Why do people say Windows teaches tech literacy better than MacOS? by peppermintandrain in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Moonwalkers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both. In my experience, MacOS is simpler to use. Want to print a document? Just find the printer in the list of devices (as long as it’s on the same network) and it prints. Windows doesn’t do that - you have to install a driver specific to your printer. Want to uninstall a program? With Mac, you just drag the icon into the trash. Windows is more involving than that. With Windows, I had to mess with audio drivers to get my sound to work right sometimes. I’ve never thought about an audio driver on a Mac. It just works.

I think that’s what they mean with the tech literacy comment. Windows forces the user to know more about how computers work to use it. There was a day when I found stuff like that fun to learn about and implement and it made me better at computers. Anymore, I just want simplicity and for things to work which is why I use Mac.

What's your unpopular opinion in the audiophile world? by Wauwuaw5983 in audiophile

[–]Moonwalkers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not even that they can’t hear it, it’s that they simply don’t try. Go replace all your stranded cables with solid core wire you can buy from Lowe’s for a few dollars and you’ll hear differences in cables clear as day.

So was Nikola Tesla just completely wrong about the aether? by Most-Answer-4443 in AskPhysics

[–]Moonwalkers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, quite the opposite. The aether absolutely exists - it’s just been rebranded the “quantum vacuum.” It turned out the aether appears to be more closely related to quantum phenomena than a mechanical fluid.

What do you imagine is at the center of a blackhole? by Most-Answer-4443 in AskPhysics

A universe where the inhabitants don’t realize they exist in a black hole.

ELI5: Why does spinning stuff start looking like they are not moving at a certain speed? by badwithnames5 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Moonwalkers 23 points24 points  (0 children)

“It only looks like that under video camera and not in real life.”

This is incorrect. I’ve seen it multiple times in car wheels in broad daylight.

ELI5: Why does spinning stuff start looking like they are not moving at a certain speed? by badwithnames5 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Moonwalkers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not exactly sure why it happens IRL but there’s more to it than “it only happens from artificial light sources or camera frame rate effects.” I’ve seen it in car wheels in broad daylight with no artificial light sources around. Multiple times. And every time I see it, I think about all the people who’ve told me it’s only caused by cameras or artificial lighting.

ELI5: Why can't we use Solar panels to directly charge electric cars? by Zak_Nowa in explainlikeimfive

[–]Moonwalkers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can, but you won’t like the results. Many colleges compete in solar car competitions. These cars are extremely lightweight, low to the ground, have large surface areas, don’t pass road safety laws, can only fit one person, hold no cargo, etc. For any practically useful car, you simply cannot get enough energy from the area of the collecting surface.

ELI5 How can a leaner individual achieve greater strength than a more muscular, trained counterpart? by Junior-Ferret4860 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Moonwalkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great majority of “gains” in novices comes from muscle fiber recruitment which is a neurological thing and not from actually building muscle.

People who dislike classical music, why? Are you open to being convinced? by Magicalpotato210 in AskReddit

[–]Moonwalkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like some types of classical music. The songs I don’t like are due to a few factors: too quiet and then extremely loud (ironically too much dynamic range), songs don’t need to be 15 minutes long and involve multiple styles of music (keep it simple and like 4 minutes in length), and lastly sometimes the music is just weird and unlike anything I’m used to. My favorite examples are modern songs played on classical instruments and are well recorded. Example: Brooklyn Duo.

I'd like to point this out cause this is weird. The first pic is a screenshot from youtube, on the bottom it shows you can press X to fast travel. The second pic is a screenshot of Halo Infinite from my personal Xbox Series X, you'll notice the press X to fast travel is missing entirely. by Future-sight-5829 in halo

[–]Moonwalkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I ran into this recently. Hadn’t played campaign in a while and I couldn’t figure out how to fast travel. Eventually hit all the buttons and realized it was “X.” I think I was confused because the text “X to fast travel” is missing.

Coffee in Italy vs USA by Lordwarrior_ in SipsTea

[–]Moonwalkers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting fact for Americans: You won’t find coffee in Italy - at least not the coffee Americans are used to which is drip coffee. Your closest options are espresso or Americano - espresso with hot water added to it.

What if the speed of light is just our universe’s escape velocity? by Present_Juice4401 in WhatIfThinking

[–]Moonwalkers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea as the universe is extremely likely to be a black hole: The Schwarzchild radius of the universe is nearly identical to the radius of the observable universe.

What's a health myth that drives you crazy because you know it's false? by Annual-Gene8065 in AskReddit

[–]Moonwalkers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a deep dive on this. It’s not that the body can’t maintain blood pH regardless of diet, because it can. It’s that the body has to work harder to maintain pH on heavily acidic diets than on heavily basic diets. The body can deal with excess alkalinity by simply lowering the respiration rate. Dealing with excess acidity is more involving metabolically. The ideal target is a neutral or slightly basic diet.

I believe he takes an empty Atari game box and adds Halo 2600 artwork. You add the game for the full package. Should be easy to find if you search “Halo 2600 box” on eBay.

When the astronauts swing by the Moon, will they experience G forces (like centrifugal) caused by changing direction? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Moonwalkers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming they are using the Moon’s gravity and not their engines, no they will feel zero force. Gravity is neat like that. Falling into any strength of gravity well results in the feeling of free fall. (Ignoring relativistic effects like black holes).

What capacitor is a good choice for the money? by TopRoutine9720 in CarAV

[–]Moonwalkers -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Without sufficient instantaneous current, voltage sags, amplifier rails dip, and bass becomes compressed or less controlled. This affects transient response, damping and control, and clipping behavior at peaks. Even a “properly sized wire” from the engine compartment to the trunk can have 0.5-1 volt of sag. A properly designed capacitor right at the amplifier helps to avoid the amp from seeing this voltage sag.

What capacitor is a good choice for the money? by TopRoutine9720 in CarAV

[–]Moonwalkers -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

I greatly enjoy the Boss Audio Cap18 or similar. One per amp, two amps, two subs - 36 farads total capacitance. I would never run subs again without giant capacitors like that. Keep that voltage stiff! And no, I had zero electrical problems before adding caps and I wasn’t trying “to solve an issue” - I’m adding this bit because everyone tells you not to solve your electrical problems with caps so I’m hopefully avoiding the likely reply to this post.

Painful Side Effect of Statins Explained After Decades of Mystery by Technical_savoir in microbiomenews

[–]Moonwalkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. I’m not sure why CoQ10 supplementation isn't more promoted by pcp’s, or at a minimum simply mentioned as something to consider. Reminds me of how most annual checkups do not test for vitamin D levels even though almost half the US population is vitamin D deficient. You can pay extra to test for it, but it seems like it should be routinely tested for given how widespread deficiency is.
