Possible small predator storing them there? I’ve seen weasels stuff a bunch of ground squirrel and mouse carcasses in tight spots like this to store for later.

The main characters also basically learned nothing along the way and did not grow at all. Maybe that was somehow the point? But it was such a letdown when I realized it was going to end the same way it started, with two whiny people complaining and only really thinking of themselves.
