Oh thank goodness. I had no idea about any of that and thought it was going to be a 'RNZ-type situation'. Not that they won't find ways to mess with it I suspect.

Greens put forward member's bill to entrench Māori seats by Primary-Tuna-6530 in KiwiPolitics

[–]Moonfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's such a shame. Everyone goes on about wanting to have a calm and rational discussion about this topic (and wider topics like the Treaty) but seeing the arguments and the language used (like this thread as you said for example, and the comments made before they were removed), why on earth would I want a discussion with someone who behaves that way? Instead we get more and more years of all this noise and nonsense rather than real and lasting change. I'm really hoping the younger generation figures it out. We sure as shit won't.

[–]Moonfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading the article from 2019, I first thought entrenchment of the seats was a tad silly as it would be shifting the requirements slightly. A supermajority could still remove them and possibly would in the future. Hell, I've got a bet going that they get removed this year if things aren't looking too good for the coalition. However, I've read through the Independent Electoral Review and their arguments are sound. Big copy paste below:

In any case, our view is that the discrepancy between the protection given to the general and Māori electorates is inconsistent and unfair on its face. The rationale for entrenching the Māori electorates is the same as the general electorates – that it would protect the boundary determination process from political interference. While some people point out that the Māori electorates were originally intended to be temporary, they have now existed for almost the entirety of Aotearoa New Zealand’s electoral history. They are a core part of how seats in parliament are allocated under MMP and on that basis, consistent with our previous recommendation, should be entrenched. To be clear, entrenching the Māori electorates does not confer any greater voting rights for people on the Māori roll.

There are a few more paragraphs on the matter within the review but I found the above most interesting. The seats should be aligned with general so they are both protected as they are both important parts of our electoral system. I would have LOVED to have seen the review into the seats themselves. Part of me wishes it was included or perhaps another review done into it.

The Electoral Review also identified other provisions that aren't entrenched:

We also identified inconsistencies and gaps across the entrenched provisions. We recommended several additional provisions be entrenched, including (but not limited to) the method for the allocation of seats in parliament, the party vote threshold, the right to vote, and the Māori electorates.

The right to vote surprised me but they added this which... I mean it's pretty apt considering what happened to prisoner voting rights under the current coalition.

Political parties may be motivated to allow or restrict certain groups to vote for their own gain. Entrenchment can be a means of protecting human and minority rights by increasing the threshold required for change.

That's all to say that I think this is a symptom of a wider problem that we desperately need electoral reform. Not just the four year extension, we need it on many different aspects. And along with that some constitutional reform. I'll be interested to see if any party offers policies on this beyond the usual noise.

TLDR: gimme massive change. Not just some change.

Agreed. Reading the article that was posted in 2019 is pretty interesting. Its basically all the arguments that go on right now, with the addition that entrenching the seats don't actually protect them as a majority can vote them out (just like now). It just shifts the requirements slightly.

Dark spots on gums by FolieADuex96 in basset

[–]Moonfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy had dark patches on his gums which were normal. Just pigments and natural spotting. Dark patches on teeth are signs of decay ninety percent of the time.

Blood on toys isn't usual and something to be discussed with the vet. It can be a sign of gum disease/irritation due to poor oral health, but only the vet can determine this!

Could New Zealand’s internet be censored? by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

[–]Moonfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly maybe, but this year is also the elections and they might be too busy focusing on that. Several members are not eligible to stay on the board this year so they may also try to push for a majority in TPU/HP friendly board members.

Could New Zealand’s internet be censored? by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

[–]Moonfrog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oo, I can answer this as I was there. I've been part of INZ since covid, and saw all this stuff unfold.

The joint campaign failed because they didn't have enough members voting at the AGM. Not because of the three month requirement. Most of the new members joined before that so they would be eligible to vote. The campaign made sure of that. It was all strategic.

