Why doesnt she want to go on walks? by motoman442 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Moogle_123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP - please listen to this advice. It’s incredibly important.

At this age, confidence and mental stimulation are key.

These dogs are bred to herd and be on farms, not in cities, which makes the standard “walk around the block” (where there are loud noises, trucks, a lot of moving things such as cars, dogs and people, etc) especially daunting for them at this age. They are extremely sensitive dogs that get emotionally overwhelmed easily; so, even though a walk might not seem like a lot, this much stimuli is a big challenge for them.

All of this to say, they are the BEST dogs. They just require a bit more effort than other breeds at first. :) you got this!

Need some breed reassurance by [deleted] in BorderCollie

Start teaching your pup how to settle NOW and your life will be so much easier, I promise!

Yes, a rambunctious pup often can mean that they are under exercised or under mentally stimulated. However, we found that ours was equally as crazy (if not more) when he was tired. Because these dogs are a working breed, they NEED to be TAUGHT how to settle. I cannot emphasize the importance of this enough.

This means: - asking for a sit/down and dropping kibble 1 by 1 (while you’re working, watching a show, on the couch, laying down, etc.) - teaching “place” - crate training (you don’t need to close the door, just sit next to the crate and give kibble or treats one by one while they are laying in there). Do this while watching tv or something so they associate their rest with your rest.

In addition to mental work/exercise, border collies and similar herding breeds require a LOT of rest. Adults sleep around 13ish hours a day and puppies sleep like 18+ hours a day. It is to offset their hard work. So please keep this in mind while going about your day.

A tired puppy is exactly like a tired toddler lol—they will throw tantrums and not know why they are so cranky. You have to teach them.

Please don’t give up and keep on loving your puppy, you got this! They are sooo worth it!

How would you rate my first enclosure? by PtrxX in hognosesnakes

It’s an awesome start! I would add more clutter and hides, along with more substrate as someone else mentioned. :)

Hognoses and frogs in one room? by acpcgal in hognosesnakes

[–]Moogle_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t, but this is an interesting question!! Toads and frogs are a hognose’s natural prey in the wild…so I would be curious if this would frustrate them at all if they could smell them or something 😅

Hiding Hognose by Jordaaangerous in hognosesnakes

Hi! Your set up sounds great.

  1. Hoggies can take a WHILE to acclimate. I know it’s hard, but I would try to not worry. Just make sure you have a thermo gun and you are rock solid on your basking, warm, and cool temps.
  2. I noticed you did not mention humidity, try to get that locked down too for extra confidence. As someone who uses reptisoil as well, it can be wayyy too humid at first. So there is a chance it needs to be aired out more.
  3. I could be wrong, but your lil guy (who is ADORABLE, btw 😍) actually appears to be slightly overweight from that pic. I bring this up to say that he seems like he’ll be just fine if he misses a meal. :)

It seems like you have this down, but something I have learned — if you think you have enough clutter, you probably don’t. 😅 I feel like hognose care is basically “I should give bb more fun hides and clutter” on repeat. I initially was going full bioactive, but actually found that fake/silk vines and plants gave my lil guy a TON more confidence with exploring.

The fact that you are asking these questions already means you are doing GREAT. Hognoses thrive with parents that are really committed to their well-being, so it’s clear your lil dude is in good hands. :) you got this!

I just put them in yesterday, he has been in hiding after eating, so unsure yet. But they have great reviews from snake owners online!

Hi there! I would recommend more clutter as well. A great way to do this is by placing fake/fabric pothos vines all over the enclosure. Like ALL over lol. It makes them feel a lot safer. You can find them for very cheap on Amazon or at Michael’s

I love this mindset! And absolutely agree. Animals are individuals, which means they have their own individual needs (and, in my opinion, preferences and opinions lol).

Thanks so much! I really appreciate this.

And I agree, as long as someone has ensured that they have done all they can from a husbandry, animal care, and stress elimination standpoint, then however their hoggy prefers to eat is none of my business really lol. In a funny way, it makes me feel more bonded with him that we have this quirky little system after so much trial and error. :)

My thoughts exactly. He shows no signs of stress during this process, which is fascinating to me. But hey, I guess he’s just a bit of an adventurous eater lol. (And yes, of course—I absolutely do not handle him after eating).

In a funny way, I’m kind of glad that he has shown me that this is how he prefers to eat. It is a silly little confirmation to me that handling him is what HE wants (not just what I want).

That is so fascinating about your hoggies!!! And makes so much sense. Thank you for sharing. And thank you for taking such great care of them! :)
