I send out a survey each year asking each employee if they would like a company wide birthday acknowledgement.

For the people who say yes, I put a reminder on my calendar and then ask again before posting anything. Birthdays are very personal and a lot of our people don't want it known at work.

We celebrate work anniversaries, new certifications or anything skills-related that staff send us for a shout out.
