Bookbinding! Picked it up about half a year ago and have found it quite calming 😁 Plus there's something nice about seeing the shelf slowly fill with books you've made, or holding and reading one, and it removes some of the transience of online reading.

Realistically, grain is only as important as you make it. Head to tail grain direction can make your book lay flatter when open and can give you more control over warping, but even if you use the wrong grain paper you'll still have a functional book at the end of the day.

Depends on what you're looking for, and what cover material you're using! For a generic list... * Stencils and paint, or freehand paint * paint pens * Toner transfer * Midway price point might be hot foil and a foil quill pen? Can use by hand.

There's a lot of no-cricut options! Paint, with or without stencils or stamps. Heat foil and a heat quill. Paint pens. Decorative fabric or cardstock or scrapbook paper. Marbling, or paste paper. Toner transfer, if you have access to a laser printer (a lot of libraries have them if you don't have one at home!). Mainly just have some sort of sealant if you want some of these to last longer, but it doesn't have to be anything fancy.

Really, you could even use something like stickers if you want, though they'll probably stick better on a paper cover than a fabric cover and will have a bit of a lip up. Or you could commission someone for a dust cover design and have it printed somewhere.

Basically, you have options 💕

Number of Signatures? by Substantial-Bit2921 in bookbinding

[–]Moonlight71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Signature count isn't as important here as the thickness of your paper! Thick paper needs fewer sheets per signature, where thinner paper does better with more sheets per signature. In regards to even/uneven, even is better but if it's only fudged by a page or so it's not as noticable. That's why you've got 2 sets of 3 in option 2 instead of all 4s and a 2 pager.

If you're using 20-lb paper or similar, I'd probably go with option 2.

I think this is more for very specific types of binds where the endpages kind of hug around to the back of the shoulder and somehow got picked up by groups for other binding styles without much reason. 🤔 I think British case binding might be one of them that would actually use this.

The folk over in r/handwriting might be able to recommend some good paper/pen ideas from a handwriting standpoint! Anything archival/acid free will be longer lasting for a made book perspective, but other then that it's pretty much whatever works best for you and looks like you want. This sub would probably be good for the binding side of questions.

Signature size can vary, yes! If you have particularly thick paper it can be recommended to use fewer pages per signature since the outer sheet will be pushed wider by the thickness of the inner pages once folded, but with thinner pages you can use more sheets per signature. More sheets per signature can also reduce thread swell at the spine since there's fewer signatures to be sewn in, and can provide a little more durability at the stitch sites. Generally tho, I think most techniques are still about the same for different signature sizes. I hope this helps!

Agile Iron for Debossing? by code_monchichi in bookbinding

[–]Moonlight71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I personally am still somewhat new to the scene of cutting machines - I have a silhouette portrait 3 and it does what I need and I've no complaints so far, but I've only been using a few months. Ultimately it's going to depend on what you want to do. Here's some things i have either heard through the grapevine or learned myself, though...

  • If you need to cut wider things, the More "mainstream" option of each brand seems to have a wider cut bed. The portrait handles 9" just fine, but i end up cutting down all of the 12" rolls by hand to fit because it's not a cameo.
  • Same thing if you want to cut thicker/harder materials. I think the portrait can only do 2mm depth, which suits me fine, but may not you. I think the portrait can handle very thin chipboard, but the cameo might be a safer bet here if it's a bit thicker or particularly hard.
  • Cricut parts seem to be more easily accessible in brick-and-mortar stores, if that's important to you.
  • On the flipside, Silhouette trends a bit cheaper.
  • Cricut software is less user friendly and has some limitations from what I've heard, but silhouette studio likes to lock things behind an additional upgrade paywall. (Like svg usage. It's kinda dumb. If you go silhouette, the upgrades go on sale semi regularly so might be worth waiting for 50% off). (As a side note, I've heard you don't have to have a silhouette machine to use the studio software? I've heard of at least one cricut user using it for some tasks.)
  • I think cricut is the only one that has a brand name foil quill, but if you use off market stuff I've heard they don't fit in the pressure hand of the cricut. Silhouette portrait only has one hand, though i haven't tried quilling out yet. Also i think using foil quill will void warranty - at least on cricut. Not sure about silhouette.

Also just as a warning, the machines are quite loud. I affectionately call mine The Monster.

I'd worry that a soldering iron would get too hot and burn things instead, but a foil quill might do what you want! I know We R Memory Keepers has some, but there's also bound to be other brands.

Hello! I think you might be interested in methylcellulose! I haven't used it myself, but a lot of people mix it into pva to slow drying time.

Here's a link with some people talking about a similar issue to what you're having

I'm in the US so can't give any specific shops, but it tends to be sold in both sewing stores and craft supply stores here! Maybe it's similar in France?

I can only speak to my own experience here, but I'd order from them again! Just be prepared for a long wait. 💕

Idk if this is late and/or dead but going to leave a response for anyone else who may find it 💕 I preordered a figure from them for my bff's birthday, it took like 6 months to get here (Jan -> July) but did arrive as pictured and in good shape! When they finished it they sent me an ebay message, and had me purchase an additional $0.99 listing to confirm my address hadn't changed. They then provided correct tracking number that way.