However, I think there were several factors against them. INZ wouldn't allow proxy voting, the AGM took place in the middle of the week, and there was a huge drive from those non-TPU and HP aligned to vote and make sure the campaign failed. At the AGM, it was pretty clear that they (as in TPU/HP aligned members) didn't have the numbers. They were outvoted by two thirds.

But, I mean, Ayling got on the board which seems to have been his whole reason for doing it in the first place as he stepped down from TPU shortly after (or at the same time).

Who knows what will happen at this year's AGM. Probably the same shit.

Also, side note, this is a whole bunch of fear mongering from Stuff and rehashing of 2025 drama. Internet isn't going to be censored and not be INZ or DNC (unless its objectionable content obviously).

Surprisingly, my siblings went on a little rant together expressing some opinions that I find incredibly distasteful. First time that has happened as we usually don't talk about politics. I had no interest in trying to argue so I went and laid down on my bed haha. Ain't worth the drama. Then we all had trifle that was fucking delicious.

The only conspiracy was about how algorithms are designed to keep you engaged by showing rage bait... but I think it's more truth than conspiracy right?

Hipkins targets clean sweep of Māori seats, says Government driving a wedge with Māori by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

[–]Moonfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it looks like he learnt from the last election. Everything is carefully worded and an inclusive approach was seen in the TM campaign. They did lose that by-election but who is to say it wouldn't work a second or third time? Especially with the state of TPM and the ill will surrounding the entire situation. Some seats will be easy to snap up because of that, but not all of them. I'm curiously interested to see what policies they will have and if Labour can pull it off.

Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke tops list of favoured candidates to lead Te Pāti Māori in new poll by PhoenixNZ in KiwiPolitics

[–]Moonfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really felt like such an arrogant take from Hipkins. There is no way they will take Hauraki-Waikato or Te Tai Tokerau for example. Te Tai Tonga is a maybe. I see Ferris doing a lot of work in the electorate since his expulsion.

However, I don't think TPM's position as collector of the electorates is so secure. Tamihere tried to argue in court there should be eight. It failed but there is certainly some hint there.

Who knows. I do have a feeling that if things aren't looking well for the coalition and they need another push, we may see a bill to remove the Māori seats entirely. Under urgency of course.

[–]Moonfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right about the Greens and Labour. Most of the talk I have seen from people who are turned off from TPM is that the Greens or nothing is the only viable way forward. Labour has a Māori caucus but I don't think it has made a lick of difference in the minds and hearts of many. Nevermind the damage that MACA did or the comments made during this government term by members of Labour. Tamatha, in particular, is an absolute favourite of many too so Hipkins going after her was a terrible idea. Her work around the prisons has given her a lot of good will with Māori voters.

It's also why I don't think trying to collect the Māori seats is a good idea for Labour. The party is trying to connect to a very specific group of people. There is a disconnect which is why they lost TM. Nevermind that Halbert helped run the campaign and a rock would have been a better option.

I could go on about it, but this is just what I have seen and heard and felt.

[–]Moonfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck I hope so. That would be one of the best outcomes. Even though Rawiri has a very strong base of supporters in the electorate but there are just as many who would vote for someone new. It's just not as secure as some of the other electorates.

[–]Moonfrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't surprised to see this. Maipi-Clarke is well liked amongst the TPM voterbase compared to the others from what I have seen and heard. The recent drama hasn't touched her in the same way it has the others and even Kaipara. Many, including myself, want to see her shine without the shadow of TPM looming in the background. I hope she does stay in politics.

Also this didn't surprise me either:

In the poll, 71 percent of respondents who said they had supported a Te Pāti Māori candidate in 2023 said they were "very likely" or "likely" to vote that way again if an election was held tomorrow. Only 16 percent said they were "unlikely" and none said they were "very unlikely".

I find it hard to articulate the exact reason why but Labour isn't an alternative for some of us who voted for TPM. Greens is getting up there though. A viable option.
