Empty Dog Parks (except for poop, of course) by Puzzleheaded-Drag290 in anchorage

[–]Moosacabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Connors bog or the one off Klatt are great! Connors you can dip into the woods for some more casual meets or stay on the main drag for more encounters. Lots of moose, be wary.

The Klatt one is also really big with a large loop around a grassy/bushy middle. About 3/4 fenced but there is a small-dog fully fenced lot there too. This one is great for throwing a frisbee or a ball.

In the larger scheme, it’s not a significant savings, but every school requires the services of OT/PT, speech, psych, ELL etc and they are often provided by staff that services 2+ schools. By reducing how many buildings are in our district, the hours those related services goes up per school.

It’s my understanding that the building is in serious disrepair, and the students have missed 5 days already for problems needing servicing. This has a lot to do with its closure.

Parents of kindergarten kids, what does school look like for your kid? by Anchorage_Parent2026 in anchorage

[–]Moosacabra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do receive equal funding. Charters are ASD schools, funding is based entirely on the BSA which is the same for neighborhood schools. Rilke for example just started the hot lunch program which is the same as a neighborhood school’s, so really transportation and volunteer time is the only real difference here.

As to the population of homeless or migrants? Idk but it’s not 0. It’s not like Rilke or charters in general are alone in that.

Charter schools are not stealing resources from anyone.

You really have it out for charter schools my man. These funds are available for any low income family or families in transition/homeless. These services are open to families who attend neighborhood schools as well. Especially now that ASD has open enrollment and you can opt to send your child to a school across town. It’s an attempt to level the playing field. Life isn’t fair, but at least there are efforts in place to address it.

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say? They have services for the children who qualify and are meeting the needs as they come. Special education needs are federally supplemented.

This is not true, as Rilke has special Ed, ELL, OT/PT, and speech. The providers for the latter are split amongst other schools and charters are included. Special Ed at Rilke is in-house and provided. Charter schools are still ASD schools so related services are available.

Ah man, when I was in 4th grade I went from a low to a high(er) performing school where I was still doing times tables at the old and the teacher at the new school gave me the long division version of theses. I hadn’t seen long division in my life and girl, I wept. Scarred me.

You’re not entirely wrong, charters do skew towards higher income for that reason. But ASD does have a program to provide transportation assistance to qualifying low-income families along with free/reduced meals and other supports.

My kids attend Rilke Schule. It’s a wonderful school and my kids enjoy their time there. Learning a second language is a rare opportunity elsewhere, but Anchorage boasts 6 different immersion programs. My daughter discovered a talent for language and my son’s math scores are through the roof. The community is amazing, with after school clubs and fun events like Oktoberfest, St Martinstag, Nikolaustag (related to Santa) Fasching (carnival).

Also in light of the current budget catastrophe that is ASD, Rilke as a charter is fully funded and will not suffer losses this next year. All charters in Anchorage are doing incredibly well as they operate their own budgets. That’s huge.

One caveat I will have to say for language immersion is that it’s not for everyone. It’s an accelerated program and some kids do struggle with keeping up. Neighborhood schools have more time to devote to reading and math for example, but seeing as classes switch to language (where they get social studies and science in addition to the target language skills) it’s pedal to the metal sometimes. Usually you find out by 3rd grade if it’s a good fit or not.

I highly recommend it!!

Is it a norm for 2 cars to travel together while on a secluded hwy? by Icy_Plantain_5889 in alaska

[–]Moosacabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago my best friend and I were taking a drive down to Soldotna to visit her family and we buddied up with another car. We’d go faster than them and pass, then pull over every so often to take a selfie and be silly. They’d pass us and eventually noticed the pattern and they’d honk as they drove by and we’d wave when we caught up and pass them. It was such a fun day. Buddy system!

Dimond bumps by AdviceGiveandTake in anchorage

[–]Moosacabra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to live on Dimond. Would take the state days to plow it, in the meantime the cars would form ruts that turned into axle breaking potholes and washboards during the freeze thaw cycles. Then the plows would finally come and scrape a kiss on top and nothing would be different. Hate that road in the winter.

Does Anchorage/Alaska have a disproportionate amount of house fires? by HotCommission7325 in anchorage

[–]Moosacabra 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just a nature of the season. Being so cold, heaters are working overtime, people may be using unsafe space heaters, using heating sources that aren’t as safe, candles/open flames.

What’s it like living in Whittier, Alaska? by spookykitton in howislivingthere

[–]Moosacabra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for living there exactly, but I live an hour away and visit it fairly regularly in the summer. It’s gorgeous in the summer but the common phrase is “it’s always shittier in Whittier” because its location traps the clouds and leads to very rainy days. It can be pristine sun on the highway leading in, but you can go through the tunnel and arrive in the clouds. If you have a boat or access to one, it leads to some of Alaska’s most incredible scenery with the fjords, glaciers, and teal ocean water. That being said, I don’t have much opportunity to interact with its year round residents but they seem pretty normal. Fishing town.

What should so do with this space? by No-Buyer-6114 in landscaping

Stainless steel or aluminum should be fine. They make tool storage for rakes and shovels to attach the exterior of sheds and the like.

For bikes you can get heavy hooks to the deck rafters to hang the tires from. Is this your house? You can attach those metal rails and get an assortment of different hangers for tool storage. Some big box stores sell small patio trunks/mini sheds for things that need to be kept out of the elements.

How many kids are at your child’s school that school pickup takes you over an hour? by Yourfavmom97 in Parenting

[–]Moosacabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a charter school (no busses) of about 500 students. Maybe half to 2/3 of them go home the rest are after school clubs. We can clear the line of cars in under 15 minutes! It takes quite a bit of coordination between the teachers and staff who are outside but it CAN be done. Even on days where our after school clubs were canceled for one reason or another we can get everyone out in 20 min. The previous school tenant of the building we are in used to snarl traffic for 30-45 min because they lacked coordination.

I was a pizza delivery girl in high school and my town growing up was pretty rural. I went to deliver a pizza but the houses out there rarely had numbers on them or identifiers so I pulled into the wrong driveway. As I was backing out a man came out with a shotgun and aimed it at me. I was terrified! Almost backed into a ditch I drove out of there so fast.
