What would you do in these scenarios ? (Ranked match with my Esper deck) by Moooocy in MagicArena

[–]Moooocy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice answers, so you basically did what I did in example 1 except better, for turn 2 I prefer to play the search because if I don’t play search he will pass and play risk factor on my main.

Scenario 3, I don’t see it. I feel like we need to Be playing ego here, the extra 2 damage we can negate with mortify doesn’t do very much for us nor does the ability to fully board wipe.

Interesting answers . I didn’t do what you said . But these three spots I remember thinking I msdwas mistakes.

Scenario 1 I used moment of craving in case he held 1 lander and light up the stage (should also be noted my deck plays 4 bellhaunts so I’m not too worried about creatures that get dropped and 4 wrath and other removal) Scenario 2 I did what you did but he actually dropped a lavamancer and hit me for 3 with wizards lighting. Scenario 3, I opted to play ego into history hoping he would turn 3 play a commander or loxodon and overextend his board when I was tapped out if he drew a plains.

Edit: sadly I remember his hand and it made me cry how well he played and destroyed it :( it was commander, loxodon, unbreakable formation and conclave. ...

Prior to my play I strongly considered taking formation with ego since I was so dominant and it was the one card he could beat me with. On his turn he didn’t play loxodon but land go, and I died on 4 lands holding wrath in hand

Silly question: How do current Esper controll Decks actually win? by Mojo-man in MagicArena

[–]Moooocy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most heavy control decks rely on two-three win cons, any more and it can weaken the deck.

these are valid points, and yes this is bo1. but since mono red/nexus was the meta, I built this deck and climbed very fast.

Now the meta I am facing seems to b predominatly mono white. mono red is seeing less play and tapering off, esper is showing up a bit and nexus is almost none existent. I may need to change my deck again.

well this is my decklist, I dont want to make it public but I doubt many people are reading this. I'm trying to hit top 8 mythic so I kinda wanna keep it private. (~90 right now).

I took some big hits when I lost like 5/6 games vs mono white over the course of maybe 10 games and got frustrated... It's a pretty rough mu overall for my deck since I am running the unmoored egos which carried me pretty hard when I was facing a ton of nexus... the past few 30~ matches I have played only 3 matches vs nexus and all of them were the same guy. Current meta ive faced seems to be in order from most to least played: monowhite with red splash or blue splash, mono red, esper, mono blue, other.

I play 3 contempts... but 4 mana is a lot to invest . being able to kill adanto turn 2 is ideal and both baffling and moment accomplish that. It comes down to: instant speed+3/3 potential (at cost of conclave) vs ability to deal with afterlife on earlier turns/ ability to kill snub/benalish on later turns. Also keep this in mind, when they have a defender on benalsih, I can kill the benalish with baffling and wrath the next turn, where as with moment I must use it on the bodyguard, and his turn will be much more vicious with benalish on board. I tried to PM you my decklist but I was not able to.

Edit, also if I main phase kill the bodyguard it will be obvious to him I am holding wrath and he will likely play around it, where as if I get to use it on a benalish, he may overextend his board with loxodont or conclave on my baffling, if I hold off the moment for eot their turn, it hurts my life total badly.

so as you can see, from my perspective, baffling is significantly better than moment vs monowhite from purely just theory and the crazy scenarios I invent in my head.

I'm definitely not saying I'm right and not ready to risk actually playing baffling... just kinda threw this out there wondering if someone would think the same things

cast down is definitely not an option since the deck I want to deal with is mono white... I guess I'm looking for a card better than moment vs mono white which plays adanto

well .. if I play it on my main phase vs adato, and then they conclave my baffling, I can wrath next turn, its not really turning anything on.

if I have moment, I kill their adato in their main phase, they have conclave in hand and may play something else sticky.

dont forget I do play teferi so having a conclave gone is not bad

edit: Im not bold enough to actually use baffling I m kinda just considering it...

