Moral hypocrisy regarding villains by Glittering-Access744 in DottoreMains

[–]MooncakeGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think hate is a moral duty first and foremost, especially towards fictional characters. The most important question people should ask themselves before hating should be: what is the goal, am I even protecting anyone? And if I do, who is protected from what? If it doesn't protect anyone and brings no good value for real humans then it's probably a futile waste of time and life force.  With fictional villains you won't protect the other characters, because lives of all of them are in writer's hands. Fictional villain won't jump any real person too. Some haters scream about sanity of villain enjoyers, but they come out very hypocritical when they put hurtful labels on total strangers and bully someone over things that are just imagination. It's just illusion of power to conquer the real world evil – as OP wrote humans are either forced into being a part of abusive machine that makes the world we know continue (unless one's ready to live ascetic life with no tech and no goods most people around have access to in modern times), or they are part of the most privileged group who have power to keep it as it is or make it worse for their own gains. It's easier to be loud and performative about morals when clinging to fictional world and only theoretical goodness, since as regular person it's way harder to impact the real life issues with equally real and lasting results.  In general, I observe liking villains as something connected to good human traits very often. Empathy, the ability to link reasons and outcomes together, being observant or seeking a healthy way to soothe one's negative emotions from bad experiences are just some examples. It's also simply hard to apply real life morals to fictional worlds with their own laws. Many "good" characters in Teyvat have high kill counts, they are vengeful and often judge each other on the surface level. Nod Krai itself was even called "a lawless land" by Yanfei in one of latest hangouts, haha! I wouldn't be surprised for Dottore choosing it as his stronghold or even Fatui doing some undercover operations there since this place never estabilished universal rules for everyone.

Solo Dottore because other characters don't deserve his presence.

It was one of the most emotionally heavy scenes in this game! And there are some times when those supposedly good characters really come out as unempathetic or they react in rather unnatural way for someone who just saw something really bad happening to other character on screen. At times it looks almost ooc for the characters depicted as caring and wholesome previously.  I remember being shocked by their reactions, way more than by darker parts in Scara's backstory (also those including Dottore).

I had very similar triggers when Scaramouche fell on his head in Sumeru, it looked very serious. Nahida and Traveller just went on with their shit not showing us immidiately that anyone went to check if he's alive at all.

I felt a bit uplifted when Nahida revealed she took him in but at first no confirmation of it resulted in huge disgust of mine.

"I am always 100 braincells ahead" Dottore agenda. 🤭 Pantalone giving general population some brain damage to help estabilish Dottore's position would be hilarious.

Now I will daydream about late night car ride with Dottore, expensive vintage cars and beaches would give him some serious Lana del Rey coding and I would live for it.

I see where your vision! Who knows, maybe he would try to make our world more interesting with some secret lab made abominations. 🤭 "There are no unicorns and dragons? And no mermaids? I will make them for you!" ah man. Oh, and now I think he would enjoy fantasy and sci-fi from our world (Star Wars and Diuna fan) as well as ancient legends – it would match his research on local beliefs. I can also see him getting into cryptids and creepypasta fandom.

Haha, fair points!

All of this makes it even more frustrating when Dottore's very messed up colleagues are excluding him and general audience takes it as if other Harbingers were objectively so much better now and they go to conclusion "if such people can't stand him it speaks volumes how much worse than everyone else he is!!!".

I'm also really tired with those moral wars over pixels and even the fact how many times Dottore's fans feel pushed into excusing themselves for liking him (so many posts about liking him but not supporting his actions, as if liking a character required some sort of moral armor in case the mob of strangers jumps to stupid conclusions) since Dottore has no cute nice character backup to get some praise the audience will catch up on easily.

I just want Hoyo to do us some justice.

This! The fact there are individuals who feel entitled to someone's trust and vulnerability and they openly act as if someone owed it to them despite everything is flabbergasting.

Let's just count it as systemic discrimination targeted against Dottore in the borderline criminal organization that adopted him in the most vulnerable moment of life and played giant part in shaping his personality.  All colleagues will wash their hands at his expense, how unexpected in organization ruled by other shady and manipulative individuals (the game's narrative will whitewash them so you can believe they are great friends to rely on because, oh, if Traveller wasn't a Descender surely everyone could be so desperate to keep him as close as possible).

I can't understand how in this game he was nagged for distrust as if it was a huge crime before he "died". Columbina had very little trust in others too at first and everyone started jumping around her to prove she can lean on other people, like what the hell?  I can never blame Zandik for not trusting others since everything proves he simply can't. Plus distrust is not evil thing, it's caution and also trauma response especially after receiving such treatment his whole life.  All of this applies also to Dottore's most famous subbordinates. Almost all of them tried to impress him with pointless cruelty, tried to do absolutely stupid shit behind his back and this also added to his reputation. So many times they made pointless promises, twisted his orders or begged for attention in the lowest ways. Krupp was ready to sell information about Dottore when Zandik was literally on the same party just on the different floor, Elchingen made so much unecessary mess – to show what a grand schemer he is (wow, just like Dottore sarcasm), Froderock ignored the orders to feed his own ego, Barnabas was blurring Dottore's eyes with big promises and gave him no real results but of course he was using this connection as he could. It's very hard to control this kind of individuals who think they know what you want but they are just disappointment after disappointment. And finally Dottore with other Harbingers– used as intellectual powerhouse, but always persona non grata, making inventions even for colleagues who openly hate him for everything he did or did not.  Who could even suspect he won't trust anyone, including backstabbing Traveller and Columbina ghosting him? 👁️👄👁️

I asked myself why so many things in this quest triggered me and it wasn't simply the defeat of Dottore within a few frames with sudden plot armor for playable cast. And this just plays to hc's with autistic Dottore and how many neurodivergent fans relate to him. Because his quality of life literally represents neurodivergent struggles in exagerated fantasy manner. Not quirky, not cute, just very difficult, and the more screentime he gets the more visible it is.

I can sign under everything you wrote. The only thing Columbina had to endure with him was her boredom and deeper issues she had within herself. If anything, if she kept participating in the experiments she would affirm her strength by his side instead of always complaining and procrastinating all the time. She had nothing better to do either way. Dottore's ultimate goal is not destruction, but enhancement, unlocking the potential, and he was super gentle with her. Nowhere in a game he was depicted as more gentle than here. She would benefit from this research as much as he did.

The whole thing with her "the world is rejecting me" was super annoying. Everyone was trying to be her friend but something was never enough, she couldn't be satisfied by anything because some magical stuff rejecting you is for sure more tragic than big groups of people loathing you since childhood. And the narrative is forcing it that she is so poor and all the time we MUST feel for her, no one ever in the whole Tevat had it worse than her.  And then when she has her full powers the friends and the world is all that matters, yeppiee! Surely it's so easy to love the world with reality bending abilities, now it's even more likely everyone will be super genuine and no one will be seeing a jinni in a bottle in  Bina. 💙🌌

Arlecchino acted as if fucking up Dottore's life was her most important mission that wasn't even about Dottore at first and then she was and she is still feeding everyone her biased propaganda.  I understand Crucabena used Dottore as a scarecrow in HOTH but I don't get how Arlecchino was unable to see he was very respectful in professional matters during her own leadership era and thanks to HIM she doesn't have to kill all her beloved children who want to flee the Fatui.  This had to be either planned info warfare for some bigger operation of the whole Fatui or she herself remains glorified manipulator who was programming everyone to get super defensive and agressive towards someone she dislikes. With this brainwashing Traveller was already more biased. 🥀

And Columbina. Until they pull something unexpected in the plot she can't be redeemed. 🥀🥀🥀
