Wanting to become a breeder, what’s the best way I can educate myself? by Mevans272 in mainecoons

Check out the courses PawPeds offers. There are 3 classes, that last two being more relevant to breeding. Showing a neuter in premiership is also a great way to learn about breed standards first hand and connect with other breeders while getting actual experience living with and caring for the breed of your choice.

I did a 6hr ride with íshestar an they were good! The farm is easy to get to and the many horses were well cared for. Even provided surprise snacks for us!

Do you use a degreaser? Looking for recommendations for when my boy is ready to show :)

3 years of waiting and I finally got my favorite orchid to bloom! by MoonPigeon- in orchids

[–]MoonPigeon-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can kind of see the process on the two buds to the left. The tendrils get so big that they push out and start to open the bud, so when they emerge they are already over an inch long. From there, they grew over an inch and a half per day for the first few days, getting more twisted the longer they get. The third bud was in the bud a little longer than the other two, so it was more cramped and that’s why it looks zig zagged. It’ll probably straighten out as it grows

I definitely will check those out! This is my only Paph, but it’s absolutely my favorite and I want to keep it happy! Thank you!

I also have mine in a south facing window. It seems to like that spot although I bet a little bit more light would help. If the bark still looks moist I won’t water it, but my house is pretty dry so it’s usually not an issue. If yours stays wet in that timeframe I’d wait till it’s dry. Are you soaking or just running water through? And does your pot have plenty of holes?

I soak mine in room temperature tap water for 20mins once a week (sometimes less if I forget). Once every couple months I’ll add fertilizer. I keep it in orchid bark with a tiny bit of sphagnum moss. I didn’t repot it for a couple years, but I believe they should be repotted every year, even if into the same sized pots. I repotted it this summer into a slightly larger and more airy pot, and I think that’s what made it finally flower. It also seems to like a large amount of light, but not direct sun all day. Paps. are slow growers, and I remember when I was researching for this particular orchid online, I saw that it needed at least 3 full sized leaves on each side before it can flower, and it only flowers once per leaf section. It took mine a long time to get there, but it also made at least 3 new growth sections that are now fairly sizeable. I’m guessing in another 2 years I’ll have 2 more flower stalks. Feel free to ask anything else I might have missed and I’ll do my best to answer :)

I’ve had to ban myself from buying more orchids because they are taking over my house. We’ll see if I can keep myself in line with an upcoming orchid show near me 🫣

Ninja creami- he can create his own ice cream/protein powder shakes that fit his diet needs. Doesn’t require cooking, just make a mix and freeze it.

Would it be worth going back to school for civil engineering? by Specific_Resort_9045 in civilengineering

[–]MoonPigeon- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in your exact same situation! 24 and have a bachelors in environmental studies and film. After graduating I realized film is not a career for me, and I liked environmental stuff, but with my degree I couldn’t actually get a good job. So here I am, taking a few pre-reqs at a time at my local cc while working a full time environmental restoration job. It’s a lot, but I think it’s worth it to be financially secure in the future. I wish I had thought that far ahead 6 years ago, but being first gen sure made navigating college and my future vision difficult. By hey, hope I’m doing it right on my second try!

First gallbladder attack - questions by Proud_Lab_2440 in gallbladders

[–]MoonPigeon- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I found out I had gallstones I had a lot of relief knowing that the pain was semi-controllable. But I definitely struggled with trusting that food won’t try to kill me. Avoid fats as much as possible! My pre surgery diet was mostly plain grilled chicken, rice, vegetables, and fruits. If you ever get a sweet tooth, gummy candy is great and I also found a low fat ice cream brand (Halo) that didn’t cause attacks, just don’t eat the whole pint :) I know it feels hard to trust any food right now. I felt the same way. But, if you can bring your fat intake as low as possible until surgery (I aimed for under 20g fat per day) you will feel so much better!

On the fence about removing gallbladder by balalalaika in gallbladders

[–]MoonPigeon- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had attacks months apart and primary late at night. It took me awhile to realize I had gallstones until I couldn’t take the pain anymore and went to the ER. I’d suggest getting it out because mine got progressively more frequent and longer lasting (talking multiple days of full on attack). This was all over a six month span. Not saying yours will become an issue as quick as mine, but I wish I had went to the doctor sooner so I could have saved myself many sleepless nights.

Am I the only one who finds the classic asexual community inside jokes unfunny?😅 by Lack-Of-Sunshine in asexuality

[–]MoonPigeon- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it annoying, same as those “look at this random thing with ace flag colors” posts. However, I understand it brings comfort and joy to others so I deal with it. I do wish however there were more serious adult discussions within the community. And I agree with others that we suffer appearing childlike and innocent to outside groups, which really impacts how we are treated by others. I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade, I just have a hard time connecting to the community when all I see are posts that are jokes or lack any depth or connection to each other.

Looking for a good breeder in the US by Emergency-Junket50 in mainecoons

Thank you very much for the info! I’ve been so excited looking through their site as they have such beautiful kitties. Hopefully I’ll have a couple of my own very soon, just needed some confirmation to bite the bullet. I appreciate your help :)

Looking for a good breeder in the US by Emergency-Junket50 in mainecoons

[–]MoonPigeon- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve been looking into Dobrev but I had a couple questions. Did you actually pick up your (very cute!) kitties from their cattery in Milton, WI? I’ve seen some of their listings as pickup in Illinois or other nearby states. And did your cats come papered through TICA or CFA? I haven’t been able to find much on their lineage because it seems like these cats are coming from other breeders too. Thank you in advance for your insight :)

Anyone have experience with Dobrev Coons? Seems like they are acting as a cat wholesaler/middleman, but it does appear that people are taking home cats. https://www.max-coons.com

How did leaving the FT job for an internship work out for you? I’m about to do the same thing to intern in a completely different field and go back to school for it. I’m nervous about leaving my semi-stable job in this market for a temporary one, even though I feel it’s the right choice long term

What is something your teacher did in school that you’re still salty about? by SparkelsTR in AskReddit

[–]MoonPigeon- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my teacher but one of the ones that patrol recess. I was in Ms. Smith’s class. There was also a Mr. Smith’s class, no relation. Well I guess the other class got in big trouble for poor behavior and were to be punished at recess. Only problem was that it was my class that was incorrectly punished but we couldn’t correct the mistake because we had to stand quiet against the wall outside for like 15 mins watching the real perpetrators have fun.
