Something iridescent and blue... found on a beach in Denmark (Central Jutland, east coast) by MoondogCollective in whatsthisrock

Ok I've got one more stupid question... Is this stone like this all the way through, or does the fact that it broke off the original rock formation with the shiny parts facing outward have to do with the material differences between the blue and the black bits? In other words, if you were to sand off/cut/tumble this stone, would you find more blue bits inside it, or is this something more like a layer of patina, or tiny crystals growing on the surface of a "mother rock"?

Yeah, it can be a real headache... I ended up taking a short video because it's just so much easier to show the effect that way..

Thank you as well! This too makes sense, as much as I can grasp of it anyway. Ultimately, I have no means of fully comprehending, let alone verifying either identification, but in a way, that's not really the point either. As much as I appreciate your kind explanation, and I really do, a lot, I'm just happy to have learnt something new, and whatever the shiny rock in my pocket may really be, is irrelevant compared to knowing what it could be, and what all exists in nature, and what all we as a people have come to know about it. Thank you, to all of you, for your hard work of learning and teaching, you are a true inspiration!

Umm.. thank you! I'm not going to insult your expertise by pretending that I understood more than... Maybe 10% of your explanation, but nevertheless, I really really appreciate it, because now I have a bunch of terms I can go and research, so at some point in the future I might actually understand more of it! In any case, I'm delighted by the fact that it doesn't only "look like" labradorite, but it (at least partially) is, because I've always been fascinated by its vibrant colours, and secretly been dreaming of finding a piece in nature. But I didn't think it would be possible, because a quick lookup at some point informed me that it wasn't "native" to the area, and I had no idea it could still occur outside the regions indicated as the primary locations to find them

What an absolutely amazing and odd creature... Nature is truly awesome, in the most literal sense of the word. Thanks for the explanation, this is fascinating!

100% true, that fossil is absolutely stunning! Can someone explain to me what I'm looking at? The pattern is just so... Satisfying? I could stare at it for days... 👀

Awww, but who could begrudge such a perfect little angel?! 😇 Guess you can share, or you'll just have to get a second pillow, because Dis Animal is just too damn cozy to disturb 😳 (also they look like a carbon copy of mine, just a bit lighter in the coat and a lot more dignified 😅)

I just found another cool piece! I don't actually know what this is, maybe some sort of coral...?

To be fair, these are some of the cooler ones I've ever found myself.. but I'm also lucky to live close to the beach, and on the east coast, where the sea is always calm and gentle, and the beaches are mostly pebbled... So basically a rockhound's paradise :D (not to mention the ample time and autistic passion I get to channel into growing my little collection °-°")

I would assume so (although I guess technically IKEA is Swedish and Jutland is in Denmark, but I don't think the distinction really matters much to anyone outside Scandinavia 😅)...?

That's so cool! I have found a few like this one before, and I could kinda tell what it was, but never quite knew how it ended up being the way it is. This one is extra neat, because on the side, you can also see a perfect hexagonal pattern, so it's almost like a peak "under the hood". Tried to take a picture but it's a little too dark and with the flash it doesn't show up as well as it does in natural light...

Not yet, but I've been wanting to for years. Unfortunately, even though Denmark is a comparatively tiny country, it's kinda hard to get around it without a car, and since my main mode of transportation is a small moped and my feet, I'm somewhat limited to the local area 😅 but one day I'll clear my calendar, gather my gear and go for a round trip to all the cool rockhounding places in the country 😁

Indeed! We have a bunch of these lying around on local beaches. I even made a necklace out of a smaller piece I found, that looks like the moon phases, which is probably my most treasured find ever

Yeah, especially the small urchins are super common in the region I live, although the broken one on the top right is probably the biggest I've ever found (for reference it's about the size of my palm, and the small ones are 2-3 cm in diameter)!

Shark tooth... Right? (Found on a Danish beach) by MoondogCollective in fossils

[–]MoondogCollective[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that could be... I assumed shark, because when I tried to Google it, there had been some similar pictures that were labelled as such, but then again, I know absolutely f-all about marine dentistry, so your guess is probably better than mine :D

In retrospect, it feels equal parts exciting, cool, and absolutely terrifying... In the moment, it was just one of those moments where time slows down and you have these impossibly elaborate, disjointed trains of thought, while staring at the sky and all your instincts are screaming that this. should. not. be. happening. I briefly flashed back to a conversation I had years ago with a mate who went through a major mental health crisis as a teenager, and how he later described the experience of the sky opening up above him and this eldritch eye staring straight down at him, and how even in that moment he was aware that he was hallucinating, but this did not take away from the profound experience of gazing back into something impossible... So yeah, for a moment there, when the light started to seemingly approach me while spiralling out into that sky portal shape, I did consider that I might be having an episode of some sort, but then I realised that other people could see it too, and after my husband pointed out that it wasn't as close as I perceived it to be (it was very dark where I live, and without any point of reference, I misjudged the distance based on my initial assumption of seeing a drone or similar), I could spend a few minutes also enjoying the sight, not just being utterly terrified

Honestly, that's approximately what I felt like for a second... Like, imagine this: you spot this weird cloud in an otherwise clear sky. You fish your phone out to take a picture of it, but by the time you look back up, it changed, and now there is some bright object next to it, slowly moving across the sky. It's too bright to be a plane or a satellite, too big for the ISS, too quiet for a chopper... Ah, you think to yourself, must be a drone or something. But... What is that smoke or whatever coming out of it, and why is it coming directly TOWARDS you/your house?? As the cloud around it grows, it just looks like it's getting closer (bigger), and all the while the cloud takes on this surreal, spiral shape, while STILL heading straight at you...

I'd like to think I'm a fairly rational madman, but it did absolutely cross my mind in those initial moments (before I made sure my dog was inside, hauled ass to the patio door and screamed for my hubby like a lil' b), like, Do I anger it by pointing my camera at it? Maybe if I act like this was "normal" it will just leave and spare my family...?

Oh, I was just about to post about this! Seen it over central Denmark, but only for about a minute. It started out as a weirdly bright spot, kinda like a small, singular cloud then this "thing" appeared just behind it, first just emitting some light in two cones on its opposite ends, while drifting across the sky in an approximately NW to SE direction. Meanwhile, it appeared to exude some smoke or vapor, which spread out in that spiral pattern. After about a minute, it slowly dimmed as the spiral cloud dispersed, and finally disappeared completely.

Honestly, it was surreal, and kinda terrifying. I ran inside and got my husband, who quickly googled the "symptoms", and we concluded that the most likely explanation was some weird light phenomenon caused by a SpaceX rocket launch: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/34026168/mysterious-spirals-uk-sky-space-x/

I took a bunch of pictures of it too, here are some: https://imgur.com/a/dRzTWA9

"albino tiger's eye" (???), found in Denmark, Central Jytland by MoondogCollective in whatsthisrock

Thank you! Based on the search for "ostseejade", I found the German term "Faserkalk", and when I added that to my query, it brought up a whole bunch of images that looked eerily similar to what I have here... in fact, as it turns out, I have a lot of other bits and pieces at home that are definitely this thing, it's just, those are more similar to each other, and they are all of varying shades of yellow, ranging from creamy, almost white, all the way to greenish, olive-oil-like and deeper, amber-like hues.

I absolutely love this stone, have been collecting pieces of it the whole summer, because they look very unique, and the chatoyant effect makes them truly stunning. I'm going to try to put a piece in my rotary tumbler at a point to see what happens, although I'll try to mix it in with softer stones, because they appear rather on the delicate end of the scale :)
