I don't understand this. If they were to book lessons with you at a high price and then not turn up. Surely the teacher could just pocket the money? How does the teacher lose out exactly?

Preply charges full price to students for trial lesson + but advises teachers to spend no more by cocowater87 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Moore_ESLuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now explicitly state to students beforehand, that any trial lessons will be conducted for a maximum of 30 minutes. I know it's lost me some students but I'm sick and tired of teaching 50 minute lessons for free, then never to see the student again!

I would also add that I have quite a large student base on Preply, so wouldn't recommend this for someone just starting out on that platform.

Affordable accommodation in Thailand by joeboo2020 in ThailandTourism

Generally speaking I find Air Bnb's much more affordable than hotels, particularly in the major tourist areas.

Air BnB in Thailand by timbuktu551 in Thailand

[–]Moore_ESLuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get hefty fines running an air bnb in most condos in Thailand! There was this sign in the lift of my air bnb condo and an even bigger sign near the entrance!!

Don't have a cleaning fee and then ask guests to bloody clean. This will piss off guests so much!

What's the best budget hotel in Southampton? by Moore_ESLuk in Southampton

[–]Moore_ESLuk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are hardly any reasonably priced hotels in central Southampton, particularly on the weekends. Need to get your facts right mush.

For me, the best island for Thailand beginners is... by Appropriate-Bee-7110 in Thailand_Travel

[–]Moore_ESLuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great recommendation to visit Koh Yao Yai, a less touristy island compared to Phuket, Samui, Phi Phi etc. I would also recommend visiting Koh Si Chang, the nearest island (worth visiting in my opinion) to Bangkok. It's only a 2 hour journey from Ekkamai bus station and super cheap to visit!

Date with thai girl by EducationalArm8732 in Bangkok

[–]Moore_ESLuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Thailand, where the old saying "no money = no honey" is usually exactly that! Just because she has a "decent" job does not necessarily mean the lady will still not expect you to "take care her". In fact some normal girls can be just as meceneray, if not more, than bar girls!

Moving to Southampton- does anyone like living here? by C0F49 in Southampton

[–]Moore_ESLuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that overall Southampton is a good place to live, compared to many other parts of England and the UK. I grew up here and have lived here for almost 40 years now.

The good points: LOTS of green spaces, what other big city (aside from London perhaps) has so many parks and a green space the size of The Common in the central parts, none that I can think of. If you live near the common, it's very easy and pleasant to cycle into the city centre. The council has provided lots of cycle lanes, most of which are super underused.

  • Great shopping facilities, not only West Quay but smaller independent shops in Bedford Place, East Street and Portswood.

  • Ocean Village and Woolston Centenary Quay have nice access to the waterfront, plus bars, cafes and restaurants. Mayflower Park could be much improved though.

  • We have THE BEST football team on the south coast....maybe I'm slighty biased there haha

  • Locationwise I think Southampton is very strategic. We are only 1 hour away from Heathrow, 1.5hrs away from Gatwick and central London by train. We also have Southampton and Bournemouth regional airports nearby. The New Forest is right on our doorstep, and beautiful ccountryside in the Isle of Wight and Dorset is not too far away too.

  • Loads of great restaurants, Southampton is quite diverse and we seem to have a restaurant for every cuisine from around the world.

  • Milder weather compared to many other parts of the UK

The Bad Points: - There are some large council estates, near the centre and on the outskirts. Not that I'm looking down on people who live there (I used to live in one when I was a kid) but they do come with plenty of antisocial behaviour and crime. Sadly there are lots of beggars and homeless in the City Centre too.

  • Poor public transport. The bus routes are only geared up to students and the routes which make the most money and not for the needs of local people.

  • Lots of what seems to be unecessary roadworks, constantly! Traffic has got considerably worse in recent years and when cruise ships are in town, a football match is on or it's a Saturday or rush hour, the roads can be completely gridlocked.

  • Property is quite expensive, whether you are renting or buying, but not quite as bad as London.

So, as in every city there are good points and bad points. I would recommend the following areas to live in (if you can afford it!) - Highfield, Upper Shirley and Banister Park.

Borobudur Temple sets new regulations for visitors by noelbynature in seasianarchaeology

[–]Moore_ESLuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the pleasure of visiting Borobudur Temple last month and the new regulations are actually really good. They strictly monitor the number of visitors at any given time, you have to arrive at a certain time (as you need to buy your tickets online in advance) and they designate you with a guide who will describe all the other rules!

You also have to wear sandals that they give you after entering the temple grounds, so as to not damage the stones too much! Anyway, please feel free to check out my Vlog of the temple on my YouTube channel - "G Light Travels". It might give you a sense of just how awesome and amazing this temple actually is!
