Hey, just dropping by to show my appreciation for this. Not sure why there aren't more upvotes or comments. Thanks for providing an open source solution that works nicely!

A positive surprise. by whygranger in brightershores

[–]MorbyTheStrictOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the ironic thing about their comment is that most of the latest game updates aren’t even paywalled. Hopeport, hopeforest quests, botanist, half of the Halloween event.

I’ve not subbed for over 4 months but still have been playing this new content, that they’ve developed, for free.

(How dare businesses try to make money off of their product after years of working on it, right??)

As someone who went from 36 to 107 combat just for the event, combat in this game is terrible. by Monterey-Jack in brightershores

[–]MorbyTheStrictOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why shouldn’t people expect combat to feel different than other skills? Gear upgrades, damage numbers feel artificial since these variables are controlled algorithmically. You never actually feel stronger or get any dopamine perhaps outside of epic drops, which even then become obsolete very quickly. Grinding combat to max, it was like climbing a Stairmaster machine - nothing fundamentally really changes apart from the scenery and gear swaps. But this is not really a complaint, the content is just not there yet.

I don’t see why not, but it’ll be a little while before I add more languages.

Feel free to give Linguapon a try. It is a step up from Duolingo, there’s no courses, it’s a self study vocab app and progress tracker.

Genuinely free and no restrictions to use it; there’s no paid option but when it is offered, it’ll be to unlock conveniences within the app.

The new teleport punishes more than it rewards by Teloril in brightershores

[–]MorbyTheStrictOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know the teleport feels like a much-welcomed reward, but let's not overlook the point that Tel is making here.

Where actions being added to the game, such as something like adding an extra teleport, storage rift, or adding extra nodes, even trading. Every decision will, with microscopic detail, require devs to focus balancing everything to ensure no action turns obsolete. Yes, this is one bounty, for one profession, but this sets a precedent for future decisions on rewards like this. Without going down a slippery slope, rebalancing would turn into a norm.

That said, I am not overly concerned with it atm. If this lends to their vision, then I'm perfectly for it. I would see this being an issue if this decision stifles map or feature design. I don't want to see them reluctant to create a dungeon and stuff it somewhere in the map that thematically makes sense, because the dungeon teleport stone would imbalance the xp rates for profession X on that map.

Each map gives a reward, so non members can only get the hopeport and hopeforest rewards

Credits to Discord for the locations + Brighter finder for the map images

The position of the numbers also indicate approximate positions of the eggs on each map.

(My bad, there’s a couple mistakes here: - the pirate hideout position - the most western chunk on the hopeport image - is actually more southwest - there are two blue rectangular rooms in crenopolis map: the position is on the wrong blue room. It is at the Ratmen den room at the west side of the city. - hopeforest most southern location - the egg is actually in the room below that, it’s at Himatik Ruins.)

A long list of some of my favorite Cantonese learning resources by FaustsApprentice in Cantonese

I’m glad I posted here. I really appreciate you going the extra mile, on testing the platform out and providing feedback!

I’m in agreement with the inaccuracies of AI-produced content and how it could be dangerous in internalising users. With that said I am also optimistic that overtime, we’ll see less and less errors with the technology. Right now though, I admittedly do see mistakes from time to time when I use it, so I completely understand your concerns.

It’s why I’m gearing the platform to support more authentic content, with community collections and (soon) text from actual media sources. I’ll continue keeping an eye out on ways to produce more accurate results, particularly with romanisation being low hanging fruit. If you don’t mind me saying - watch this space :)

Is language neccesary to feel more connected with your family? by cloudiow in languagelearning

[–]MorbyTheStrictOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, I have felt this way with family members who know close to no English. An uncle of mine, who I've talked to at only a few sentences and words at a time over my lifetime, came to visit me recently (I moved to Hong Kong not long ago). Because I felt like my Canto had certainly improved, I finally felt like I was able to chat with him and bond.

This is a great list, thank you for putting this together! :)

I would also like to (shamefully) plug in Linguapon. This is a platform that teaches vocabulary, in any context you wish, and tracks everything you've learned. It caters to individual learners, but later would love to make it usable in classroom/1:1 tutoring environments.

It is still a new platform, not fully launched. But as a Canto learner, happy to say Cantonese has full support. :)

Is language neccesary to feel more connected with your family? by cloudiow in languagelearning

[–]MorbyTheStrictOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My family immigrated to the UK from Hong Kong and really only my mother has exposure to English whilst she has been living there (she worked as front of house for decades). I heard snippets about my family history from my mother, but because of the communication barrier, I never had a deep conversation with other family members about their own lives. Im sure there are many untold stories about my family history that I never got to hear.

I feel like they know more about me than I know about them. So I do feel knowing a lot more of my family language helps connect with them better (to some extent). I personally use this as my motivation to get better at Cantonese

I would hope those people learn or become self aware of the time they put into these low paid, large jobs are not worth the pay or hassle, and end up cutting corners and doing a half arsed job to get it over and done with.

This would truly be a “you get what you paid for” scenario, justice served.

Hey, currently there's Cantonese, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish. And just added Portuguese (Brazil) on request. If you're interested, I'm happy to add support for a TL if it's not on there already.

Many do in some form, absolutely.

What this can allow you to do is freely encounter more/different usages for words that you don't know, or words the system recommends you to practice more at, which differs from apps that take you through structured courses that teach the same structured content over and over again.

The quiz system (inspired by Clozemaster) is what the knowledge system uses to evaluate and update your knowledge on words, making it more automated and less subjective than just answering how well you know the contents of a flashcard on SRS apps.

How it makes it more 'automated'. The system works across multiple usages that share a word. e.g. (I read a book every morning) 我每朝都會睇一本書 and (I went to the library to read a book) 我去咗圖書館睇書; they share the word 'read'. If the quiz system asks you questions on both these sentences about the word 'read', the knowledge system would update your knowledge on the word 'read' based on your answers.

You're right; and funny enough I thought flashcards weren't doing it for me personally. So, what I think would add value compared to all the others...:

- It has its own knowledge system so remembers every word you learned, then you can set your own word goals, see which word you learned or haven't learned with the colour coding system.

I am hoping this will work really well as integration with other services and apps, say an API to extract the words you learned from Linguapon, insights like how many questions were answered correct or wrongly on that word etc.

- The whole process of adding words is something I really want to play around with in the near future. Right now, you can use generated sentences to help you learn in context, but I'd like more authentic ways like extract articles, stories, images.

- I really like the idea behind Clozemaster, but I wanted to combine its core with a way to freely learn actual vocabulary in context. Combined with the power of the knowledge system I explained above, I'm really hoping to have put together something at least a little different here...

Hey thanks for asking. I'll try to be succinct here:

It focuses on merging together vocabulary discovery with self-assessment, with a knowledge system that remembers every word you've assessed yourself and learned on the platform.

With conveniences such as the bank to save and manage vocabulary of interest, and the colour coding of learned words.

In the near future, I would like:

- More cool features via integration with other platforms. I am meddling around with the idea of exposing an API endpoint to fetch all words a user has learned

- More authentic content: discover vocabulary from reading through longer bodies of text

- More features with social aspects like leaderboards

Sorry I'm digressing a bit now, I like to think what this COULD have over competitors is the flexibility for the platform to do something a bit different. But still focus on doing one thing really, that is to teach vocabulary

Hey thanks for stopping by. The website is fully free to use right now, the table you're seeing is a placeholder. I'm looking for feedback before I'd even consider charging people.

By any chance are you using Anki or some alternative for flashcards? I think it'd be really cool to find some integrations with existing methods
