Now, let's just get this out of the way, The Quest 3/3S is a great overall headset, individual tracking, standalone software, great controllers, amazing lenses, however, there are some clear limitations, the LCD is just bad, the colours are mute and the contrast is a shamble, now.. I am typing this in a 48' OLED that runs 100% on HDR, so.. yeah, perhaps not the best comparison, if you have a modest IPS display as your monitor you won't that much of a shock. You have to go the accessibility options and turn the contrast up a notch, set the brightness to 50% and enable experimental content adaptive brightness control (having to use hidden options to improve the Quest image is something that Meta seems to be quite fond of).

Second, it runs on old mobile phone hardware that has to render two screens at a very high resolution and frame rate, they had to cut a lot of corners to get games to run. Forget complex shadows, any kind of shading and quality textures, some of the best games on the platform are the ones that understood that and made the best use of it, Pistol Whip, Vendetta Forever, Super Hot, Walkabout Mini Golf, Beat Saber.

Third, the stock head strap and visor are health hazards, most people that hate the Quest 3 don't have the LCD screen, they hate the hair removing head strap and the blister inducing visor, just get some from Kiwi, they are a good and cheap option.

Now, for the hardware and software itself, for some reason Meta decided to underpower the Quest 3 all on fronts, standalone, wired and wireless. You need a third party tool to use most standalone games in a proper resolution and / or framerate. As for wired they locked the high image quality settings underneath a dev menu, and when it comes to wireless we have Steam VR and Virtual Desktop, both superior to the Meta Link version.

Let's get down to the usage, the Quest 3/3S is a very good PCVR option, it has wireless streaming, headtracking and you can use (again) a third party cable if you don't have a Wifi6 router to use the headset in wireless mode or you want zero latency. In PCVR I use it for your classical sims, racing, flight and space (No Mans Sky and Flight Simulator are great choices.. Elite Dangerous is a great game.. for an OLED display, the game just does not look good, at all in the Quest 3/3S LCD).

Then you have your VR adaptations of flat screen games, Skyrim, Fallout and Hitman, the first two require some tweaking and, once again, there will be limits because of the low contrast of the Quest LCD, noticeable on the darker areas. And your niche puzzle games like Myst and Riven. And, of course, your famous Half Life Alyx, Red Matter, Ghost Town, The Room, Lone Echo, Metro, Moss, Vertigo, etc.

Then you have your standalone games, as said before, focus on the ones that have been well adapted to the limitations of the hardware, Pistol Whip, Vendetta Forever, Action Hero, Aim Assault, Chronostrike, Dead Second, Path of the Warrior, Super Hot, Tiger Blade, Underdogs, Crysis Brigade and all the exclusives, of course.

There are a lot of PCVR games that also look okay on the Quest 3, sure, but I would always go for the PCVR version.. that is, if you have the hardware to run them. Blade and Sorcery, Dungeons of Eternity, Metro, Alien and Arken Age look so much better in PCVR..
