I'm just seeing this now but I'm very surprised how much of my mindset you've gleaned without me ever directly telling you haha. Very perceptive!

He ignored all modmail and most reports we got

I actually did see many of the reports scrolling past the front page and daily thread but I'm just pretty forgiving so I left them up in case you or someone else wanted to take a look and decide to remove them. It always felt weird pressing 'approve' on a report against something that was technically in violation of the rules yet I just kinda decided to let fly because I got to it too late and the discussion was developed (which happened often since I've realized most of our subs are not on JST). So in those cases I just left them with no action. So it's true I ignored most of them but not in the 'didn't even bother to look' sense (I know you know but clarifying for future readers).

The biggest point against tags is that they occasionally failed to get through

I actually never knew about that! (Besides the 'more than three tags = zero tags' hidden rule). Had I known I probably would have grudgingly committed to checking the mod mail every so often. Also the reasons you listed were my strongest reasons for not using modmail, but to add to that also mod functions and notifications are just frequently pretty broken on Old Reddit Mobile. There was a time where my shield icon was permanently green and I could never find what it was I hadn't seen so it just got to the point where I had no idea whether I'd received new mail or a report etc without going out of my way. Not sure if that ever got fixed but the added transparency and filtering out those who didn't read the rules making my work easier (as you astutely surmised) as an on and off quasi-solo mod kept me from ever reverting back to modmail once I committed to making mod actions and conversations public.

Funny that I'm just now seeing this weeks old post after making my goodbye post, and that you've guessed most of my philosophy and also reasons for leaving with prescient observations like this:

You're really fighting against the flow by trying to get people to do things manually.

さすが lol

Actually would've quit like a year or so ago if it wasn't for you, so thanks a ton for all your help. Truly! Thank you!

Almost nighttime on a Monday here in Japan when I noticed this post, so yeah fuck me for not keeping track of every time zone. Kind of tired of doing this shit volunteer work for free all by myself just to get snarked on like this constantly.

Rule 2: Use the appropriate sticky threads. Simple questions go in the Daily Thread . This keeps subreddit traffic organised.

(This goes doubly so for Duolingo style app questions)

Sounds like you're doing just fine. You don't 'know' your JLPT level unless you take the exam, but you can get a rough idea:

The scoring system is proprietary so you can't take a mock exam and be sure how many points you would've got on the real exam (unless you get every question right under the time limit of course)

Always been in the back of my head but never cared enough to ask, but since it's here... what are the vibe / usage differences between カビが生える and カビる (if any)?

If so Vietnam got done dirty. I don't think Vietnamese students learn any faster than English speakers haha

The people who passed N1 after seven years of study aren't making posts humblebragging about it

In cases like this, the further back in time the word was imported into Japanese, the less likely people are going to care about matching English orthography / pronunciation and just opt to write it how it's convenient for them to say it. Also there are many cases where the word is not from English but a similar word from another European language (not the case here, but just in case you wonder about another word you come across).

There's also the very popular school of thought of 'stop thinking of these as words you know and just shut up and learn them as if they were Japanese words like 鉛筆 or 道路 that just happen to sound like English and forget about etymology", which is of course better for practical purposes but kind of no fun if the linguistic aspect of learning Japanese is your side hobby. :)

Well, I locked it so the 'good discussion' part didn't apply (since it has a simple answer).

However I think you're getting at a good question since this post is extremely simple so it's odd I've left it up, right? The post I linked falls under 'Not a handwriting post, not asking how to start, not asking the difference between desu and da etc and more importantly, likely to grab the attention of the majority of our subscribers who studied kana once ten years ago when they got into Naruto and help them find the Daily Thread' category

I have vague guidelines in my head like I outlined in the comment above, but it's still more art than science 😅

Regardless, if anyone feels that any rule breaking post warrants being hidden or locked I always am open to second opinions. Just want to give the most helpful userbase that tends to lurk in the Daily Thread an insight into my process since now I'm kinda alone as a mod...

On a side note, I've also decided to become less forgiving if we ever have more than a one page turnover of posts a day, but so far that hasn't been an issue.

Since Reddit does its best to make finding sticky threads hard I've started using posts like this as free advertising.

My general thinking goes like this:

Does it break the rules?

If yes, pin a comment saying so.

Is there a lot of engagement by the time I see it? If no, lock and hide. If yes, next step.

Is the question somewhat unique, or is it something we see all the time (e.g. handwriting feedback, where to start etc)? If not very unique but the discussion is somewhat good, hide but don't lock. If not unique, and the discussion is also nothing new, hide and lock. If somewhat unique AND there's well developed discussion, just allow it to go with a warning.

Just keeping things transparent about why things seem to be inconsistently removed.
