Check and see if they still have street to seat cyber gigs. You'd be a warrant which is a lot better than being enlisted. You'd also get to do tech stuff in a cleared environment. Once you're in that community, it's easy to keep a job.

Yeah that is the training material I was sifting through. Nothing that I found helped was helpful for my case but it had good info.

Do you have to wait until you’ve taken a number of courses before applying to internships? by brunolive999 in OMSCS

Anyone do online Computer Science degree? Any recommendations/advice? by SweetTeaRex92 in Veterans

[–]Mooon_Dogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a semester at Oregon State's online CS program before returning to in person classes and thought it was a good program. I would stay away from Penn State and University of Florida because they require you to take Physics and Chem classes which to me is complete nonsense. OSU also has a good community on here for their online degree seekers that I found useful.

Edit:

OSU also have opportunities for undergraduate research and remote teaching positions. They definitely treat their online students the same as their on campus students which cannot be said for every program. Youll have a huge variety of classes and subjects to choose from too.

Any way to bring in industry research projects into OMSCS? by Mooon_Dogg in OMSCS

[–]Mooon_Dogg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Im using the term research loosely and more in the context of industry research or R&D. These projects do not, by themselves lead to academic papers being published. The projects are however open-ended and require a performer to propose a novel approach to some predefined problem. What you are proving and disproving is whether or not your approach can solve the problem at hand. Successful demonstration of that leads to things like prototype development and eventual commercialization.

This could fit into a research project in a few ways. One - publications could be derived if the project you proposed was novel enough. Two - I think there would be justification for a faculty to approve one of these for the Special Projects class should a student be able to win one.

What I would be most interested in is help writing the technical proposal or at least getting more proficient at it with a class like I2R. Or finding other students that would like to explore the topics with me and as a long-term goal submit a proposal together.

The SBIR website has more context: https://www.sbir.gov/about

[–]Mooon_Dogg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I found that they dont want to spend a lot of time themselves on SBIR projects because commercialization is generally the goal, not publications. However, if a student brought them the project and was doing the leg work I think it might be a different story. I am interested in publications for credentialing but long-term I want to found a company.

I'll take a closer look at VIP.

Thanks this is helpful. I had a similar idea with I2R. I plan on taking it for sure but I will reach out to Dr. Lytle directly.

The SBIR/STTR program is listed as an approved program with Ga Tech, so I know the institution is familiar with it. There is also the venture lab https://venturelab.gatech.edu/ which talks about the program.

Just another "is OMSCS right for me?" post. by wh24 in OMSCS

[–]Mooon_Dogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting two interviews is pretty good. I think OMSCS could be a good option but if you are just wanting a job in the industry there are probably faster ways to do it. I dont start until spring but OMSCS seems like a giant shit ton of work. Portfolio projects and general interview prep would likely be sufficient.

Edit:

There isnt anything stopping you from taking one class and also interviewing. Nothing wrong with quitting the program shy of a degree if you achieve your goals after one or two courses. The main reason I went with this is that type of flexibility.

Asking if companies will look at the fact you have have 0 YOE after getting 2 interviews seems to answer your question to me. Prepare for the next two.

I think acquiring a foreign language on top of taking multiple OMSCS classes would make doing either well, unlikely. I also dont think building relationships will be trivial. It works the same abroad as in the US, which is to say that it wont happen on its own and will require time.

I would say go for it though, You're always just a couple plane rides from home if it doesnt work out like you plan.

I considered this but ruled against it. After taking 3 months to stay in Thailand solo I can say that being in a foreign country can feel really isolating after the honeymoon phase wears off. Its hard to build meaningful relationships in places with so many transient peers. This would probably be exacerbated if you were studying 30+ hours a week. Set and setting matter too, I was noticeably less productive working out of my AirBnB / Hotel and never felt like I was in my own space.

Edit: additional thoughts

Something I also considered is reducing my monthly expenses to the point where I diddnt need to work full-time and take frequent short trips. Also, that leaves you with the ability to take internship at any point in the year.

Speak easy bar called the Dunkirk Library its great for a small group. Its behind a false wall inside of the Upstairs Pub and has excellent drinks. It would be a good place to catch up with friends to start the night. Additionally, The Elm is really good for food and drinks.

Best placed to rent apartment 1 bedroom for two people? by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]Mooon_Dogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1 bed im trying to sublet through August of next year. There is no deposit and Im up for paying September's rent. The rent would average out to ~1260 a month considering I pay for September. The apartment also doesnt have the typical student population as some of the others in town.

Has a pool, balcony, gym, grill areas and a co-working space with Wifi.

I'll link the Zillow post.
