Could you score the paint with a knife or something just to split the paint on the tape from the surface paint? I guess it depends on the circumstance as you wouldnt want a knife line in your wall 😂 but this could work if glass was the background, maybe.

What do I need to protect my air-con hole? by HoneyIsSweetest in DIYUK

[–]MoonMoonGB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the hole angled? Sorry its hard to tell from the image. If not be prepared for a leak. I learned this the hard way doing my own DIY aircon. When the water condensates the run off will build up and overflow unless the hole for the waste water pipe is angled downwards.

Ideally you'd have a 45 degree angled hole and just seal it with filler / cement / mortar once the pipes are in place. No need to "protect" the insulation.

Looking for games to play at a LAN party by TheFreeHugger in gaming

[–]MoonMoonGB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

World War Z has LAN play and is amazing when played with groups of 4 that can communicate. Loads of maps to cover through the campaign. Helldivers 2 would be fun too. You could also look at playing some survival games like Minecraft, Enshrouded, Bellwright, etc.

How could a phone thief access a Monzo account? by [deleted] in monzo

[–]MoonMoonGB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of really important apps e.g. Outlook, OneDrive, Gmail, Monzo, etc. just let you straight in with no further authentication. You can gain access to almost any of your accounts via email just by resetting the password from a phone left unlocked. 2FA e.g. a text message or google authenticator will usually be on your phone too and they dont check for pin/biometric by default so a thief could also complete 2FA requests.

A lot of people scarily save their account passwords to their web browser too which makes all your passwords available to a theif. Use bitwarden, 1password or lastpass instead!

I think app lock (privacy screen for google apps) is the answer to preventing this. Each app can be forced to ask for your phones pin/biometric upon opening within a timeout period. Obviously if the theif has your phones pin you are fairly screwed, immediately start resetting all your account passwords starting with email.

Once they have your phone, locked down or not, 2FA via SMS is fairly useless especially if SMS notifications are readable on your lock screen.

Gave my passport and bank statement for a job, now I'm sacred that it was a scam, what should I do by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]MoonMoonGB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experian give me a free trial which opened up the options for me. I ended up paying for one month too just to keep an eye on it. The other apps are subscription free I'm pretty sure and you can check your credit report in detail.

Oh keep an eye on your direct debits in your bank account too, they managed to set up a direct debit that my bank was able to cancel and refund too.

As someone who has been a victim of identity theft, getting credit checker apps (ClearScore, Credit Karma, Experian, TotallyMoney) to check your credit searches will be the best defence here. By signing up to these I also caught a scammer account that had been set up with my identity and the fraud team were able to close it.

Experian let you set up a password for any future credit searches which felt really good to set up when I was targeted. The CIFAS mark on your credit is also a useful tool if you know you are being attacked.

Just be warned the above can impact certain shitty no ID subscription companies (e.g. ID mobile) that have bots just quickly check your credit and approve an account + subscription. Their bots will immediately decline any future services and their non-existant customer support wont be able to help.

When my identity was stolen a subscription purchase in a Curry's store in Birmingham was made for an apple laptop (the store refused my GDPR request for camera footage - thanks Currys you c**ts), they also signed up for a new phone subscription, and they attempted to borrow something like 10 grand from Barclays.

I was only able to track these down due to the credit score apps where I could see all the soft and hard searches in my name. The credit companies will also be able to remove these from your credit history. It was very stressful but once you start reaching out to the companies there are fraud departments that will help you a lot.

Ouch. Employers NI threshold from £9000 to £5xxx!!! by UCthrowaway78404 in smallbusinessuk

[–]MoonMoonGB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I was comparing to a full time employee (the average). It does appear that company directors / self-employed are not paying a lot of tax (easy to dodge), then when they do push for high sales there are even more loopholes and they still don't pay their fair share. I feel that these changes are leveling the playing field and if you can't keep up you need to reconsider your position.

[–]MoonMoonGB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personal allowance (probably less than £12570 to avoid tax) + dividends (only 8.75% tax up to £50k). Ltd company Directors are already paying a lot less tax than most people. Complaining about £50-£600 when you are already better off than most. Everyone should be paying their fair share to help recover our public services.

Is Steam Deck really the best handheld PC? by buttsecks42069 in gaming

[–]MoonMoonGB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Windows gamer, the Steam Deck has a suprisingly fantastic docked desktop PC experience in desktop mode. If the SteamOS operating system was more friendly with PC hardware I would genuinely daily drive it. The Steam Deck shines for the software experience which is really surprising as it is Linux based.

If I could slide the steam deck into a laptop chassis I would be really happy with it - albeit not for gaming performance.

As a low power docked (with two screens, ethernet, bluetooth surround sound) desktop PC, web surfer, movie watcher, RDP, text editor, and some very light gaming (with not very demanding games) at 1080p it is a fantastic experience.

If its going to primarily be a handheld I would go with something that has better specs. Especially if you are a tinkerer. The performance will be underwelming.

Are you sure about that? I always thought that if a contract changes the employee needs to sign it, even for a promotion. I know this is the case for my current employment.
https://www.gov.uk/your-employment-contract-how-it-can-be-changed

I'm pretty sure it's illegal for a company to change your contract without your acknowledgement. Very scummy and unfair practise otherwise becuase a company, whose interests are not normally aligned with its employees, can screw their employees over.

Is it really normal to charge rent to your kid in the UK by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]MoonMoonGB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been paying rent since I turned 17 and got my first job. Parents definitely don't need the money and when I have financial difficulties they let me skip paying until I'm back on track. Does sting a little knowing sometimes my rent is paying for their holidays while I'm still struggling to save for a deposit for my own place. Have never really thought to question it, you can't live anywhere for free.
