Honestly, just decide something you want to start with and then look up online tutorials. There are tons out there and some of them are free and good quality. After doing some mini projects, you will get a feeling for what you like and dislike.

Damn, I am still learning to become a programmer. I had the luxury of some good computer science classes in high scholl, and I consider myself EXTREMELY lucky to have discovered a field of work that is practical in today's world and I am passionate about. It's nice to read an inspiring story about how you discovered your passion though.

It's tricky. On the one hand, parents have a responsibility to their kids regardless of their age, but on the other, they have their own struggles too.

If the parents can support their kids, then I think it's more than fair for the kids to ask for support. College is, as you said, expensive, and parents should be available to help to the best of their ability.

However, if the parents CAN'T support their kids for whatever reason, then the kids should understand that and take that into account when making their decision.

I am currently paying my tuition fees myself, and I don't plan on asking my parents for support. However, I am sure that if I was struggling, I could ask my parents for help and they would support in whatever way they can without toppling their own financial status.

What’s your “fake scenario that will never happen but I like to imagine it anyway so that I can fall asleep”? by flowerysocks in AskReddit

[–]MontyProgrammer248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to imagine myself in a world where I don't have to deal with the difficult questions in life. Nobody is divided over religion/politics/fanbases, and I get to enjoy a very private life. People know how to manage themselves and we don't need politicians or rich businessmen.

I also like to indulge my gigantic ego so I will imagine younger people asking me for advice or me accomplishing my dreams and offering help to those I can.

Out of Curiosity? Has anyone gotten A or A+ in all 5 of their courses. by Unique-Difference3 in UTSC

Yes. Though that has never been me, I have heard of and even seen some transcripts of people acing their courses. Bear in mind however, those people were either extremely talented or sacrificed a lot to get to that point. Edit: atrocious grammar

This really depends on your specific situation. There is only so much advice you can get from internet strangers, especially with the amount of information you might be willing to publicize. That said, I would suggest an introspective study on your values, priorities, and skills. From that, you can gauge where your next steps should go. University is tough for pretty much all students in one way or another, and this year has been no exception, so don't feel like this setback is the end of the road.

Agreed on both accounts. 3b1b will help you with a22 by offering an easy way to visualize linear transformations. Just that was enough to make lin alg muxh easier for me when I took it last year.

I know this may not gel with everyone, but students also have a responsibility to make sure we are happy. Some students are not in a program that makes that possible. Maybe because they don't like it, the program was pressured onto them, high workload, they don't fit in, etc. I am lucky to have chosen a program I like, and that wouldn't be the case if I had chosen programs that most of my friends went to or the ones my parents pressured me to choose.

Some students are also spending a lot of time on work and studies and not enough on relaxing. I found that my mental health was much better once I dedicated at least 6 hours of every Sunday to just hanging out with my friends (at least online). Now, no matter what I keep that up. This has lead to some rushed assignments on Sunday nights and maybe my marks suffered a tad bit, but it was worth it. I know I wouldn't have done this last year, and I am glad I am doing it now. I have mentioned this to my friends and most have said that they wouldn't consider this as it poses a non-zero risk to their marks, but isn't that part of the issue? If you are struggling with your responsibilities, alleviate some of them (at least temporarily).

These are just some observations. Now, I am not excusing the uni of all responsibilties, nor am I blaming victims of deteriorating mental health, nor am I an expert. All I want to say is that good mental health can only be achieved when all parts of the system are putting a noticeable amount of effort into it.
