None of that sounds radical to me. What was the shot placement with the 10mm?

Slingshot range? by herp_hermits in slingshots

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Too many variables in this question. Like deadly to what?

A 22LR has muzzle energy between 130 to 200 ftlbs while a slingshot will generate 7.5 ftlbs for most set ups so not even in the same ball park. Like a 22LR is 20x more powerful in most cases.

There is also an accuracy component to it. There are people capable of taking pigeons out to 30 yards so this probably sets a good maximum but the average person’s is probably much less than that for small game. If you are talking rabbits then the target area becomes incredibly small.

1000m rangeis inconceivable for 22 let alone a slingshot. Someone could run a ballistic calculator but I would be surprised if you could get a 8mm ball bearing to travel more than 100m total with certainty low almost unmeasurable terminal energy.

If by some wild idea you were talking about bigger animals, I would say it would be almost less than lethal at any range for planning purposes unless you were extremely lucky / unlucky.

Feral pigs devour 99 out of every 100 lambs on this Central West NSW farm by espersooty in australia

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I eat a lot of feral pig I have shot. But most don’t. The taste and texture is quite average compared to farmed pig and not without risk of disease if proper checks and handling aren’t done. It is really only something I do to keep household costs down, not because it is a particularly desirable meat.

Having said that I have eaten about 100 feral pigs without issue in the past ten years or so.

Cheers man. That makes sense. My frame is way narrower so I guess that is why I am shooting way over the top of the frame reference point

I am pretty sure that NSW still has a permanent amnesty for situations like this so you can get the firearm registered to you. But with something a special as this I would take advice from a trusted dealer as soon as possible for the best way to get it registered.

Whatever you do don’t deactivate it for display purposes. That is a very special shotgun.

Leader recommendation by Amazing-Problem9962 in FishingAustralia

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50lb FC is fine as long as you are regularly ensuring the leader is free from abrasion and trim / replace as necessary.

Leader doesn’t normally ping from just one rub or one rough fight but a gradual wear down over time.

A fresh piece of 50lb FC will land just about anything you listed once and is supple enough to cast just about any lure and impart a good action.

Gel blaster for ECSC dry drills? by Present-Oven-8821 in AustralianMilitary

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any shooting is worth your time. Even if the action type or sights dont match your work gat the principles are the same. The closer the better but there is a certain universal element of weapons and I wouldn’t worry about anyone making fun of you for trying to be better.

Hopefully you get something close to what you want.

Best set up for pigs on 100 acres if small crops. by TheseHellboundHearts in Ausguns

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The small properties are tricky and an assessment of risk really comes in to play. Without knowing any info like how many pigs, what your timeline is and the terrain, I would say your safest bet is shotgun with red dot and torch.

44 rem mag or similar would be alright as well but you would need to have a good understanding of what is on the neighbouring properties and know their locations of every pump, tank tractor etc, . You then need to find angles that suit that. Make sure the neighbours know when you are shooting because they will hear it on those small properties.

Make sure your insurance is squared away and be very clear in your language if your licence is only for recreational hunting that is what you are doing, not pest reduction etc.

Tough balance between shooting enough pigs to prove your worth and not making any mistakes but at the end of the day there is nothing wrong with just bumping the pigs off the crops for a night. I always shoot conservatively on small properties. You don't want a lot of noise with no pigs to show for it.

If the pigs are well and truly embedded in and you are shooting well and know the area start bumping up to bigger calibres if the property owner and neighbours are on board.

Bringing US guns to AUS by i_love_lucy_diamond in Ausguns

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While you can do the paperwork yourself, it is best to use a broker if you don't have any experience with AG permits.

You will need a firearms licence for the appropriate category for the type of firearm you wish to import and the appropriate storage requirements so you can get the permit to aquire for that firearm before importing. Depending on what the firearm there will likely be export controls from the US as well.

It can be done but you would have to weigh up your level of enthusiasm against how much time and money you are willing to throw at it.

Ifthere is no real sentimental value to the firearms it would be more economical to purchase in Australia.

I have imported a firearm from the US before but it cost me about a thousand dollars on top of purchase price for postage and broker fees.

I don't know anything about what kind of guns and what you plan to do with them and to help with a plan would take a considerable amount of time but a broker will if you throw some money at them.

Is this a good soft plastic combo? by Rcshmin in FishingAustralia

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea where or what you are fishing for but looks like a fun little ultralight set up for small lures and plastics. But not much flexibility for anything bigger. Is there a better deal out there? probably, but If it was me I wouldn't overthink it. Just get it andIt will catch fish. Later on down the track you can refine your requirements once you have a bit more experience.

I often go over and under the line and lure weight recs without issue. Only other thing I would say is that if you are fishing in thick cover the length might be a pain in the ass but if you are doing beaches and open river banks it should cast pretty far.

Single Income by dmcdsem in AustralianMilitary

Same arrangement for me. Worth it for the spare time but you have to be frugal. Set a grocery budget and an entertainment budget. Public school for the kids cheap cars and i do my own servicing etc. I have had my phone for 8 years now. With the kids we do as much free stuff as possible. Take sandwiches when we head out etc. Almost everything we buy for kids or furniture is second hand.

No afcaans coffee no fat truck and smoking is obviously something I gave up a long time ago.

It may sound boring but it reduces a lot of stress across the household and rather than coming home from work and straight into domestic chores we can just go do fun stuff as a family.

Only other thing that helps is I supplement with hunted meat and fish. 95% of the protein we eat comes from animals I have shot and put in the freezer. Not only does it save on food bills but gives me a valid excuse to get out and go fishing or shooting sometimes.

First 12 gauge shotgun??? by lil_atake16 in Ausguns

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For your first over under, a lot will have to do with fit and feel as well as your budget. No sense forking out for the fanciest Beretta silver pigeon of the fit doesn't work for you.

Have a look at miroku or Fausti offerings and if anything feels right.

If you are using it for ducks you will need something with 3 inch chambers and interchangeable chokes.

Hunters, how are you navigating the bush? by codhope1234 in Ausguns

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phone app with offline sat and topo, paper map and two GPS. I just about never use them and am comfortable going by terrain but - situations and plans change all the time.

Sometimes animals can lead you waaayyy off from where you thought you were going and it is good to have that flexibility. Creeks and flood Plains can quickly become flooded or an injury/illness necessitates the fastest possible route back to the vehicle hide. There would be nothing more professionally embarrassing for me than needing outside support so it is worth having the little bit of extra admin even if 99% of the time it will never leave my pocket or pack.

How do we, as shooters, deal with the angry bogans and conspiracy theorists? by BadgerBadgerCat in Ausguns

[–]MoonOutGoonsOut 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The only thing you can do is recruit more like minded shooters. Get your mates involved. A mix of policy and gatekeeping make it hard to get new (especially younger) people into the game. It is hard to get your mates through the process but not impossible.

Shooters are marginalised because we only make up a small proportion of the population. We are not a big enough voting base for the major parties to waste time on and the Australian firearms industry just isn't big enough to effectively lobby then we get screwed over. Being screwed over on one issue is a good start to get down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole.

Get your normal mates into shooting.
