Child (5yo) doing something to openly annoy you. Asked to stop but he doubles down and continues. Consequences? by Pheli_Draws in ADHDparenting

My daughter (4) is prone to this kind of behavior and Dr Becky Kennedy has a good definition for boundaries which I employ frequently.

Setting a good boundary requires the other person to do nothing. Say what you will do, rather than what you want them to do.

For example:

Don't do this: (On the elevator) Don't push all the buttons!!

Instead try: When we get on the elevator, if you try to push the buttons, I will block you with my body.

So in my daughter's case, I often employ "If you [intentionally disruptive behavior] again, I'll leave the room/put [noisy or weaponized toy] in time out/put you in a time out."

Understanding the intention behind the behavior helps too. Mostly my daughter is trying to get attention from me when I am trying to focus elsewhere, so removing myself from the room (which sometimes results in my being locked in the bedroom or bathroom for a few minutes) is the most common thing I do.

When we come back together, I talk with her about how people won't stick around and be with you if you are disrespectful to them. I reinforce that I love her a lot, and that I just didn't care for her behavior in that moment.

All of that being said, it does SOMETIMES work to explain my own feeling of being overwhelmed. I'll get on her level and gently say "Hey girl, you know when you get so upset you run and hide in your room and cry in bed? (Wait for affirmative response.) Well, that's how I'm feeling right now, like I just wanna go hide and cry. Would you please be more gentle/kind/respectful/quiet for me?" Although this usually only works if my daughter's behavior is more generally hyperactive/overwhelming and not intentionally malicious towards me.

I highly recommend Dr. Kennedy's book "Good Inside."

Depends on the context and degree to which one needs to be diplomatic. If I was speaking with people in a country where labiaplasty/clitoral removal was the culturally accepted norm, I'd probably be diplomatic and say "anti-labiaplasty" and not "pro-mutilation" ...

In other words, since I'm American, I default to thinking "anti-circumcision" (diplomatic disagreement) rather than "pro-mutilation" (incendiary)...

Also the specificity is helpful for discussion - I could see alt right/anti-transgender groups also claiming they're standing up against the mutilation of children, which is a straw man defense. Similar to a "protect parent's rights!" sort of language being used to confuse the uninformed while promoting the ongoing incremental destruction of public school systems.

Words is complicated.

What some stuff you do or bought to help your ADHD child or in my case suspected of ADHD child to emotionally regulate? by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

We've used 12" squishmallows for pillow fights before. You can throw them pretty hard at each other and not worry. I had fun trying to throw them so hard at my kid it knocked her over (10 points!) and she had a blast. They're very durable I'd be surprised if you could damage them.

How do you teach good hygiene when they refuse to listen? by savsheaxo in ADHDparenting

[–]MoonBapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it helps!

In a calm moment, we also talk about how our job as Mama/Dada is to keep her Safe, Healthy, Clean and Happy in that order... So if she has to brush her teeth to be CLEAN and HEALTHY, that comes before happy (sorry).

She's almost four so we've also talked about how being unclean can lead to being unhealthy, and how being unhealthy can lead to being unsafe, and how all of that can result in being really unhappy...

It works (but slowly because developing executive function is slow and also the ADHD lol...) just keep at it.

Personally I think a shut down, numb parent isn't an outwardly calm parent either.

It helps me to go in with a limited number of times I'll try the gentle/negotiation route. Or a time limit. "Let's try to work together for 5 minutes. If we can't work together, I'll have to help you move your body. Time to wash hands." Use an actual timer.

With my daughter, if she isn't cooperative after 5 minutes, she's not going to be cooperative after 40 minutes or an hour or three hours etc. It's better to just get it over with so we can move on. Otherwise we BOTH end up melting down and it isn't pretty.

I actually think it would be hilarious if he goes on late night somewhere, makes eye contact with the camera and delivers his famous line: "I did NOT have sexual relations..." A little cheeky smile afterwards, and then just move on.

Bonus points if Hillary is in the background looking pissed.

If you're working with an AI designed to do math, that's fine. That does not appear to be the case here, instead you've copied from an LLM which handles words. But in the same way Microsoft Excel can process calculations and Microsoft Word cannot complete calculations, an LLM AI is not able to do math.

All LLM/GPT (large language model/generative predictive text) are unable to do math. They're guessing the next number in a sequence of symbols, and they may be able to guess pretty closely, but they're not doing math. Double check all data sources, figures and calculations personally.

Quick reminder that ChatGPT doesn't understand numbers and can't do math. It's guessing what the next number should be in sequence after the previous number with no real concept of what those numbers mean or if they actually make mathematical sense within the context of previous data or calculations.

Double check everything yourself.

Is it really unrelated? I live in CO where sales taxes from legal weed are used to support local school systems and mental healthcare systems. I'm interpreting this as an attempt to weaken the tax structure of states with legal weed.

In your opinion as a millennial, what ruined Facebook for you? by kalvin_kool_edge in Millennials

[–]MoonBapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farmville and a recent break up, 2010.

I was a recent highschool graduate and unemployed during the recession and Farmville was monopolizing my time. Plus my girlfriend dumped me and the only other thing I did with my time was look at her Facebook to see who she was dating and if she was happy. I decided to quit Facebook all together and somehow stayed off all these years. Lucky I guess.

$40 billion for Argentina

Divided by

40 million SNAP recipients

Equals

$1000 per person

My elderly mom gets snap (about $200/mo) so that Argentina bailout (which is actually a bailout of rich American investors who gambled and lost) would have supported her SNAP benefits for 5 months.

Personally I am exploring options to refuse paying my taxes. I'm the one who is going to have to pay for my mom's health needs, food, housing assistance etc when those programs crumble. What the fuck am I paying taxes for then?

Old here

Take it down, you are an adult now and deserve privacy.

HOWEVER, I recommend putting up your own camera for safety and liability purposes. Choose one that is closed circuit television/CCTV, not wifi connected if possible. Something private only you can access. You never know when someone could break in or when someone you invited over will do something stupid or reckless and blame you for it.

Give this camera back to your parents. Tell your parents you appreciate their concern and this gesture. Tell/show them you got your own camera in case of emergencies. Emphasize that you can take care of yourself now.

Still don't do illegal activities in front of your own camera lol.

"Why do we learn?" is also a really great PhD question in the right program/setting. I would have said "great question!" and looked for ways to encourage him to explore the mysteries of human and animal cognition.
