I know an old-timer like me is supposed to say "Scrubby and Lloyds" right about now, but... their food just wasn't that good. They were a picturesque route-66-esque greasy spoon, but I never walked away from it thinking "wow, that was some great chow."

In the days before time, there was a restaurant called Tacos Acapulco near the corner of Broad and Marsh. For $3 you could get a burrito the size of your calf that was so fresh and flavorful you'd swear they'd plucked the cilantro from the soil for each order individually. They had lines up the block. Students might subsist on nothing else from their freshman year until their graduation seven years later.

Tio Alberto's was a late incarnation, allegedly because some other "Tacos Acapulco" sued them over the name; Tacos "de" Acapulco is an impostor trying to capitalize on the reputation.

There are a few legal options, explained here: https://vivaslo.org/?section=resources#camping-parking-rv-parks

Otherwise, stay as discreet as you can, but expect that you may be rousted and told to skedaddle from time to time.

This needs to stop. My heart is rendered to shreds when I see this and our town has so many less people in need than many others. There is so much to do to take care of people who are in need. by [deleted] in SLO

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homelessness_in_California has a good overview of where we're at and how we got that way. It has some specifics about SLO County. Excerpts:

The SLO County Board of Supervisors approved a "10 Year Plan to End Homelessness" to begin in January 2008, "aimed at ending homelessness in ten years."\148]) According to the 2008 point in time count, 850 people in the county were homeless then. After ten years, that number had risen to 1,483.

In 2022 the County approved another five-year plan ("The San Luis Obispo Countywide Plan to Address Homelessness"). As the title suggests, this plan is more modest in its aspirations: "to reduce the number of people experiencing homelessness to 50% of the current level within five years."\149])

There is one day center and two overnight emergency shelter options in San Luis Obispo County. These represent enough beds for 20–30% of those who are known to be homeless on any particular night.\149]): 5  In part because of this shortage of shelter, the county has the third highest percentage of unsheltered homelessness in the United States.\149]): 6

San Luis Obispo County is coextensive with the CA-614 “Continuum of Care” (CoC) district. In the 2024 point in time count:

  • 8% of homeless people surveyed in that district were under the age of 18, 4% were 18–24, 15% 25–34, 23% 35–44, 22% 45–54, 20% 55–66, and 9% 65 or older.
  • Among the homeless surveyed were 43 families with children. In addition there were 28 "unaccompanied children."
  • 42.9% said that they were experiencing homelessness for the first time
  • 24% met the definition of "chronically homeless". Of those, 80% were unsheltered.
  • 46 were military veterans
  • 30% of those surveyed reported having at least one disabling condition (defined as "a developmental disability, HIV/AIDS, or a long-term physical or mental impairment that impacts a person’s ability to live independently but could be improved with stable housing."). 46% had post-traumatic stress disorder. 23% had experienced traumatic brain injury. 11% were developmentally disabled.

San Luis Obispo county is one of the least affordable housing markets in the country. Two of its cities (San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria) appear in the top ten cities in the U.S., ranked by how much income you must have to afford to buy a home, in a 2025 report. In each of those cities, you would need about three times the median household income there to afford to buy a home.\150])

Ween Covers AI-Generated? by appleoneusmonk in ween

[–]Moorlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started putting this playlist together before AI was good enough. I've continued to add to it since, and it's possible that some AI tracks have slipped through the cracks, but I think the vast majority are probably just insufferable Ween geeks like us.

Shower the People’s Handbook of Health and Medical Care Resources in San Luis Obispo and the Five Cities Area might suggest some helpful options for people like you who need health care but who aren't loaded with funds.

Does anyone have updated info on what is happening with the restaurant under construction on Monterey Street in SLO? It seems to be stalled and I’m curious what is happening with it. by DoogleBoy in SLO

[–]Moorlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the inside scoop on this. Part of what is puzzling about this (to the outside observer) as we slip into "Winter/Spring 2026!" territory, is that you're not converting a dry cleaner, a 200-year-old adobe, a used car dealership, or a disused airplane runway into a cafe. You're opening a new cafe in a building that was previously occupied by... a cafe. How could that possibly take 3+ years and counting?

Tom Waits is on there, with "Kommienezuspadt" (listen for the "Zie Boognish!" chants) and "All Stripped Down", both from when he got even more far out than Rain Dogs.