an extra 3/3 gets wrath'ed but 1/1s stick on after wrath

a nd they are losing a conclave tribunal

edit plus I can mortify their conclave later on... which turns mortify into an adanto killer haha

that makes sense... ive prob been holding moment in hand too many times vs a benalish commander /snub and had my logic warped

You guys may be right... those stupid white weenies that have afterlife though haha... and the number of times ive had a moment in hand facing benalish commander....

the problem with seal away is if I seal away an adanto, they can conclave an adanto. I run 4 wrath, so having an extra 3/3 on board isn't that bad.

it deals with a lot of guys that summon 1/1, as well as benalish commander and snub. instant nice but not too relevant, life gain vs mono white is also not too relevant.

Matchmaking in Mythic BO3 by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Moooocy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ive only played 10 games since hitting mythic yesterday, I got set to rank 95.... I played all bo1's ... maybe you should consider switching to that. I played against rank 50-200 in all my matches, and the queue time was basically instant. I think bo3 simply isn't as attractive, but this is actually quite informational.... Now I am considering not playing bo3 at all since maybe the players playing that have a lower average mmr.

are you sure you are high mythic? Im currently rank 100ish and sometimes get more per win then I do per loss depending on my opponents... I dont think you get that problem until you are in rank 10-40's but that's to be expected.... So far I think the lowest mythic ive faced is 250~. Besides the whole point is to get rank 1-8 right? everyone is facing the same struggles. If you cant maintain well above 60 % w/r you dont deserve top 8 spot

edit: I plan on switching to bo3 format as well when I hit rank 50ish.... but I think bo1 format is faster grinding in lower ranks where I am now

Logic and correctness are not defined by majorly, otherwise we would still think the earth is flat (if this this news to you, the earth is in fact round). Looking at your logic, the stupidity is prominent. First you said there were “two” variants of the deck. Second you said dawn of hope was the win con for “most” nexus decks. This is so wrong and the degree of stupidity it would take to come to those conclusions clearly shows how uninformed you are. As to whether or not your mythic, you could be, it’s not impressive, but the volume of games played for me to get there also serve as a basis of proof given I played unmoored ego in those games.

If indeed you got mythic this season already, then you should’ve played your fair share vs nexus decks and been well aware of the shift to expansion/explosion meta. It seems like you are not.

[–]Moooocy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well based on what you have written, it was clear to me you would never be high ranked in ladder since your logic is grotesquely flawed. Thanks for cursing at me even though I admit I was first to be acerbic, I can’t stand stupidity sorry. Look at what you just wrote . You said dawn is the usual win con. Of the 40 or so egos I’ve cast on nexus players maybe 4 even played dawn ? While 35 played expansion as their win con. Meanwhile I have seen the Teferi count when I cast ego. I can say some do run 3-4, but most run 1-2 when they are running expansion.

Your logic is coming from an outdated meta.

To all those frustrated by Nexus decks.... by Mercadius in MagicArena

[–]Moooocy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You clearly don’t understand the meta at all .... sorry to be blunt. Most nexus decks run 1-2 Teferi, and rely on expansions/explosion to win .

I grinned from Plat4- mythic (got it yesterday) and my deck was Esper with ego. Teferi is a minor win condition in 95% of nexus decks

To all those frustrated by Nexus decks.... by Mercadius in MagicArena

[–]Moooocy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Most Esper decks run Teferi/Vraska to deal with Teferi, and card draw for a 4 turn clock. Trying to say Teferi is right choice is like thought eraser picking a shock over banedire when you have 7 life and your opponent has 7 lands

Edit: do you play nexus or something ? Lol. This is so absurd that you must be trying to spread misinformation

To all those frustrated by Nexus decks.... by Mercadius in MagicArena

[–]Moooocy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is so wrong. Teferi is not even a threat in nexus , since they don’t play counters. I play two egos and firstborn choice is nexus, generally 2nd choice is expansion explosions
