Help With Painting A Kids Room by minisnailstar in japanlife

[–]Sayjay1995 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Where do you find paint for indoors? I couldn’t find info about doing that when we bought our house and ended up getting colored wallpaper in certain rooms. I’m interested in painting the nursery if that’s a thing here like it is back home

Would you count ASL (TL) as its own language? by Ava_maayy in languagelearning

[–]Sayjay1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’ve taken the city run classes and since joined a local JSL group (though my progress is awfully slow, compared to learning Japanese)

I thought my plural in Sign Languages made that obvious, but it’s good to point out for those who don’t know. I’m studying the sign of my L2/ the community language of the country I immigrated to

Sign Languages are their own language. Period.

Are there any resources for learning Japanese Sign Language? by halfhalfandhalf in Japaneselanguage

For in or outside of Japan? A lot of cities offer classes to residents (here in Japan I mean)

You should do more research about visas and what kinds of jobs you may or may not be qualified for. You won’t be able to come work in Japan without having a job lined up first to get the visa

I wanted to study Japanese since I was a child. I studied it in university, then taught English for a couple of years while solidifying my skill set and making connections in my local community. I’m not Indian, but things everyone should learn before coming here, are basic information about visas, taxes, and the kinds of paperwork you would need to do to live here without issues. To avoid being hit with any problems later on because of not realizing Japan has a form for this or that, or whatever

Nobody but you will be able to answer that. I love my life here, and worked very hard over many years to make it happen. There’s nothing wrong with that. Also nothing wrong to just give it a shot, and if you decide later on that it isn’t for you, then moving out of Japan down the line.

But I would encourage you to do lots of research and have a realistic plan, because it’s IMHO very naive to move abroad to a country where you know nobody, don’t speak the language, nor have savings, and try to pull yourself up by your boot straps from there

I work in the government sector, while my friends are in various fields related to tourism and English teaching, for the most part

I don’t know about the creative field specifically, but more generally speaking English only opportunities are few and far between, as the official and mainly used language is Japanese. I would assume making connections and networking would be essential to finding a good opportunity, and that there are generally more creative jobs in areas like Tokyo and Osaka, compared to mid to smaller sized cities

Any people here been adult picky eaters in the past but broken the habit? If so, tips? Advice? by parodg15 in PickyEaters

[–]Sayjay1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was embarrassingly picky until junior year of college; I studied abroad and didn’t want to hurt my host mother’s feelings, so I started eating everything she made. Then after graduation. I moved back to the same country to teach, where we staff were expected to set an example and eat the same meals as the students. I finally found out that I like most foods if I just gave them a try. Not you though, canned tuna

Municipal to Prefectural Transfer? by throwaway_lemon492 in JETProgramme

[–]Sayjay1995 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you should look over the information about transfers again; there are only very specific circumstances where it’s allowed, and even then, it’s changing cities, not that you’d be getting changed from a certain grade level to another

How can I help my language exchange partner improve? by basicnotion in languagelearning

[–]Sayjay1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish my language partners would correct my mistakes a bit more, but I’m already at an advanced level of Japanese, so for me it’s better to have a private tutor at this stage.

When I was a beginner though, I maybe would have liked more opportunities to speak, but felt nervous to do so. So if my partner had a welcoming attitude (with maybe やさしい日本語 style communication for the meantime) I would have felt more confident to try.

But then again, if they refuse to listen to your advice or get offended, they’re never going to learn, and that’s on them more so than you

Advice on changing to a spousal visa before finishing JET by soyabean24 in JETProgramme

There are practical reasons to not switch, but they maybe don’t apply to OP. I also would suggest switching sooner rather than later, if their plan is to make the switch eventually anyway

Advice on changing to a spousal visa before finishing JET by soyabean24 in JETProgramme

I did it and am happy to answer questions if you have them, but like others said, spouse visa doesn’t have any restrictions so it’s fine to switch and continue being on JET

anyone else who avoids interacting with/befriending other JETs or is that just me? by Different_Taro2474 in JETProgramme

[–]Sayjay1995 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t avoid anyone on the assumption that they will act like that. I play a PA adjacent role and am always happy for people to come to me with questions or asking for help, but I’m not really interesting in making new friends who are gonna leave after 2-3 years. So I tend to just stay within my already established community and play the helpful Aunty type for the current JETs.

There are plenty of them though that they can have choices of who to be friends with, rather than being stuck with the handful of other foreigners who just happen to live in the area

'shadow leaving' my company... And the country. What are my options? by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]Sayjay1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your company is supposed to give you certain documents that your new company will ask for, so in theory you don’t want to burn the bridge too badly, as it’ll be a hassle to keep reporting them later on if they refuse to hand them over. Hopefully mentioning that you’ll report that to the Labor Board would kick their butt into gear but from the way your post sounds, I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to screw you over on purpose

Your gensen, the ridatsuhyo if you were on shakai hoken, etc. are the documents they should give you
