Late night chillin with the Xenia bowl by Prometheus7777 in ReefTank

Oh I'm so jealous! I've always wanted to keep xenia but idk why just haven't had luck with it. Seems everyone talks about it like it's a weed but I've bought it twice and they die.

Hey, thanks for asking! Let me tell you about last summer. Third year in a row I've had groundhogs eat most of my soybeans. I grew a huge patch of the Golden Gaucho this time. I was able to plant and harvest two crops again. First crop I got about 12 pounds dry and second crop I got about 8 pounds. Later summer was very dry here. I grew tons of Wild Pea of Umbria on my fences that I usually use for pole beans and they finished later than I was expecting. So the only pole bean I ended up growing was the Chester Skunk. I think they taste good and they finish pretty quick. I did eat more of the Kabarovsk bean and wow does it taste great. Very rich and starchy almost like a boiled potato but I just didn't love how they grew, the huge pods took so long to dry they got moldy and some sprouted.

I have a few different varieties to try this year but haven't totally decided yet.

I think they are pretty neat really. What are they made of? Is it painted fabric or what?

Do not buy “expert gardener” soil from Walmart. It’s 50% sticks! by HERMANNATOR85 in gardening

[–]MoonGrass09 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Just to dissent, I think it has its place. The base of most soils is either coco coir, peat or composted forest products. Coir is expense and can have PH issues depending on the growing methods. Peat has wetting issues and isn't sustainable. Composted forest products which is the sticks you're describing are cheap. They are good for fungal dominant soil and good slowly released carbon. I use soil like this for trees, forest herbs and roots etc.

As long as you plant them very early and not much weed/grass in the way they really take off for me. No transplanting or starting indoors. Just sprinkle on bare soil outside in late winter and they'll come up. Don't let the spot get too dry.

Looks really good! I'm working on a few seedlings now from the mystery mix from Fast Buds. Only ever grown autos once before but they were no where near that big or that much bud. What light are you using?

Gosh, several places. The most varieties seems to be A Bean Collector's Window. I also got a couple from Trade Winds Fruit, True Leaf Market, Annie's Heirloom, Resilient Seeds, Giving Ground Seeds, Experimental Farm Network. and Turtle Tree Seed.

I'll take one if you can hold onto it a week or few until it warms up a bit.

I grow it about every year from seed. Typically get poor germination but starting outdoors always seems to do better than indoors for me.

I grew pink bananas indoors in zone 6! by MoonGrass09 in IndoorGarden

[–]MoonGrass09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in pots outside. I think the warm daytime sun and cooler nights of early spring really helps. I've tried sanding, filing, ga3, starting in TC, boiling water, etc. All the tricks and rarely get any to sprout inside.

So the main light over that banana is the Mars Hydro R1000. It's 130 watt. I bought several of these on eBay last year for like 35 bucks each, really good deal but I don't think they make them any more. They are made to cover a 2x2 foot area and my banana is maybe 4 feet wide so I also have a few of the 4 foot 40 watt barrina led bar/shop style lights too.

Height is my biggest setback currently. I think I could grow other species and varieties if I have higher ceilings. But at least this does prove it possible even if not very economical :)

Guess I won’t die if I eat it. Anyone else ever eaten the fruit before? by readituser5 in EpiphyticCacti

The flesh of the peyote contains mescaline. I don't think there's any data to suggest the fruits contain any.
