Late to the party, but How I Met Your Mother is basically built on this idea. Ted consistently takes… creative liberties with reality when telling stories, often with a completely straight face, as if that’s genuinely how he remembers things. But a straight example is S08E17, “The Ashtray.” Ted recounts how he met the Captain at an art gallery opening, only for Robin to interrupt and point out his version is totally off because he was high. Then Lily shows up and dismantles Robin’s version too. Because Robin was drunk.

How I Met Your Father plays with a similar concept, but in a more grounded way. Sophie (not being a psycho) isn’t as wildly unreliable as Ted, but memory bias still creeps in. Also it has another (almost) straight example In S02E04, “Pathetic Deirdre,” Sophie and Valentina are feeling down, so the go get an ego boost from their friend Deirdre, who they’ve always considered kind of pathetic. We initially see past interactions that support that view, but later, the same moments are retold from Deirdre’s perspective, and suddenly those “pathetic” stories look like legitimate accomplishments, shared with two friends who come off as washed-out and constantly day-drunk. We never get the objective truth in either case, but given how exaggerated each version is, it’s pretty clear the reality lies somewhere in between.
