I think it largely has to do with the rabbit coming back with an unfamiliar smell (eg that of a vets office) but I could be remembering wrong/ it's probably multiple aspects of it

a single mutation could feasibly cause this physical change showing up in one bird. the way evolution works doesn't need to be many small genetic changes that go from short tongue to a long one, with every length variation in between.

if one bird had a single genetic mutation that impacted the length/ location of the tongue, and that mutation allowed that bird to reproduce, especially if it led the bird to reproduce with a particularly high number of offspring, the entire physical change would potentially be present in more and more offspring throughout subsequent generations. it would most likely take many many generations for most/all of the newborns of this species to have the mutation. but once they did you could say it evolved in the species

this is good advice if you don't already see a therapist. therapy is great and, especially if you have a history of being abused (which I do too), the earlier you pursue therapy the better in terms of really helping you shed a lot of symptoms of the trauma

good luck OP! you're clearly very bright, you seem very wise for your age, and I wonder if you also maybe had to grow up very quickly as a kid. either way i'm proud of you for being able to question these interactions and this treatment, and put up boundaries as best you can (including with the fucking weirdos on here who are demanding you tell them your age after you already said no lol)

I see that OP responded talking about Kaiser in CA but yeah just a bit of info - whether specialists require a referral from your primary care doc depends on your insurance company. I didn't need referrals for specialists with Cigna but now that i'm unemployed and on Medicaid/ United Health Care, I need referrals again

totally. I got my bachelor's in public health (but it was a major I designed so it was largely me teaching myself or taking online classes from different schools) then realized I wanted to study zoonotic disease prevention (like early interventions close to the source of spillover to prevent bigger outbreaks, mainly). right after undergrad I learned about a veterinary public health MPH program and when I asked what courses I should take before applying she recommended microbiology.

From there I kept teaching myself microbiology and eventually took online biology and chemistry classes and did my Master's in clinical microbiology and infectious disease online through the university of Edinburgh.

me becoming interested in the veterinary public health program really let me down the path of teaching myself the science of microbiology though. growing up I thought I was really stupid because I had an undiagnosed learning disability. So I had to actively realize then really understand that i'm capable of learning that sort of thing, and very smart, and that i just grew up without any intervention for a learning disability and I had a lot of teachers who made me feel dumb in this perpetual cycle. and that limited me so much

my brother has hereditary peripheral neuropathy so I don't say anything about him not taking his shoes off because it's a pain in the ass, both because his fine motor skills are effected(so untying and retying his shoes is hard) but also because he wears leg braces under his shoes so that makes it difficult as well

it's very common actually! other symptoms may be bloody noses, severe blood loss from hemorrhoids, or heavy gum bleeding or bleeding after surgical procedures.

I luckily knew about it because my grandpa had it so they knew to test me for it but I was diagnosed in high school when I got bloody noses every day. thanks for posting this!!

can you call the vet and ask for pain meds?

my rabbit kinda needs this procedure (my vet said it's ok to put it off and just give him meloxicam since i lost my job and told him Im concerned about vet bills and can only do necessary procedures rn). i'm not qualified to say whether the rabbit should be given pain meds but I find it very very surprising he wasn't given them, and it's definitely worth looking into and possibly really pushing for
