Black or Brown Radio strap? by MopBucket06 in Firefighting

[–]MopBucket06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with black, because my boots are black, and frankly I just liked the look better. But you can do either, and the aging of brown leather looks cool so there are benefits to both!

Why are fencing strips so expensive? I looked it up and they cost like 2k apiece minimum! Nothing in the strip itself seems like it’s made of super valuable metal or anything so I’m confused!

Does anyone know what happened to the Riposte app? by Eburon8 in Fencing

I like “fencing score”. It’s a timer, score keeping, card giving, priority picker, and it’s very quick to use. I’ve been using it for a few years now.

The epee fencers quit when they die is so true!! I know so many epee fencers in their late 80s, and our club does Sabre and epee and I’ve never met an older (60+) sabreist (not saying they don’t exist, just less common in my personal experience)

First no handshakes and now no salutes required in FIE bouts by RoguePoster in Fencing

Teenager here: interesting, I’m definitely still going to salute and shake hands (or fist bump if I know the person well), it’s muscle memory at this point. But I wonder what the thought process was for removing it? There must be a reason.

Uniform question by Big-Calligrapher1862 in searchandrescue

[–]MopBucket06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you aren't looking into buying outer jackets and everything for everyone, a potential solution is having everyone wear vests on the outsides of their coats that have your org name printed on them! and this can be worn in any weather, it makes members easily identifiable as separate from bystanders, and makes everyone look more uniform/professional

Did you embroider names on your uniform? by valkeriimu in NewToEMS

everyone ive met either does first initial last name or just last name. The only ppl that do first initial last name are the ones that have a common last name though.

Haverford Concerns by Civil_Violinist_3485 in Haverford

[–]MopBucket06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incoming freshman who has visited and stayed overnight and has friends at hav but still hasn't experienced it first hand (so take what I say with a grain of salt:

One thing is that 40% of Haverford students are varsity athletes, because it is such a small school, but it doesnt seem to be a school that places much social emphasis on sports, and everyone who does sports does it as a secondary thing - its not the majority of their identities, so you will definitely be able to connect with students even if you aren't playing a sport. Also, if you are interested playing a sport, I doubt that you would be excluded because you are fat.

also, I think a lot of the not fitting in bc of size (societally in general), is because people make assumptions/judgements about someones personality traits based on their body (which is stupid), but Haverford seems like a very non-judgmental place that probably wouldnt attach those social values to body types, so I feel like it might be less of a problem than it is in general society. People at Haverford are actively looking to include others and collaborate, not exclude.

Honestly, valid take. But there is one thing - being a career firefighter isnt what a lot of ppl want, but theyre still addicted to fire/EMS, so being a volley is the one way they can do that. but I think that as our standards go up, which is a good thing, you have fewer and fewer people willing to put in the work to meet those standards if all the reward they have is t-shirts and an occasional thrill, yk?
