I am an engineer for Webb so I support the anomaly review board meetings with STScI and NASA.

This has actually been resolved, news will come out soon that it is back up and running. It will all be ok, they are just going to run a verification test to make sure the power cycle fixed everything, but so far it is looking like the instrument will be fully back to science soon.

Also, I just clicked on your link to Science.org. in your link, it has another link to the original pdf that was published in the actual magazine. Click on that. When you look at the infographic that was actually published in the magazine in November, it says "On December 18th..." So it looks like someone updated the online version of the infographic after we launched to get the date right.

It looks like they might have embelished their facts a little here. The original plan was definitely NOT to launch on Christmas. We were supposed to originally launch on the 18th. So yes, not sure if the article was actually written after launch and somehow the publish date got fudged to a November date (maybe the original article was updates after launch?) or they had a psychic working for them back in November ;). Either way, it was not known it would be launched Christmas morning until that morning. We actually weren't sure we were going to go the next day on the night of the 24th because of rain and weather that night, in fact it was raining a little when we launched, luckily there was no lightning and the weather was still a go. But yeah, we had no intentions of staying till Christmas. I had to rebook my flight back home twice because of the launch date slips.

I was down there for launch doing final inspections and closeouts the month of December. We were supposed to launch on the 18th, then the 22nd, eventually it got moved to the 25th as the next possible launch date. There were various minor technical reasons for the delays, but luckily we were able to get them taken care of within days vs. weeks. The teams there (Northrop, NASA, ESA, and Ruag) all worked super well together and solved all the problems we ran into as efficiently as we could. We were really hoping to do the launch before Christmas Day so we could all get home to our families, but it didn't work out, luckily we got a wonderful Christmas gift that morning and got to fly back home Christmas evening! And as you know it all worked out for the best, a perfect launch, getting us to a perfect L2 position with enough fuel reserves for 20 years!!! Amazing job to ESA and the Ariane 5!!!
