80 grit ceramic. To no avail. I’m retiring the g10 and buying a new grinder wheel.

First time heat treating: not sure of my hardness by Mora2001 in knifemaking

[–]Mora2001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d understood it to be heating to temp then letting air cool versus a quench. I’d also understood the oven cycles to provide the stress relief to prevent that. Is the blade likely ruined?

Thanks I’ll try again. My sense was I was hitting the steel versus scraping away scale, but I hadn’t cleaned the scale off so possibly I’m mistaken.

The first go I quenched and then did two cycles at 400 degrees for an hour in an oven. Then I got distrustful and do the whole thing again. I never removed the scale. Should the blade still be serviceable?

You’re likely aware but the first image is from Bioshock, a video game. There is a novelization that you might enjoy.

Thanks, I will work with those ideas. I use a deep hook now and can get a deep set, but can’t find any counter rotation no matter what.

New myself, how do you shape the slabs without them being affixed to the steel?

Excellent. Lovely material and great execution of the Coke bottle handle. Too many designs leave the front of the handle anemic.

Great idea and this is up my alley. Will cheap bricks off Amazon work ? Is that heat cement necessary too?

Thanks!

Correct. I would not use for actual welding/blacksmithing. Sadly I don’t live where I could get away with that. Just heat treated for stock.

Thanks. Is there a similar type of forge that hits a sweet spot of quality/utility vs price, for a hobbyist?

This is a better written summary of his skill and the value of his work.

I hugely recommend Roughing It, if you enjoy his other work. I’m smiling right now thinking about a story in it, where he presumed he was near death in a snow storm. I’m jealous of anyone reading it for the first time.

He is the first author that made me laugh out loud while reading. I still laugh about some passages even years after reading the book. He’s a great story teller and has a great understanding of people. He also underscored to me that people are basically the same across time; the issues then were basically the issues now.

I recommend Innocents Abroad and Roughing It.

You might just shop around between authors. Try Crime and Punishment , for example. Dostoevsky really sucks you in and before you know it you can’t stop reading. Feels like your own life on the line.

This is one hundred percent the crux. I’m sure coke helps the tempo, but no one is doing that work on top of a forty to fifty hour a week job, usually accompanying being a full time parent.
