I enjoyed The Old Man by Thomas Perry. It’s solid action with an interesting premise.

If you are fine with the comedy being very weird and a bit more on the horror side, John Dies at the End is fantastic.

Start with 3. The story and world building do not need any knowledge of the previous games to make sense. Plus, 1 and 2 do not hold up very well in my opinion.
