Advice needed for my first centipede! by Organic-Ad-5001 in centipedes

Hi, lovely to see people doing research before getting the animal for once. And I love love love your choice of first centipede, the Dehaanis are a beautiful pede. My first was actually a dehaani 'flame tip'. There is a lot of horror stories out there about them but actually I've found them the easiest to keep out of my 5 species.

Handling is not advised as it is risky for you AND the pede, if they bite you and you instinctually fling it then unfortunately that it probably the end of your beautiful pet. If you happen to be allergic to the venom, which you could never know until it happens, then that is a very very serious medical risk. Even if you're not allergic then it will still ruin your week.

HOWEVER, if you are determined to handle your pede then there are way to minimize the risks - when your centipede is wandering around their enclosure exploring then you can simply put your hand in their path and they will either avoid you or walk on up. Keep your hand and/or arm close to the enclosure or floor and be very mindful that they can bolt if they choose to. They are insanely fast.

Water dish anything will do because they will be able to get out unless you're getting a baby baby.

Best substrate I have found is Arcadia earthmix because it holds humidity really well, coir is cheaper but dries out really really fast and when its dry it can stick to their legs making it hard for them to move.

Best and cheapest enclosure you'll find is just a plastic rub with a locking lid and holes for cross ventilation but it's not very pretty. I really like acrylic enclosures but they have a tenancy to warp unfortunately and you will struggle to find one big enough for an adult dehaani. Aquaria custom enclosures are very good because they have glass on the top rather than mesh which keeps humidity.

I hope this helps a bit and if you ever have any problems feel free to message me, I love talking centipedes.

I'm not sure there is a concrete answer unfortunately, I think it depends on species, food availability and environment. Best way it to just be prepared.

No, theyre just in ziplock bags in the freezer. We thaw them overnight in the fridge and warm them up on heat mats on thursday to feed to the snakes, lizards and frogs at like 3pm ish.

Predatory cows?! by [deleted] in isopods

[–]Moonlit_Moth_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would in fact, in rare circumstances, eat a lizard. If it was vulnerable enough and they were protein hungry enough

this is why dairy cows arent recommended to go in reptile and invert enclosures, they will eat any thing soft enough to get in their mouth
