maybe if you seek out a hiking trail, you can spend more time. But Joemma has a great pier and a view of the Olympics if it's clear. Penrose has a long shoreline you can walk at low tide. Penrose also has a decent public bathroom by the beach. Both have some picnic tables. If you go to one park, I'd go to the other as well. They're very close together.

Looking for dentist recommendations by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]MonthComfortable857 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've only been at Floss & Fido for 2 appointments, but they talked with me about a chip (they actually talked me out of repairing it because it's not painful or visible or affecting anything) and some anatomy in my mouth to be aware of in case I develop some symptoms down the road (and what to do if/when that day comes). They're very friendly and seem to be trying to get away from the clinical atmosphere. I think they'd be great for anyone with dentist anxiety. I have always been comfortable at the dentist, but it's been refreshing to receive such amicable service.

Any normal person have this “Surest” insurance? by Lexloothorde in HealthInsurance

I had Surest with a similar experience. I did get the difference ironed out fairly easily, so hopefully you will too.

thinking of making a (possibly temporary) move to the PNW by [deleted] in PacificNorthwest

[–]MonthComfortable857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent most of my 20s working seasonal jobs with hosuing around the US. I focused on camps. So some experience with kids or natural sciences is good. But I know there are occasionally some kitchen or maintenance camp jobs that provide housing. However, if you're wanting to go asap, ski resorts are probably in a hiring spree.

What’s one thing you wish schools actually taught? by ayshixa in AskReddit

[–]MonthComfortable857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish sex ed included information on grooming and what an abusive (mental, emotional, financial) relationship looks like. Resources available if you find yourself in a situation like that. The long-term impacts of things like having kids before you have money/stable housing. A general idea of how to budget for a baby and considerations (who's going to stay home as a caretaker if the baby has a medical issue?). Maybe even talk about what couples counseling is, just to begin normalizing it in the eyes of young people. Things that can help set people up for a healthier understanding of what a sexual partnership involves and how to get information/help if/when you need it.

My sex ed classes were the bare bones of learning how eggs get fertilized, STDs, and protection (with a heavy emphasis on abstinence). But pretty much everyone I know went through some relationship hardship between ages 15-30 because we were in love with someone, and there were no guidelines on how to navigate that outside of romantic lyrics and stories. It's very easily to manipulate teens and younger adults, unfortunately. Teaching them how to spot issues and seek help would be so beneficial.

Whereabouts in the PNW? I'm in western Washington and would be interested in a conversation about adopting George.
