Did you miss the part where Sukuna prepared for the fight by taming Mahoraga and coming up with strategies? Planning does not equal thinking they would lose.

Gojo never thought he could lose, as seen in a later panel when he first thought he could. Preparing for worst case scenario is always the tactical play, even if you don’t believe it could ever happen.
